Description

PACKAGE AND BLANK Field of invention The invention relates to a package. The package is specifically designed to be provided with a moisture resistant inside. Such a packagemay e.g. be used to hold wet products, such as wet food products, such asmeat, vegetables or fish. The invention also relates to a blank for formingsuch a package.
Technical Background When designing a package for transport of products, it is desirous to take into account a number of different design criteria. The package shoulde.g. make efficient use of the material, be easy to transport to the point ofuse, be easy to prepare for use, and it should provide a strong package. ltshould be strong during handling and it should typically be capable of carryingother packages such that they may be stacked on top of each other. Whendesigning a package for transport of wet food products, such as meat, vegetables or fish, it is often a difficulty to make the package capable ofremaining mechanically stable over a sufficient time period. ln packagesformed of cardboard or paper based materials, the packages often lose theirmechanical stability due to moisture soaking into the material whereby thecardboard or paper based material becomes softer than they are in their drycondition. There exist numerous attempts to address the above design criteriain connection with transport of wet products.ln EP 2 125 538 B1, there is disclosed a fold flat carton precursor for a liquid tight carton comprises a floor, a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls with diagonal fold flaps at the corners. The diagonal fold flaps at thecorners are folded into the interior of the carton. The excess length of the endwalls is folded over the diagonal fold flaps into the interior of the containerwith the free end of the end walls abutting the floor of the carton. The differentflaps are disclosed to be held in place by application of adhesive.
EP 2 275 352 B1 discloses a packing for fresh fish and similarproducts. lt is said to maintain mechanical integrity in cold and humidconditions. The side walls are connected via attachment flaps abutting theinside of the end walls and excessive length of the end walls is folded into theinterior of the package. lt is also disc|osed that the material includes afibreglass mesh.
EP 3 115 310 B1 discloses a leak tight tray for transporting wetproducts, such as fresh fish. lt is disc|osed that the end panels compriseprolongations which are folded into the interior of the package such that theprolongations form triangular corner posts.
US 2,495,807 discloses a double walled box or carton for foodproducts. The carton is said to be liquid tight and well adapted for productssuch as sliced meat and the like. lt is disc|osed that the box has an innerbottom panel and an outer bottom panel hingedly connected at one side edgeto the bottom edge of one of the outer side walls and having a sealing flaphingedly connected to its other side edge and lapped upon and adhesivelysecured to the inner side of the other outer side wall. The end panels havetucking flaps which are inserted between the inner and outer bottom wallpanels. The tucking flaps are hingedly connected to the lower edges of theouter end walls by hinge scores. Slits are provided at the ends of the hingescores forming locking tabs on the ends of the tucking flaps. lt may be noted that none of the prior art documents discloses apackage which adequately addresses the set of design criteria that thepackage should be efficient when it comes to material consumption, it shouldbe easy to erect (preferably without the use of any adhesive), it should becapable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flapand it should be capable of maintaining mechanical integrity even though wetproducts are stored in the package.
Summary of invention lt is an object of the invention to provide a package which addresses the set of design criteria that the package should be efficient when it comes tomaterial consumption, it should be easy to erect (preferably without the use of any adhesive), it should be capable of being handled without riskingunintentional withdrawal of any flap and it should be capable of maintainingmechanical integrity even though wet products are stored in the package. This object has been achieved by a package according to claim 1.With such a design it is possible to provide a package having no cut edges in the interior of the package, whereby it is possible to provide amoisture resistant interior e.g. be simply coating one of the major surfaces ofthe blank. By providing the locking panels on the outer side wall panels andby providing them with their respective gap portion and locking portion incombination with the provision and position of the locking tongue, it ispossible to lock the package in an erected state without using any adhesive. The provision of the gap portions and locking portions and the fact that thelocking tongue is tucked in between the locking portions and the outside ofthe end wall prevents the locking tongues from simply being pulled outwardlyalong the longitudinal direction (which would be possible in the prior artdesigns). Such unintentional withdrawal otherwise typically arises when thestoremen puts the package in a stack and withdraws his hands. ln theinventive design any lifting of the package in the handles naturally formed bythe locking tongues will actually force the locking tongues towards the lockedposition and since the locking tongues are folded such that they basicallyform a folded handle, there will be no cut edge which otherwise would have atendency to get caught in the storemen's gloves when the storemen puts thepackage in a stack and withdraws his hands. Moreover, in the inventivedesign there is an efficient use of material since there is no need for any outerbottom panel and since any double material thickness is provided in the sideand end walls being designed to be able to carry other packages whenseveral packages are stacked on top of each other. lt may be noted that it ispossible to choose the extension of the first gap and the width of the insertionportion such that the folded locking tongue forms a useful handle on each endof the package. lt may be noted that the height position of the handle on theend wall may be chosen differently by changing the, as seen in the flat-laidstate, transversal extension of the gap portion. A comparably longertransversal extension of the gap portion will result in a higher height position of the handle. lt is preferred that the respective gap portion has a transversalextension being such that a transition edge between the respective gapportion and locking portion is positioned at a height position on the end wallbetween 25% and 75% of the height of the end wall as measured from theinside of the bottom panel. However, it may be noted that it is alsoconceivable that the gap portion may be completely virtual and not beingformed of a physical panel portion. ln such a design, the locking panel mayphysically be formed of a locking portion and all material in the gap portionmay be removed e.g. all the way back, as seen in the longitudinal direction ina flat-laid state, to the respective end of the outer side wall panel.Alternatively, the locking panel may physically be formed of a locking portionintended to extend along the complete height of the end wall such that thelocking tongue is folded around the lower edges of the locking portions at thebottom of the package. This latter may be useful if it is desirous to provide apackage having a smooth underside along the end walls.
The respective locking portion of the respective locking panel mayhave, as seen along the longitudinal direction and in a flat-laid state of thepackage, an extension from the respective outer side wall panel being greaterthan an extension of the respective gap portion of the respective lockingpaneL The respective locking portion of the respective locking panel may, asseen along the transversal direction and in a flat-laid state of the package, bepositioned closer to the bottom panel than the respective gap portion of therespective locking panel. Thereby will the gap portion be positioned closer tothe bottom when the inner and outer side wall panels are folded relative toeach other and form the respective side wall.
A transition edge between the respective locking portion and therespective gap portion extends in the longitudinal direction as seen in a flat-laid state of the package. This transition edge will thereby extend horizontallyon the outside of the end wall.
At each corner ofthe bottom panel, the end wall panels and the innerside wall panels are interconnected by a corner panel being foldable asoverlapping triangular flaps towards an outside of the end wall panels. This is a convenient way of providing a package without any cut edges in the interiorat the corners.
The respective locking panel extends longitudinally at least partlyalongside the respective corner panel and may as seen along the transversedirection be positioned outside the respective corner panel. Thereby will thelocking panels become positioned outside the corner panels as the packageis erected.
The respective locking panel is separated from the respective cornerpanel by a longitudinally extending cut line as seen in a flat-laid state of thepackage. This allows for the corner panels to be folded independently of thelocking panels.
The respective corner panel may be provided with a fold line extendingfrom the respective corner outwardly, as seen in a flat-laid state of thepackage, in both the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction. Thisfacilitates folding of the corner panels. ln an erected state of the package, the corner panels are folded asoverlapping triangular flaps towards the outside of the end wall panels.Thereby will the locking panels keep the triangular flaps in place and the outerand inner side wall panels may abut each other directly along the completelongitudinal length of the side wall.
The respective transition edge between the respective locking portionand the respective gap portion is, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, positioned at a transversal distance and the longitudinal extension ofrespective gap portion is such that any corner panels being folded asoverlapping triangular flaps towards the outside of the end wall panels arehidden between the outside of the end wall panels and the respective lockingpaneL The locking portions form a second gap having a second transverseextension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap. Byhaving a small gap between the locking portions there is with a certaintyprovided a minimum of materials overlapping each other.
The respective locking tongue may further comprise a base portionhaving a transversal extension being greater than the respective transversal extension of the insertion portion, the transversal extension of the respectivebase portion preferably being equal to a transversal width of the bottompanel. Such a base portion will form a cover over the otherwise exposedportions of the locking portions which reduces the risk of anything gettingcaught by any exposed cut edges of the package as it is handled.
The package is preferably formed of a blank formed of a card board orpaper based material.
At least a major surface of the blank being intended to form an insideof the package is preferably provided with a water resistance improvingpolymer based coating.
The above mentioned object has also been accomplished by theprovision of a blank according to claim 8.
Advantages associated with the different features and preferredembodiments have been discussed in detail in the above in relation to thepackage. That discussion is equally valid in relation to the blank andreference is therefor made to the above discussion. lt may be noted that thevarious preferred embodiments or optional features are equally applicable tothe blank.
The invention may also in short be said to relate to a package having abottom, a first and a second end wall, a first and a second side wall eachcomprising an inner side wall panel and an outer side wall panel, wherein theouter side wall panels are each, at each longitudinal end thereof, providedwith a longitudinally extending locking panel, each comprising a gap portionand a locking portion, wherein each end wall further comprises a lockingtongue configured to be folded downwards from an upper side of respectiveside wall panel downwardly outside the locking portions, to be insertedbetween the gap portions and to be further folded between the lockingportions and the outside of the respective end wall panel. Advantagesassociated with the different features and preferred embodiments have beendiscussed in detail in the above in relation to more extensive disclosure of apackage. That discussion is equally valid in relation to the package disclosedin this paragraph and reference is therefor made to the above discussion. lt may be noted that the various preferred embodiments or optional features areequally applicable to the package disclosed in this paragraph.

Detailed description of preferred embodimentsWith reference to the figures, and especially figure 6 and figure 1a, there is disclosed a package 1. The package is preferably formed of a blank being erected into said package 1. The package 1 has a bottom 2.The bottom 2 is formed of a bottom panel A2. The package 1 further has afirst end wall E1 a second end wall E2. The end walls E1, E2 are arranged attwo opposing ends e1, e2 of the package 1 as seen along a longitudinaldirection L. The package 1 further has a first side wall S1 and a second sidewall S2. The side walls S1, S2 are arranged at two opposing sides s1, s2 ofthe package 1 as seen along a transverse direction T. The transversedirection is orthogonal to the longitudinal direction L. The longitudinal direction and the transverse direction are preferably oriented such that the define aplane being parallel to a major surface of the bottom panel A2.
The first end wall E1 comprises an end wall panel AE1 being foldablyconnected to the bottom panel A2. The second end wall E2 comprises an endwall panel AE2 being foldably connected to the bottom panel A2.
The first side wall S1 comprises an inner side wall panel AlS1 formingan inside S1' of the first side wall S1 and an outer side wall panel AOS1forming an outside S1 " of the first respective side wall S1.
The second side wall S2 comprises an inner side wall panel AlS2forming an inside S2' of the second side wall S2 and an outer side wall panelAOS2 forming an outside S2" of the second side wall S2.
The inner side wall panel AlS1 of the first side wall S1 is locatedbetween the outer side wall panel AOS1 and the bottom panel A2 as seenalong the transverse direction T.
The inner side wall panel AlS1 of the first side wall S1 is foldablyconnected to the first side s1 of the bottom panel A2 along a longitudinallyextending inner side fold line FLS1.
The inner side wall panel AlS1 of the first side wall S1 is foldablyconnected to the outer side wall panel AOS1 along a longitudinally extendingouter side fold line FLOS1.
The inner side wall panel AlS2 of the second side wall S2 is locatedbetween the outer side wall panel AOS2 and the bottom panel A2 as seenalong the transverse direction T.
The inner side wall panel AlS2 of the second side wall S2 is foldablyconnected to the second side s2 of the bottom panel A2 along a longitudinallyextending inner side fold line FLS2.
The inner side wall panel AlS2 of the second side wall S2 is foldablyconnected to the outer side wall panel AOS2 along a longitudinally extendingouter side fold line FLOS2.
The outer side wall panel AOS1 is at a first longitudinal end thereofprovided with a longitudinally extending locking panel L1. The locking panelL1 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS1 along a transversely(as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1) extending fold line FLL1. The outer side wall panel AOS1 is at a second Iongitudinal end (opposite the firstIongitudinal end) thereof provided with a Iongitudinally extending lockingpanel L3. The locking panel L3 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panelAOS1 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1)extending fold line FLL3.
The outer side wall panel AOS2 is at a first longitudinal end thereofprovided with a Iongitudinally extending locking panel L2. The locking panelL2 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS2 along a transversely(as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1) extending fold line FLL2. Theouter side wall panel AOS2 is at a second Iongitudinal end (opposite the firstIongitudinal end) thereof provided with a Iongitudinally extending lockingpanel L4. The locking panel L4 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panelAOS2 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1)extending fold line FLL4.
As shown in figure 1a, each locking panel L1, L2, L3, L4 comprises agap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a and a locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b.
As shown in figure 4, as the locking panels L1 and L2 are foldedtowards the outside E1” of the end wall panel AE1, a first gap G1 having atransverse extension GT1 is formed between the gap portions L1a, L2a facingeach other. As also shown in figure 4, as the locking panels L1 and L2 arefolded towards the outside E1 " of the end wall panel AE1, a second gap G2having a second transverse extension GT2 is formed between the lockingportions L1 b, L2b facing each other. The transverse extension GT2 of thesecond gap G2 is smaller than the transverse extension GT1 of the first gapG1.
As is evident from the symmetry of the blank as the locking panelsL3 and L4 are folded towards the outside E2" of the end wall panel AE2, afirst gap having a transverse extension is formed between the gap portionsL3a, L4a facing each other. Moreover, as the locking panels L3 and L4 arefolded towards the outside E2" of the end wall panel AE2, a second gaphaving a second transverse extension is formed between the locking portionsL3b, L4b facing each other. The transverse extension of the second gap issmaller than the transverse extension of the first gap.
As shown e.g. in figure 1, the first end wall E1 comprises a lockingtongue LT1, and the second end wall E2 comprises a locking tongue LT2.The locking tongue LT1 is connected to an upper side E1u of the first end wallpanel AE1. The locking tongue LT1 extends in the longitudinal direction L (asseen in a flat-laid state of the package) from first end wall panel AE1 towardsa free end LT1e of the locking tongue LT1. The locking tongue LT2 isconnected to an upper side E2u of the second end wall panel AE2. Thelocking tongue LT2 extends in the longitudinal direction L (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package) from second end wall panel AE2 towards a free endLT2e of the locking tongue LT2.
The locking tongue LT1 has an insertion portion LT1' having atransverse extension LT1T being smaller than the transverse extension GT1of the first gap G1 between the locking panels L1 and L2.
The locking tongue LT2 has an insertion portion LT2' having atransverse extension LT2T being smaller than the transverse extension of thefirst gap between the locking panels L3 and L4. ln this design with a second gap G2 present, the insertion portion LT1'has a transverse extension LT1T being greater than the transverse extensionGT2 of the second gap G2 between the locking panels L1 and L2. Similarly, the insertion portion LT2' has a transverse extension LT2T being greater thanthe transverse extension of the second gap between the locking panels L3and L4. lt may be noted that the gaps G1 and G2 need not be the same on thetwo end walls E1, E2. lt is however preferred that the package 1 issymmetrical as shown in the figures. Thus, in the preferred embodiments, thefirst gap G1 between the locking panels L1 and L2 is equal to the first gapbetween the locking panels L3 and L4 and the second gap G2 between thelocking panels L1 and L2 is equal to the second gap between the lockingpanels L3 and L4.
As mentioned above and as shown in figures 1a and 1b, the package 1is formed from a blank.
As shown in figures 2 and 3 and especially figures 4 and 5, the blank is folded and is held in erected state by folding the locking tongue LT1, 11 LT2 downwards from the upper side E1 u, E2u of respective side wall paneldownwardly outside the locking portions L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b as indicated byarrow A in figure 5 and by inserting the free end LT1e, LT2e of the lockingtongue LT1, LT2 in the first gap G1 between the gap portions L1a, L2a, L3a,L4a as indicated by arrow B and further folding and inserting the free endLT1e, LT2e of the locking tongue LT1, LT2 between the locking portions L1b,L2b, L3b, L4b and the outside E1 E2" of the respective end wall panel AE1,AE2.
With such a design it is possible to provide a package having no cutedges in the interior of the package, whereby it is possible to provide amoisture resistant interior e.g. be simply coating one of the major surfaces ofthe blank. lt may however be noted that the design of the package 1 asdiscussed above is also useful for a design where there are no corner panels(of the kind that will be discussed in detail below). ln fact, a package beingprovided with the features disclosed above could be designed such that theend wall panels AE1, AE2 and the inner side wall panels AIS1, AlS2 extendalongside each other at the corners C1, C2, C3, C4 of the package 1. Theprovision of the locking panels L1, L2, L3, L4 and the locking tongues LT1,LT2 provides a locking system that may be used to hold the package 1 in anerected state. Such a package 1 may be used to pack different goods. lf itdesirable to pack wet products, it is e.g. possible to provide a plastic baginside the package 1. However, the design of the package 1 is such that it isalso possible to provide corner panels AC1, AC2, AC3, AC4 thatinterconnects the end wall panels AE1, AE2 with the inner side wall panelsAIS1, AlS2 as will be discussed in more detail below. lt may be noted that by providing the locking panels L1, L2, L3, L4 onthe outer side wall panels AOS1, AOS2 and by providing them with theirrespective gap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a and locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b,L4b in combination with the provision and position of the locking tongues LT1,LT2, it is possible to lock the package 1 in an erected state without using anyadhesive. lt may be noted that in the disclosed inventive design any lifting of thepackage 1 in the handles naturally formed by the locking tongues LT1, LT2 12 will actually force the locking tongues LT1, LT2 towards the locked position(along the direction indicated by arrow B in figure 5). Moreover, since thelocking tongues LT1, LT2 are folded such that they basically form a foldedhandle, there will be no cut edge which otherwise would have a tendency toget caught in the storemen's gloves when the storemen puts the package in astack and withdraws his hands. lt may be noted that it in the disclosed design the extension of the firstgap G1 and the width LT1T, LT2T ofthe insertion portion LT1', LT2' arechosen such that the folded locking tongue LT1, LT2 forms a useful handle oneach end E1, E2 of the package 1. lt may be noted that the height position of the handle on the end wallE1, E2 may be chosen differently by changing the, as seen in the flat-laidstate, transversal extension L1aT, L2aT, L3aT, L4aT of the gap portion L1a,L2a, L3a, L4a. A comparably longer transversal extension of the gap portionwill result in a higher height position of the handle. lt is preferred that therespective gap portion has a transversal extension being such that atransition edge L1abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abe between the respective gapportion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a and locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b ispositioned at a height position on the end wall E1, E2 between 25% and 75%of the height of the end wall as measured from the inside of the bottom panelA2. The respective transition edge L1abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abe between therespective locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b and the respective gap portionL1a, L2a, L3a, L4a may extend in the longitudinal direction as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1. This transition edge L1abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abewill thereby extend horizontally on the outside of the end wall E1, E2 whenthe package 1 is in the erected state.
The above discussed provision of locking portions L1b, L2b, L3b, L4band gap portions L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a and the resulting gaps G1, G2 may alsobe said be provided by the respective locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b ofthe respective locking panel L1, L2, L3, L4 having, as seen along thelongitudinal direction and in a flat-laid state of the package 1, an extensionL1bL, L2bL, L3bL, L4bL from the respective outer side wall panel AOS1,AOS2 being greater than an extension L1aL, L2aL, L3aL, L4aL of the 13 respective gap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a of the respective locking panel L1,L2, L3, L4.
The height position of the gaps G1, G2 may be said to be provided bythe respective locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b of the respective lockingpanel L1, L2, L3, L4 being, as seen along the transversal direction and in aflat-laid state of the package 1, positioned closer to the bottom panel A2 thanthe respective gap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a of the respective locking panelL1, L2, L3, L4. Thereby will the gap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a be positionedcloser to the bottom than the locking portion L1b, L2b, L3b, L4b when theinner and outer side wall panels AIS1, AOS1, AlS2, AOS2 are folded relativeto each other and form the respective side wall S1, S2.
As mentioned above, the overall design of the locking panels L1, L2,L3, L4 and locking tongues LT1, LT2 allows for the package 1 to be designedwith corner panels AG1, AG2, AG3, AG4. ln the disclosed preferred design, ateach corner G1, G2, G3, G4 of the bottom panel A2, the end wall panels AE1,AE2 and the inner side wall panels AIS1, AIS2 are interconnected by a cornerpanel AG1, AG2, AG3, AG4 being foldable as overlapping triangular flapstowards an outside E1", E2" of the end wall panels AE1, AE2 as shown infigure 3.
As shown in figure 1a, the respective locking panel L1, L2, L3, L4 may,as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, extend longitudinally at least partlyalongside the respective corner panel AG1, AG2, AG3, AG4 and may as seenalong the transverse direction be positioned outside the respective cornerpanel AG1, AG2, AG3, AG4. Thereby will the locking panels L1, L2, L3, L4, asshown in figures 3 and 4, become positioned outside the corner panels AG1,AG2, AG3, AG4 as the package 1 is erected.
