Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Fibrous webs are surface-sized by applying to the web at a temperature of up to 210‹F. an aqueous solution of pH at most 6.0 containing at least 0.5% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol and 15 to 50% of boric acid, based on the weight of polyvinyl alcohol. In examples, the solution, which may also contain a wax emulsion, TiO 2 , or clay and TiO 2 , is applied to paper and paperboard by means of e.g. a size press, calender water box, or air knife coater.
