Abstract
The invention relates to an internal combustion engine 1 and a method of supercharging an internal combustion engine 1 with a turbo unit 4 consisting of a turbocompressor 6 and an exhaust-gas turbine 5 where the turbine 5 is driven by a first 2 of two cylinder groups 2, 3 forming part of the engine 1 and the compressor supplies supercharged air to all the cylinders 25 in both the cylinder groups 2, 3. The invention makes it possible, in for example a V- engine, to use only one turbo unit 4 with a reduced exhaust pipe run in the engine space. In a preferred embodiment, regulation 13, 14, 30 of the intake air pressure is effected between the cylinder groups 2, 3 so that the cylinder group providing the exhaust gases which are driving the turbine 5 receives an intake air pressure higher than that for the cylinders 25 of which the exhaust gases are bypassed around the turbine 5 directly to any catalyst 27 and silencer arrangement 28. In this way, it is possible to achieve inter alia essentially the same degree of filling in both cylinder groups, which results in simpler fuel control to achieve the same additional torque on the crankshaft of the engine from both cylinder groups. <IMAGE>
