Description

SURGICAL PROBE POSITIONING DEVICE TECHNICAL FIELD The present disclosure relates in general to the field of interstitial thermotherapy of a treatment lesion associated with at least an area of a tumour, using surgical probes for emitting diffused light. More particularly the invention relates to using surgical probes for thermal treatment of tissue using electromagnetic radiation and even more particularly to accurate positioning and holding of said surgical probes during the treatment.
BACKGROUND The treatment of tissues by electromagnetic radiation in the form of laser beams is known. Typically a laser source produces a beam of laser light which is fed via a waveguide, for example an optical fibre, though the body of a surgical probe to a light-transmission probe tip from which the light can leave the surgical probe and heat up the tissue in the vicinity of the probe tip. This type of treatment requires a high degree of precision in correct positioning of the surgical probes in order to concentrate the heat transfer to an intended target area of the tumour. Incorrect positioning of the surgical probe will result in lesser treatment effect and may potentially damage surrounding tissue. In many applications, such as for example treatment of a prostate gland with a tumour, the surrounding areas are sensitive to unintended damage which may result in serious negative ramifications for the patient. The high requirements for precision positioning of the surgical probe have resulted in many elaborate and complicated known positioning devices. Most of these positioning devices include cumbersome support structures including trusses that are applied over the operation incision on a patient. A drawback with known types of positioning devices for surgical probes is that their complexity and size may impede the surgeon's operational work. Another drawback is that the complex positioning devices are difficult to remove quickly in case of sudden haemorrhages. The complexity of known existing positioning devices also leads to relatively high manufacturing costs.
SUMMARY Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention preferably seek to mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more deficiencies, disadvantages or issues in the art, such as the above-identified, singly or in any combination by providing a surgical probe positioning device according to the appended patent claims.
Hence, the object of the invention is to provide an improved probe positioning device for the surgical probe which is simple to use with maintained precision, yet uncomplicated and easy to apply and remove. More particularly, the invention provides a surgical probe positioning device for holding a surgical probe in a predetermined position during a surgical operation procedure. The positioning device has a structural frame element provided with holding means for said surgical probe and attachment means for fixating the structural frame element over an operation incision on a patient. The device is especially characterized in that said structural frame element comprises a longitudinal strip and that said holding means comprises at least one positioning slot in said longitudinal strip for receiving and holding the surgical probe. The positioning slot exhibits an entrance section and a probe retaining section, said entrance section being open in a transversal direction of the longitudinal strip.
In a favourable embodiment of the invention the attachment means comprises adhesive tape applied on at least one distal end of the longitudinal strip and on at least one side of an operation incision on a patient.
In a useful practical embodiment of the invention, the longitudinal strip is provided with a multiplicity of positioning slots placed between two distal ends of the longitudinal strip.
Conveniently, in one favourable embodiment, the longitudinal strip is provided with a first set of positioning slots having slot dimensions adapted for a first type of surgical probe and a second set of slots having slot dimensions adapted for a second type of surgical probe.
Favourably, the first set of positioning slots and the second set of positioning slots are arranged with predetermined mutual distances along the longitudinal strip, forming a template for positioning said first type of surgical probe and said second type of surgical probe at a predetermined mutual distance.
In one feasible embodiment, the longitudinal strip bridges the operation incision on a patient.
Advantageously, the retaining section of the positioning slot is spiral shaped and includes a central hook-shaped portion dimensioned to at least partially encompass a surgical probe.
Preferably, the central hook-shaped portion is dimensioned to at least partially encompass a surgical probe with a press fit so as to firmly grip the surgical probe and fixate its insertion depth.
In one embodiment of the invention, the entrance section of the positioning slot is narrower than the retaining section thereof, creating a snap-in lock for the surgical probe. Here too, the retaining section of the positioning slot is dimensioned to at least partially encompass a surgical probe with a press fit so as to firmly grip the surgical probe and fixate its insertion depth.
Favourably, the longitudinal strip is made of a plastic material enabling it to be cut to a suitable length for individual operation incisions.
Furthermore, in a well-functioning embodiment of the invention, the longitudinal strip is substantially flat and exhibits a rectangular cross-section with a height not exceeding 25% of its width.
It should be emphasized that the terms “comprises/comprising” and “exhibits, exhibiting” when used in this specification are used to specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps or components but does not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, components or groups thereof.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art. The terminology used in the detailed description of the embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings is not intended to be limiting of the invention. In the drawings, like numbers refer to like elements.
With initial reference to Fig. 1, this figure shows a perspective view of a surgical probe positioning device 10 according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention. The surgical probe positioning device 10 is adapted for holding a surgical probe 20 in a predetermined position during a surgical operation procedure. The positioning device 10 has a structural frame element 30 provided with holding means 40 for the surgical probe 20 and attachment means 50 for fixating the structural frame element 30 over an operation incision 60 on a patient. According to the invention, the structural frame element comprises a longitudinal strip 70. Furthermore, the holding means 40 comprises at least one positioning slot 80 in said longitudinal strip 70 for receiving and holding the surgical probe 20. In the shown embodiment, the longitudinal strip 70 bridges the operation incision 60. Each positioning slot 80 exhibits an entrance section 90 and a probe retaining section 100. The entrance section 90 is open in a transversal direction of the longitudinal strip 70. In the shown embodiment, the attachment means 50 comprises adhesive tape applied on at least one distal end 110 of the longitudinal strip 70 and on at least one side A, B of the operation incision 60 on a patient. The adhesive tape 50 at each distal end 110 is fastened on a surgical retention claw 120, allowing easy re-positioning and removal if required. Furthermore, in the shown embodiment, the longitudinal strip 70 is provided with a multiplicity of positioning slots 80 placed between two distal ends 110 of the longitudinal strip 70.
The longitudinal strip 70 as shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a first set of positioning slots 80 having slot dimensions adapted for a first type of surgical probe 20 and a second set of positioning slots 80 having slot dimensions adapted for a second type of surgical probe 20. A probe 20 of the first type may for example be a heat probe, whereas a probe 20 of the second type may be a temperature measuring probe. Typically, a heat probe is wider in diameter than a temperature measuring probe. In a common example, the heat probe has a diameter of 3mm, whereas the narrower temperature measurement probe has a diameter of 2 mm.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the surgical probe positioning device 10 according to an alternative exemplifying embodiment of the invention. Here, two separate longitudinal strips 70 are fastened along each side A, B of the operation incision 60 on a patient. Similar to the embodiment described initially with reference to Fig. 1, the longitudinal strips 70 are fastened with attachment means 50 in the form of adhesive tape applied on at distal ends 110 of the longitudinal strips 70 on each side A, B of the operation incision 60 on a patient. The adhesive tape 50 at each distal end 110 is fastened on a surgical retention claws 120, allowing easy re-positioning and removal if required.
