Abstract

An electromagnetic stirrer (5) operating beneath a molten metal furnace is mounted on a chassis (8) running on rails (9) so that it can be withdrawn from beneath the furnace if the crucible (1) breaks. The withdrawal is actuated by thermocouple sensers (10) in the furnace. The stirrer may alternatively be pivotally mounted for withdrawal.
