Abstract

Apparatus for tightening a securing band around a package and for connecting the overlapping ends of the securing band 10 by a fastening and for severing the part of the securing band leading to the supply reel which is not required for the strapping which is being applied, wherein the cutting device comprises a notch cutter 28 actuatable with the upper punching tool 17 and a counterplate 29 and is arranged between the fastening device and the tightening device, wherein the counterplate of the cutting device serving as a support for the overlapping ends of the securing band and cooperating with the notch cutter in the direction of movement of the notch cutter includes a concave depression 31 as a free space running transversely of the securing band, in which the overlapping ends of the securing band, which are secured at one end by the fastening device and at the other end by the tightening device, are capable of curving downwardly by means of the notch cutter out of the plane of the band, in order to increase the tension prevailing in the upper end of the band and so as to achieve a separating tension necessary for severing the securing band at the notched position. <IMAGE>
