Abstract

A pinion shaft (11) is mounted for rotation in a gear box (10) by two axially spaced bearings (12, 13) and carries a pinion gear (14) at one end. The first bearing (12) is located adjacent to the pinion gear (14) and allows axial movement of the shaft (11) relative to the gear box (10). The second bearing (13) is fixed axially relative to the shaft (11) and is axially movable together with its seat relative to the gear box (10). Means comprising a screw threaded portion (23) actuated by formations (24) are provided accessible from outside of the gear box (10) by which the second bearing (13) and thus the shaft (11) can be axially moved and axially held in position so allowing the pinion gear (14) to be adjusted relative to a crown wheel (15). <IMAGE>
