Abstract

Method of coating a packing made of an elastomer, in particular a plate heat exchanger packing, with an outer protective layer made of a thermoplastic. The method is initiated by the elastomer packing being preheated to a temperature which exceeds the melting temperature of the thermoplastic chosen to be the protective layer. The packing is then dipped completely or partly in a powder bed consisting of the thermoplastic in powder form. The packing is thus coated with a sintered of powder which melts together to form a continuous layer. A packing for a plate heat exchanger made using this method has a core 14 made of an elastomer which is completely or in certain parts surrounded by an outer protective layer 15 made of the thermoplastic. This forms a dense continuous layer which essentially has no adhesion to the elastomer core 14. <IMAGE>
