Abstract
1,152,979. Rollers. SKANDINAVISKA APPARATINDUSTRI A.B. SAIAP. 21 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 18592/67. Heading F2U. In a fluid-cooled or heated roller comprising inner and outer shells 2, 1, and a guide flange 19 defining a helical fluid flow path between inlet and outlet ports 7, the flange abuts the outer shell and is embedded in a heat insulating layer 18 on the inner shell. As shown, in a watercooled roller, the flange is formed of spring steel and the layer 18 of strips, e.g. of a glass fibre reinforced polyester resin. The strips are wound round the inner shell 2 and the flange 19 applied helically, more strips then being wound round the shell between adjacent turns of the flange. The outer shell is then slid over the flange, the external diameter of which slightly exceeds the internal diameter of the outer shell. Split rings 8, 9 are urged into engagement with the shells on axial movement of a wedge 12 effected by tightening a screw 15. A rubber sealing ring 17 is provided between a back-plate 16 and the split rings. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the layer 18 is formed from a plurality of inflatable rings or a continuous helically wound inflatable rubber tube (21), the flange 19 engaging in a. metal reinforced helical groove (20) in the wound tube, and in a helical groove (25) in the inner surface of the outer shell. To assemble the roller, the flange is "screwed" into the groove (25), and the deflated tube (21) is "screwed" on to the flange, the inner shell then being slid into the assembly and the tube (31) filled through a valve (27), e.g. by compressed air, water, or oil. The tube (21) may be formed of glass fibre reinforced synthetic rubber. More than one flange 19 may be provided to form more than one helical flow path. The rail may be formed of a resilient synthetic resin, e.g. polyethylene. The layer 18 may be formed of rubber. The invention is also applied to hotwater- or steam-heated rollers.
