Description
7800l | f29 - 8 Another important object of the invention is to reduce the number of spring brakes required on a tandem trailer axle and thereby significantly reduce the cost of the trailer brake system.
Another important object of the invention is to prevent a compound effect in order to ensure that an emergency braking with the service brakes is not performed at the same time as a normal service braking takes place. This is achieved according to the invention in that the emergency device comprises means which respond to said fluid pressure reduction by directing the deactivation pressure to the service brake operating device to cause the latter to effect braking by connecting the service brake to the reservoir. During emergency braking or then. the vehicle is parked, both of which cause the fluid pressure level in the trailer supply line to relativt 1a to a relatively low level, the emergency brake device according to the invention blocks the connection between the supply line, the reservoir and the spring brake actuator while the deactivation pressure applied to the spring brake actuator is used. .
In a preferred embodiment, said emergency braking device comprises a piston which on one surface is subjected to the pressure level in said supply line and on its second surface for the force from spring means which piston is movable from a first position, in which it connects said supply line to the reservoir and the emergency brake and prevents connection between the reservoir and said service brake actuator to a second position in which it prevents connection between the reservoir, said supply line and the emergency brake and initiates connection between the emergency brake and the service brake actuator due to reduced pressure level in said supply line. predetermined level. Furthermore, there is a pressure-sensitive device which prevents connection between the service brake line and the service brake control device, when the piston is in said second position and the deactivation pressure is led to the service brake control device; this will prevent the service brakes from being damaged in the event that a normal service braking would be performed as these brakes are already affected by the deactivation pressure. Furthermore, a hole may be provided so that this deactivation pressure is reduced at a predetermined rate; thereby, an emergency braking will be performed 7800429-8 using the service brakes; while when parking the spring brakes are used only after the deactivation pressure has dropped to the predetermined low level, which is required to affect the spring brake.
These and other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment, given by way of example only, with reference to the single figure of the drawing, which shows a schematic illustration of a typical trailer brake system with an emergency brake valve. , which is made according to the invention, shown in a cross section.
According to the drawing, an emergency brake valve, generally designated 10, includes a housing 12 having an inlet port 14, which is connected to the trailer supply line 16, and another inlet port 18, which is connected to the trailer operating brake line 20. Under normal operating conditions, the pressure is maintained. in the supply line 16 at a relatively constant level of the air compressor, which is driven by the vehicle engine.
However, during a fault in the brake system, the pressure in the supply line 16 is reduced to a relatively low pressure level by the conventional towing vehicle protection valve (not shown), which is supported by the towing vehicle part of the towing vehicle trailer combination. The trailer operating brake line 20 is normally at a low pressure level but when braking takes place by actuation of a conventional brake æm, æmümmæmdi fi w fifi mas fi mmuwm not shown, mßfmü pressure through the operating brake line 20 to effect an operating braking. the valve 10 also has outlet ports 22, 24, which are connected to the service brake reservoirs 26 and 28, respectively. A further port 30 on the valve 10 leads to deactivation ports 32, 34 on common spring actuators which are generally designated 36 and 38. The spring brake actuators 36 and 38 are conventional and may be of any known design. Conventional spring brake actuators of the schematically shown type have a spring chamber in which a relatively strong spring is held "off" by fluid pressure directed to the deactivation ports 32 and 34. The spring brake actuators 36 and 38 also usually include an operating brake chamber which is actuated to perform an operating braking by passing fluid pressure through the operating ports 40, 42. Since the spring brake actuators 36 and 38 are conventional, they are not described in detail. vapuuzø-s 4 1 The eluid pressure to the ports 40 and 42 is regulated by relay valves which are generally denoted by 44 and 46. These valves are also of conventional construction and do not need to be described in more detail. The primary ports 48, 50 of the valves 44 and 46 lead to an outlet port 53 of the emergency brake valve 10.
The housing 12 has within it a hole generally designated 52. The hole 52 is stepped to define a larger diameter section 54, a smaller diameter section 56, a section 58 of substantially the same diameter as the section 54, a section 60. with an even larger diameter and a section 62 with the largest diameter. A correspondingly stepped piston 64 is slidably mounted in the hole 52 and forms a pressure sensitive surface 66 which is subjected to the pressure level in the inlet port 142. A spring 68 resiliently presses the piston 64 against the position shown.
The piston 64 has seals 70, 72 which sealingly engage the portion 56 of the hole 52 depending on the position of the piston. The piston 64 also has seals 74, 76 and 78, which sealingly engage the portions 58, 60 and 62, respectively, of the hole 52. The portion 62 of the hole 52 having the largest diameter communicates with the reservoirs 26 and 28 through channels 80. 82, which lead to the outlet ports 22 and 24, respectively. Check valves 84, 86 are arranged in the channels 80, 82 and allow unobstructed flow into the reservoirs 26 and 28 by preventing flow in the opposite direction. A pressure difference sensitive vessel 88 is provided in a channel 90 which connects the outlet port 22 to the outlet port 24 and connects a channel 92 to the higher of the pressure levels at the outlet ports 22 and 24. The channel 92 communicates with the portion 58 of the stepped hole 52. The outlet port Communicates with the portion 56 of the hole 52 through a channel 94. A pressure difference sensitive shuttle 96, which is identical to the shuttle 88, connects the higher of the pressure levels at the inlet port 18 and the portion 54 of the hole 52 to the outlet port 53; A throttle hole 98 connects the portion 54 of the hole 52 to the surrounding atmosphere. Yet another channel 100 connects the inlet port 20 to the inlet port 16. A check valve 102 in the channel 100 allows flow from the inlet port 18 to the port 14 but prevents flow in the opposite direction. The channel 100 is also provided with a throttle hole 104 which restricts the flow through the channel 100 to a predetermined speed. 1600429-8 Working function The various components of the emergency brake valve are shown in the drawing g in the positions they occupy when the air brake system is completely emptied. When the vehicle is to be put into operation, the engine is started, whereby the conventional air compressor is put into operation. The air compressor generates fluid pressure through the trailer feed line 16. Fluid pressure in this line acts on the surface 66 of the piston 64, whereby it is pressed upwards in the drawing against the action of the force exerted on it by the spring 68. When this occurs the seal 70 is brought into sealing contact with the part 56 of the hole 52, thereby blocking the connection between the port 30 and the portion 54 of the hole 52 through the channel 94. At the same time, the seal 72 is brought out of sealing contact with the portion 56 and into the larger diameter portion 58. At the same time, the seal 60 is brought to the part 62 of the hole 52, which has a larger diameter, whereby substantially unobstructed flow between the supply line 16 and the channel 80 is initiated. Since the fluid pressure in the duct 80 is also led to the duct 82 and because the pressure level in the reservoirs 26 and 28 is relatively low, the higher pressure levels in the ducts 80 and 82 open the non-return valves 84 and 86 so that the fluid pressure is passed through the outlet ports 22 and 24 and the service brake reservoirs 26 and 28. thereby charging. Since the seal 72 has been brought to the larger diameter portion 58, substantially unhindered flow between the channels 92 and 94 is allowed at the same time. Therefore, the relatively high pressure level directed to the reservoirs 26 and 28 is also passed through the outlet port 30 to the deactivation ports 32 and 34 of the spring brake actuators 36 38. The deactivation pressure overcomes the said spring, which is located inside the actuators 36 and 38, whereby the vehicle parking brakes are released. The vehicle can now be moved.
If a service braking is performed by affecting the conventional driver-controlled valve located in the driver's cab, fluid pressure is conducted through the service brake line 20 and the inlet port 18. While the portion 54 of the hole 52 has substantially atmospheric pressure due to the connection through the hole 98, the relatively high pressure the level at the port 18 the vessel 96 to the position shown in the drawing, whereby substantially unobstructed flow is allowed between the inlet port 18 and the outlet port 53. This pressure level at the outlet port 53 is led to the ports 48 and 50 of the relay valves 44 and 46. The relay valves 44 46 responds to the pressure level at ports 48 and 50 by initiating a flow connection between the fluid pressure stored in reservoirs 26 and 28 and corresponding ports 40 and 42 on spring brake actuators 36 and 38, respectively. The relay valves 44, 46 therefore provide a service braking in the usual way. When the said driver-controlled valve is released, the pressure level in the port 18 drops to a relatively low level, which causes the relay valves 44, 46 to reduce the fluid pressure which is led to the ports 40 and 42. During emergency braking, when a fault prevents normal operation of vehicle brake system, the pressure in the trailer supply line 16 is reduced by the hmwentüxæ fl læ traction vehicle protection valve, which is mounted on the vehicle. As the pressure in the supply line 16 drops, the pressure at the inlet port 14 is also reduced to a relatively low level, whereby the spring 68 presses the piston 64 to the position shown in the drawing. When this occurs, the seal 76 engages sealingly with the portion 60 of the hole 52, thereby preventing connection from the supply line 16 to the reservoirs 26 and 28. But the contents of the latter are retained therein as a result of the check valves 84 and 86. At the same time, the seal 72 is brought into sealing contact with the part 56 of the hole 52, whereby flow connection between the channel 92 and the channel 94 is interrupted. When the seal 72 is brought into sealing contact with the portion 56, the seal 70 is brought out of sealing contact with the portion 56 and into the larger diameter portion 54, thereby forming a flow connection between the channel 94 and the portion 54 of the hole 52. The portion 54 of the hole 52 is also, as previously stated, connected to the outlet port 53 through the shuttle 96. Since the pressure level at the inlet port 18, in the absence of service braking, is relatively low, unobstructed fluid flow is allowed through the outlet port 53. Therefore, the deactivation pressure at ports 32 and 34, which deactivates the spring actuators, will be directed directly to ports 48 and 50 on relay valves 44 and 46 through channel 94, portion 54 of hole 52, and outlet port 53. This pressure affects relay valves 44 and 46 on normal way to provide an emergency operation of the service brake. Of course, the pressure level in the chamber 54 will decrease at a predetermined rate due to the hole 98.
Då deaktiveringstrycket avtagit till en till- räckligt låg nivå, sedan trailern parkerats, blir fjäderbromsman- överdonen givetvis verksamma för att hålla fordonet på vanligt sätt .Consequently, after a given period of time, the pressure at the ports 32 and 34 will have completely disappeared, whereby the brakes can be actuated by the spring actuators. But because the hole 98 is so dimensioned that it allows a relatively limited flow speed - .76001429-8, the vehicle has previously been stopped by means of the service brake actuatorsß. The spring brakes are used only for parking. When the trailer is parked, the driver of course acts on the conventional push-pull valve in the driver's cab to bleed the trailer supply line 16. The deaeration of this supply line 16 when parking the trailer affects the valve 10 in exactly the same way as previously described in emergency braking to affect the service brake. na at parking. When the deactivation pressure has decreased to a sufficiently low level, after the trailer has been parked, the spring brake actuators will of course be effective to keep the vehicle in the usual way.
If a normal service braking were to be performed while the service brakes are affected by the deactivation pressure, the service brakes can be damaged because they cannot withstand the double operating pressure. Thus, if one attempts to perform an operating braking, after an emergency braking has taken place, the relatively high pressure level, which goes to the inlet port 18, is led through the channel 100 past the non-return valve 102 to the supply line 16 with relatively low pressure. It is observed that the supply line 16 during normal operation of the vehicle is constantly kept at a relatively high pressure level and vented only in the event of an emergency or when the vehicle is parked. During normal vehicle operation, the non-return valve 102 will consequently remain closed.
However, in an emergency or during a parking, any service braking will lead to the relatively low pressure level in the supply line 16 to avoid damage to the service brake actuators.
The throttle hole 104 is arranged to limit the flow rate through the channel 100 so that the trailer supply line 16 remains at a relatively low pressure level.
