Abstract
1465153 Measuring the natural rate of densification BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 11 Feb 1974 [9 Nov 1973] 38253/76 Divided out of 1465152 Heading C1A A method of measuring the natural rate of densification of a sinterable material comprises a first stage of (A) applying a first pressure and a first heating rate to a first batch of a degassed sinterable material, to begin sintering of the batch, applying an increased second pressure and a second lower heating rate to the first batch to effect maximum densification, under the particular conditions of increased pressure and second lower heating rate applied, of the material, releasing the pressure and cooling the material prior to bloating and finally recording the density of the sintered first batch, a second stage of (B) applying the first physical pressure and the first heating rate to a second batch of the degassed sinterable material, applying an increased third pressure and a third lower heating rate to the batch to effect maximum densiflcation, under the particular conditions of increased pressure and the third lower heating rate applied, of the material, releasing the pressure and cooling the material prior to bloating and finally recording the density of the sintered second batch and in subsequent stages if necessary the same procedure is employed but the value of the increased physical pressure and of the lower heating rate in the second part of the procedure is altered, to identify which of the densities of the sintered batches is closest to the theoretical maximum density of the material, thereby to approximately identify the natural rate of densification of the material. The use of the method is described in connection with the production of alumina (see also Specification 1,430,144).
