Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of accurately determining the position of an object using a bistatic or multistatic pulse echo system. The transmitter or transmitters transmit simultaneously or in rapid succession a number of transmitter lobes at different frequencies, which lobes overlap partly in bearing and/or in elevation, and the receiver or receivers receive signals from the different frequencies in a number of receiver lobes which overlap partly in bearing and/or elevation. The signal amplitude in the various receiver lobes is then measured for each frequency individually and the bearing from the receiver is determined by interpolation between signal amplitudes at the same frequency with knowledge of the shape of the receiver lobes. The signal amplitude at the various frequencies in one or more receiver lobes is then measured, individually, and the bearing from the transmitter is determined by interpolation between signal amplitudes of different frequency in the same receiver lobe with knowledge of the shape of the transmitted lobe. <IMAGE>
