Abstract

For sealing off a gap (12) between two components (10, 11), which move relative to one another and in a straight line, the sealing device has a magnetic fluid (18). Anchored in one component (11), e.g. a housing, is an annular permanent magnet (16) which, by means of a ferromagnetic ring (17) recessed into the other component (10), e.g. a rod, produces a magnetic field by means of which the magnetic fluid (18) is held in the gap (12). Such a seal, which is suitable for high sealing requirements and has a life which is independent of the frequency of motion can be used in conjunction with machine pistons and piston rods. <IMAGE>
