Abstract

The rig supports a sail which is fixed to a yard, the length of which corresponds to mast height on a usual sailing boat. This yard is at its central point hoisted to the top and astern of a mast, which is approximately half as long as the yard. The sail is sheeted with one or more lines to a highly located point in the stern of the boat. When the boat is sailing the yard assumes a vertical position and acts as mast. When the boat turns towards the wind, the yard also turns with the sail, so that its uppermost part is turned down towards the deck of the boat and the sail earlier lowest part goes up to the top. When the sail in this way is turned up and down the wind always comes in on a specific side of it. This provides in turn for the yard with advantage to be formed with an asymmetrical vane profiled cross-section so that it in company with the sail forms a unified vane profile.
