Abstract

The present invention relates to an arrangement for providing a reliable ground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel (IP) of a vehicle (1). Said ground source comprises an elongated ground member (100) associated with a wire configuration of the instrument panel (IP). The arrangement comprises fastening means (I; II) comprising fastening elements for connecting said elongated ground member (100) as well as attaching said instrument panel (IP) to ground (2a) of the vehicle (1) via the same connection points (C1, C2).The present invention also relates to a vehicle.

Description

AN ARRANGEIVIENT FOR PROVIDING A GROUND SOURCE OF AVEHICLE TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to an arrangement for providing a reliable groundsource of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel of a vehicle according to the preamble of claim 1. The invention also relates to a vehicle.
BACKG ROUND ART Vehicles of today, such as trucks, are equipped with various electronicdevices or electrical devices also denoted power consuming devices, such asactuators, control units, etc. These power consuming devices of the vehiclemay be powered by an electrical machine being connected to an engine ofthe vehicle. Said power consuming devices may alternatively be powered byan energy storage means, such as a separate battery or an electrical storagemeans of a hybrid configuration being arranged for propulsion of the vehicle.Such power consuming devices may be arranged in connection to theinstrument panel of the vehicle.
Said power consuming devices need to be connected to ground source.Such power consuming devices are today connected to a number of differentground sources for providing a reference voltage of said devices.
US20150099389A1 discloses a connecting structure for ground terminalfitting configured for fixing and electrically conductively connecting the groundterminal fitting in surface contact with a ground contact surface of agrounding member such as a body of a vehicle.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement for providinga reliable ground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panelof a vehicle which facilitates easy assembly and better control of the groundsource associated with the instrument panel.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION These and other objects, apparent from the following description, areachieved by an arrangement, a method and a vehicle as set out in theappended independent claims. Preferred embodiments of the arrangement and method are defined in appended dependent claims.
Specifically an object of the invention is achieved by an arrangement forproviding a reliable ground source of an electrical configuration for aninstrument panel of a vehicle. Said ground source comprises an elongatedground member associated with a wire configuration of the instrument panel.The arrangement comprises fastening means comprising fastening elementsfor connecting said elongated ground member as well as attaching saidinstrument panel to ground of the vehicle via the same connection points.
By thus connecting said elongated ground member as well as attaching saidinstrument panel to ground of the vehicle via the same connection points bymeans of the same fastening elements easy assembly and efficientgrounding is obtained.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said ground source isarranged to provide at least one access point along said elongated groundmember, wherein said at least one access point is adapted to be connectedto said wire configuration for providing ground to an electrical component ofsaid electrical configuration of said vehicle. Hereby said system provides forhigh reliability, cost effective manufacturing and installation as well as presenting a space saving configuration. The total length of said wireconfiguration may be kept to a minimum, which in turn provide a spacesaving configuration and reduced costs regarding wire material. Saidelectrical component may be an electronic component. Said electrical component may be referred to as a power consuming unit.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said elongated groundmember comprises a ring terminal at each end portion of the elongatedground member the respective ring terminal having an opening for receivingsaid fastening element. By using a ring terminal at each end portion of theelongated ground member efficient grounding is facilitated at the same timeas easy connection of the elongated ground member and attachment of theinstrument panel to ground of the vehicle via the same connection points isfacilitated.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said instrument panelcomprises a support crossbeam having an opening at the respective endportion for receiving the respective fastening element via said ring terminal.By using a crossbeam having an opening at the respective end portion forreceiving the respective fastening element via said ring terminal efficientgrounding is facilitated at the same time as easy connection of the elongatedground member and attachment of the instrument panel to ground of thevehicle via the same connection points is facilitated, where said crossbeamprovides an efficient support for the instrument panel.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said fastening meanscomprises a fixation member for the respective ring terminal, said fixationmember being configured to be arranged to be attached to the ring terminaland the crossbeam. By thus attaching a fixation member to the ring terminaland crossbeam fixation of the ring terminal relative to the crossbeam isfacilitated thus reducing risk of movement including pivoting of the ringterminal during assembly wherein the risk for impairing the groundconnection is reduced.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said fixation member isconfigured to be arranged between the ring terminal and the crossbeam atsaid connection points such that a surface of the fixation member is incontact with the surface of the ring terminal. Hereby efficient groundconnection is obtained thus improving the ground connection.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement the respective fixationmember has an opening essentially corresponding to the opening of the ringterminal and being configured to be aligned with the opening of the ringterminal. Hereby efficient connection for the fastening element, e.g. a screwmember, is facilitated for efficient ground connection. By thus having anopening of the fixation member essentially corresponding to the opening ofthe ring terminal the opening of the crossbeam may have an ovalconfiguration so as to allow certain tolerances without negatively affecting the ground connection.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement the respective fixationmember comprises pivot stop means for preventing pivoting of said fixationmember when arranged in connection to an opening of said crossbeam.Hereby pivoting of the ring terminal relative to the crossbeam is efficiently prevented.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said pivot stop meanscomprises at least one protrusion configured to protrude into the opening ofsaid crossbeam when arranged in connection to an opening of saidcrossbeam and/or at least one protrusion arranged in connection to an edgeof the crossbeam. Hereby pivoting of the ring terminal relative to thecrossbeam is efficiently prevented.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement the respective fixationmember comprises retaining means for retaining the fixation member on thering terminal. By thus retaining the fixation member on the ring terminal assembly is facilitated in that the ring terminal of the elongated ground member may be easily attached to the opening of the crossbeam byintroducing the protrusions of the fixation member such that it is hanging inconnection to the opening of the crossbeam. Attachment to the ground of thevehicle by means of introducing a fastening element such as a screwmember may then easily be performed as the ring element is positioned and aligned in connection to the opening of the crossbeam.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement the respective fasteningelement comprises a screw member and a nut member so as to provide ascrew joint at said connection points for attaching the instrument panel to andproviding grounding at said ground of the vehicle. Hereby efficient groundingat said ground of the vehicle and efficient attachment of the instrument panel to the ground of the vehicle is obtained.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement threads of said nut memberare arranged to be created by means of said screw member when creatingsaid screw joint. Hereby efficient connection between screw and nut and thusefficient grounding is obtained.
Specifically an object of the invention is achieved by a vehicle comprising an arrangement as set out herein.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 schematically illustrates a side view of a vehicle 1 according to thepresent invention. The exemplified vehicle 1 is a heavy vehicle in the shapeof a truck. The vehicle according to the present invention could be anysuitable vehicle. The vehicle comprises an arrangement for providing areliable ground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel ofthe vehicle according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 schematically illustrates part of an arrangement for providing a reliableground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel of a vehicle.
Said ground source comprises an elongated ground member 100. Saidelongated ground member 100 is configured to be associated with aninstrument panel of a vehicle such as the vehicle 1 in fig. 1. The elongatedground member 100 has a first end portion E1 and an opposite second endportion E2. According to an embodiment the elongated ground member 100comprises a ring terminal 101, 102 at each end portion E1, E2 of theelongated ground member 100. The arrangement for providing a reliableground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel of avehicle comprises fastening means comprising fastening elements forconnecting said elongated ground member as well as attaching saidinstrument panel to ground of a vehicle such the vehicle 1 in fig. 1 via thesame connection points. Embodiments of the fastening means are shownwith reference to fig. 3 and fig. 5a-b and 6a-b.
Said elongated ground member 100 is provided with a number of accesspoints. According to this embodiment said elongated ground member 100 isprovided with four access points, namely a first access point P1, a secondaccess point P2, a third access point P3 and a fourth access point P4.According to this example said four access points P1-P4 are substantiallyevenly distributed along said elongated ground member 100. Said elongatedground member 100 may have an arbitrary suitable number of access points.The access points may be distributed in any suitable way. The number ofaccess points and a distribution of said access points along said elongatedground member is a choice of design, paying regard to the power consuming units which are to be connected to said elongated ground member 100.
Each of said access point has a number of electrical wires connectedbetween said elongated ground member 100 and a number of powerconsuming units for providing ground to said power consuming units.According to this example said first access point P1 has two electrical wires,namely a first electrical wire W1a and a second electrical wire W1b. Hereinsaid second access point P2 is provided with two electrical wires, namely afirst electrical wire W2a and a second electrical wire W2b. Said third accesspoint P3 is provided with two electrical wires, namely a first electrical wireW3a and a second electrical wire W3b. Said fourth access point P4 isprovided with two electrical wires, namely a first electrical wire W4a and asecond electrical wire W4b. lt should be noted that each of said accesspoints P1 -P4 may be provided with a suitable number of electrical wires eachbeing electrically connected to a respective power consuming unit. Accordingto one example each of said access points P1 -P4 may be provided with morethan ten separate electrical wires. According to one example each of saidaccess points P1 -P4 may be provided with more than fifty separate electricalwires. Each of said access points may be distributed in a way such that thetotal required length of said electrical wires connecting provided powerconsuming units with said elongated ground member is minimized. Herein said wire configuration refers to said provided electrical wires connecting said elongated ground member and said power consuming units. Said electricalwires of said wire configuration may consist of any suitable electrical wires, such as for example insulated copper wires.
For sake of clarity, only four power consuming units are present in fig. 2. lt isillustrated that said first access point P1 is provided with said first electricalwire W1a and said second electrical wire W1 b. Said first electrical wire W1ais connected to a first power consuming unit 110a. Said second electricalwire W1b is connected to a second power consuming unit 110b. lt is furtherillustrated that said second access point P2 is provided with said firstelectrical wire W2a and said second electrical wire W2b. Said first electricalwire W2a is connected to a first power consuming unit 120a. Said secondelectrical wire W2b is connected to a second power consuming unit 120b.Hereby said power consuming units 110a, 110b, 120a and 120b areconnected to said elongated ground member 100 via said electrical wiresW1a, W1b, W2a and W2b, respectively. Said power consuming units may be denoted power consuming devices. lt should be understood that said electrical wires of said third access point P3and said fourth access point P4 also are connected to a respective dedicated power consuming unit, even though it not illustrated in Figure 2.
According to an example at least one electrical wire of any access point maynot be connected to a power consuming unit, but may function as back-up incase yet another power consuming unit is to be installed in said vehicle 100.
Said power consuming units may be any suitable power consuming units.Said power consuming units may for example be anyone chosen from agroup comprising: electronic control unit, electrical instrument, electricalmachine, I/O-unit, actuator means, auxiliary device, etc. Said powerconsuming units may be any power consuming units requiring provision ofelectrical ground. Said electrical configuration may comprise said power consuming units.
Herein said power consuming units are powered by at least one powersource, such as a battery package or an electrical machine. For sake ofsimplicity power sources for electrically powering said power consuming unitsare not illustrated or depicted in greater detail herein. The description ofvarious embodiments of the present invention is focused on provision ofground (GND) to said power consuming units. According to one example“ground” herein is intended to be a reference voltage, such as for example OVolts.
Fig. 3 schematically illustrates a perspective view of a part of the vehicle infig. 1 including the cabin 2 provided with an arrangement for providing a reliable ground source of an electrical configuration for an instrument panel.
Said ground source comprises an elongated ground member 100 associatedwith a wire configuration of the instrument panel IP. The arrangementcomprises fastening means I; ll comprising fastening elements for connectingsaid elongated ground member 100 as well as attaching said instrumentpanel IP to ground 2a of the vehicle via the same connection points C1, C2.Ground of the vehicle 1 is constituted by parts 2a of the body of the cabin 2,which may also be denoted as the body in white, BIW.
For purposes of illustration a wind screen 3 and a steering wheel 4 of saidcabin is schematically illustrated.
Fig. 4a schematically illustrates a cross sectional plan view of part of anarrangement for providing a reliable ground source of an electricalconfiguration for an instrument panel IP according to an embodiment of thepresent invention, fig. 4b schematically illustrates a rear perspective view ofthe arrangement in fig. 4a, fig. 5a schematically illustrates a front view of thearrangement in fig. 4a and fig. 5b schematically illustrates a front perspective view of the arrangement in fig. 4a.
Fig. 6a schematically illustrates a detail D1 in fig. 5a comprising a fasteningmeans I according to an embodiment of the present invention and fig. 6b 11 schematically illustrates a detail D2 in fig. 5b comprising the fastening means lin fig. 6a.
The instrument panel IP comprises a support crossbeam 10 for supportingthe instrument panel IP. The crossbeam 10 has openings O1 at therespective end portion for attaching the instrument panel to the vehicle body2. The crossbeam has upper opening O1 and lower opening at the respectiveside, the upper opening O1 of one side being illustrated in e.g. fig. 5b.
Said ground source comprises an elongated ground member 200 associatedwith a wire configuration of the instrument panel IP. The arrangementcomprises fastening means I for connecting said elongated ground member200 as well as attaching said instrument panel IP to ground of the vehicle viathe same connection points C1. ln fig. 4a-b, 5a-b a portion of the instrumentpanel IP and one connection point C1 and thus fastening means I for thatconnection point is illustrated.
The fastening means I comprises fastening elements 30 for connecting saidelongated ground member 200 as well as attaching said instrument panel IPto ground of the vehicle via the same connection points C1. According to anembodiment of the arrangement the fastening element comprises a screwmember 32 and a nut member 34 so as to provide a screw joint at saidconnection points C1 for attaching the instrument panel IP to and providinggrounding at said ground of the vehicle. The instrument panel IP is accordingto an embodiment arranged to be connected by means of said fasteningelements 30 at the lower opening of the crossbeam 10 at the respective endportion of the crossbeam 10.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement threads of said nut member34 are arranged to be created by means of said screw member 32 when creating said screw joint.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said ground source isarranged to provide at least one access point P along said elongated ground 12 member 200. Said at least one access point P is adapted to be connected tosaid wire configuration for providing ground to an electrical component 210 ofsaid electrical configuration of said vehicle.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said elongated groundmember 200 comprises a ring terminal 201 at each end portion of theelongated ground member 200 the respective ring terminal 201 having anopening for receiving said fastening element 30. One ring terminal 201 isshown in fig. 6a and 6b.
The instrument panel IP thus comprises a support crossbeam 10 having anopening at the respective end portion for receiving the respective fastening element 30 via said ring terminal 201.
The fastening means l comprises a fixation member 20 for the respective ringterminal 201. The fixation member 20 is illustrated in fig. 6a-b attached to thering terminal 201 and the crossbeam 10. The fixation member 20 is described in more detail with reference to fig. 7-8a-d.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement said fixation member 20 isconfigured to be arranged between the ring terminal 201 and the crossbeam10 at said connection points C1 such that a surface of the fixation member isin contact with the surface 201a of the ring terminal 201a as illustrated in fig.6a-b.
The fixation member 20 has as illustrated in e.g. fig. 7 an opening 02essentially corresponding to the opening of the ring terminal 201 and being configured to be aligned with the opening of the ring terminal 201.
According to an embodiment of the arrangement the respective fixationmember comprises pivot stop means 22c, 22d, 26a, see e.g. fig. 7, forpreventing pivoting of said fixation member when arranged in connection to an opening of said crossbeam 10. 13 According to an embodiment of the arrangement said pivot stop means 22c,22d, 26a comprises at least one protrusion configured to protrude into theopening of said crossbeam when arranged in connection to an opening ofsaid crossbeam and/or at least one protrusion 26a arranged in connection toan edge 10b of the crossbeam 10. See fig. 6b and fig. 7.
The fixation member 20 comprises retaining means 24a, 24b for retaining thefixation member 20 on the ring terminal 201 as illustrated in e.g. fig. 6a.
Fig. 7 schematically illustrates a perspective view of a fixation member 20 ofthe fastening means in fig. 6a according to an embodiment of the present invenfion.
The fixation member 20 has a front side 20a configured to face a ringterminal and a backside 20b configured to face a crossbeam of an instrumentpanel when assembled. The fixation member 20 has an upper portion 22 an intermediate portion 24 and a lower portion 26.
The upper portion 22 comprises an opening O2 configured to be essentiallyaligned with the opening of a ring terminal such as the ring terminal of theelongated ground member in fig. 4a-b, 5a-b and an opening of a crossbeamof an instrument panel such as the crossbeam in fig. 4a-b, 5a-b.
The upper portion 22 has a front surface 22a and an opposite back surface22b. The front surface 22a of the upper portion 22 is configured to be incontact with a surface of the ring terminal. The back surface 22b of the upperportion 22 is configured to be in contact with the surface of the crossbeam.
The upper portion 22 comprises a first protrusion 22c arranged to protrudefrom said opening 02 out on the back side 20b of the fixation member 20 anda second protrusion 22d arranged to protrude from said opening 02 out onthe back side 20b of the fixation member 20 a certain circumferentialdistance from the first protrusion 22c such that a pivot stop means 22c, 22dfor preventing pivoting in the opening of the crossbeam and to facilitate 14 alignment of the opening of the crossbeam when attaching the instrumentpanel and elongated round member to ground of the vehicle. The protrusions22c, 22d are configured to protrude into the opening of the crossbeam of theinstrument panel when arranged in connection to an opening of saidcrossbeam. The protrusions 22c, 22d are according to an embodiment cutouts of the fixation member 20 which have been bent to form said pivot stop means 22c, 22d.
The intermediate portion 24 comprises retaining means 24a, 24b for retainingthe fixation member 20 on the ring terminal. The retaining means 24a, 24bcomprises a first protruding portion 24a and a second protruding portion 24b,said protruding portions 24a, 24b protruding from the front side 20a andextending in the longitudinal extension of the fixation member 20 along therespective longitudinal side of the intermediate portion 24 with a certaininclination towards each other so as to provide said retaining means forretaining a ring terminal. The protruding portions 24a, 24b are according toan embodiment cut outs of the fixation member 20 which have been bent to form said retaining means 24a, 24b.
The lower portion 26 comprises a protrusion 26a arranged to protrude fromthe back side 20b of the fixation member 20. The protrusion 26a is configured to be arranged in connection to an edge of the crossbeam.
Fig. 8a schematically illustrates a plan view of the fixation member in fig. 7,fig. 8b schematically illustrates a cross section A-A of the fixation member infig. 8a, fig. 8c schematically illustrates a cross section B-B of the fixationmember in fig. 8a and fig. 8d schematically illustrates a cross section C-C of the fixation member in fig. 8a.

Claims (13)

16 CLAIIVIS
1. An arrangement for providing a reliable ground source of an electricalconfiguration for an instrument panel (IP) of a vehicle (1), characterized inthat said ground source comprises an elongated ground member (100; 200)associated with a wire configuration (W1 a-W1 b, W2a, W2b, W3a, W3b, W4a,W4b; W) of the instrument panel (IP), comprising fastening means (l; II)comprising fastening elements (30) for connecting said elongated groundmember (100; 200) as well as attaching said instrument panel (IP) to ground(2a) of the vehicle (1) via the same connection points (C1, C2).
2. An arrangement according to claim 1, wherein said ground source isarranged to provide at least one access point (P1, P2, P3, P4; P) along saidelongated ground member (100; 200), wherein said at least one access point(P1, P2, P3, P4; P) is adapted to be connected to said wire configuration(W1a-W1b, W2a, W2b, W3a, W3b, W4a, W4b; W) for providing ground to anelectrical component (110a, 110b, 120a, 120b; 210, 220) of said electricalconfiguration of said vehicle (1 ).
3. An arrangement according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said elongated groundmember (100; 200) comprises a ring terminal (101, 102; 201) at each endportion of the elongated ground member (100; 200), the respective ringterminal having an opening for receiving said fastening element (30).
4. An arrangement according to claim 3, wherein said instrument panel (IP)comprises a support crossbeam (10) having an opening at the respective endportion for receiving the respective fastening element (30) via said ringterminal (101, 102; 201).
5. An arrangement according to claim 4, wherein said fastening means (I, ll)comprises a fixation member (20) for the respective ring terminal, saidfixation member (20) being configured to be arranged to be attached to thering terminal (101, 102; 201) and the crossbeam (10). 17

An arrangement according to claim 4 or 5, wherein said fixation member(20) is configured to be arranged between the ring terminal (101, 102; 201)and the crossbeam (10) at said connection points (C1, C2) such that asurface (22a) of the fixation member (20) is in contact with the surface (201a)of the ring terminal (201).
7. An arrangement according to any of claims 4-6, wherein the respectivefixation member (20) has an opening (O2) essentially corresponding to theopening of the ring terminal (101, 102; 201) and being configured to bealigned with the opening of the ring terminal (101, 102; 201).
8. An arrangement according to any of claims 4-7, wherein the respectivefixation member (20) comprises pivot stop means (22c, 22d, 26a) forpreventing pivoting of said fixation member (20) when arranged in connectionto an opening of said crossbeam (10).
9. An arrangement according to claim 8, wherein said pivot stop means(22c, 22d, 26a) comprises at least one protrusion (22c, 22d) configured toprotrude into the opening of said crossbeam (10) when arranged inconnection to an opening of said crossbeam (10) and/or at least oneprotrusion (26a) arranged in connection to an edge (10b) of the crossbeam(10).
10. An arrangement according to any of claims 4-9, wherein the respectivefixation member (20) comprises retaining means (24a, 24b) for retaining thefixation member (20) on the ring terminal (201).

An arrangement according to any preceding claims, wherein therespective fastening element (30) comprises a screw member (32) and a nutmember (34) so as to provide a screw joint at said connection points (C1, C2)for attaching the instrument panel (IP) to and providing grounding at said ground (2a) of the vehicle (1). 18
12. An arrangement according to claim 11, wherein threads of said nutmember (34) are arranged to be created by means of said screw member (32) when creating said screw joint.
13. A vehicle (1) comprising an arrangement according to any of claims 1-12.
