Abstract

Combustion gases are purified or otherwise treated by passage along a flow path that is defined by one or more absorption chambers and that has varying cross-section and that follows a meander-like configuration and scrubbing the gas by spraying into the flow path a mist of an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide. The purifying apparatus comprises a housing (21) with an inlet (19) for the gases, an outlet (35) for the gases and a plurality of absorption chambers (31, 32, 33) interconnecting the inlet and the outlet, at least two of the absorption chambers being interconnected at their adjacent ends as a pair that define a substantially U-shaped flow path. The cross-section of one of the pair increases in the direction of flow and the cross-section of the other of the pair decreases in the direction of flow. Nozzles (40) are provided for spraying aqueous mist into at least one of the chambers. <IMAGE>
