Abstract
1506170 Fluidized-bed reduction of iron ore STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AB 10 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 9919/75 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Pulverized iron oxide material, e.g. a concentrate, is mixed with solid (and optionally liquid) carbonaceous material and an 02-containing gas in a vertically elongated fluidized bed reactor wherein a mixture of gas and solid is removed from the reactor and separated, with the solids being returned to the reactor. Reactor 1 is charged with iron oxide material through conduit 6, carbonaceous material through inlet 7 and 02-containing gas, e.g. air, through nozzles 8. Iron oxide material is passed through inlet 20 to cyclone 19 where it is heated by off-gases from the reactor 1 and passes to conduit 6 after separation from the gases in cyclones 21, 22. Off-gases from the reactor have entrained dust separated out in cyclone 5 and returned to the reactor through conduit 6. The dust-free gas from cyclones 5, 19, 21, 22 passes to a heat exchanger 25, to scrubbers 27 where CO 2 and H 2 O are removed, and to compressor 29, the bulk of the gas then flowing to gas distributor 9 for fluidization and reduction purposes. The particles of reduced oxide, discharged at 10, are cooled to below the Curie temperature in cooler 11 and magnetically separated at 12 into an iron fraction 13 and a coke fraction 14. The O 2 -containing gas from 15 is pre-heated by passing it through the cooler 11. The cooler 11 and separator 12 operate on the fluidized bed principle using cleaned gas from compressor 29. Some of the coke fraction 14 may be recycled to inlet 20, and the remainder of fraction 14, together with some of the exhaust 34 from cyclone 5 may be used as a fuel in a power station. The solid carbonaceous material is preferably introduced with neutral and/or reducing gas Ie.g. part of the flow from compressor 29), or if of low volatile content, e.g. anthracite, with air Oil may also be introduced to the central part 3, e.g. by spraying.
