Abstract
Respiration air for use (14) in the pressurised cabin of an aircraft is entirely produced by the removal of nitrogen from compressed air by means of reversible adsorbers (5) operated in a cycle comprising adsorption and reverse desorption phases, such that during each adsorption phase a continuously increasing proportion of nitrogen passes to the outlet end of the adsorber, and the oxygen concentration of the respiration air formed is adjusted in accordance with the cabin pressure within a permissible range by controlling the amount of gas flowing through the adsorbers, e.g. by a valved outlet (9) from a buffer tank (8) for the respiration air, and/or the ratio of adsorption to desorption pressure, e.g. by desorbing at the external pressure. An adsorber for use in the method has a casing containing an adsorptive filling and provided with spaced internal dividing plates having ports at opposite ends so as to form a zig-zag flow path for the air through the filling. <IMAGE>
