Abstract

1,130,819. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. S. G. ANDERSSON. 13 April, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 17035/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for producing rings automatically from ribbon comprises first means for gripping the free end of a supply of ribbon, means for feeding a predetermined length of ribbon, second means for gripping the ribbon at the end of the fed length, means for severing the ribbon adjacent the second gripping means, and means for overlapping the ends of the severed length and for positioning said overlapped ends in operative relation to a machine adapted to unite said ends. Brackets la, 1b depending from a table 1, journal a main shaft 10 driven via gearing 56, a pulley 57 and a belt 58. A depending bracket 2 carries a shaft 4 which engages a shaft 5 transversely and pivotally, shaft 5 being biased to the horizontal position by a counterweight 9 thereon. Arms 6, 7 are pivoted intermediately on shaft 5, and at their upper ends are pivoted at 23, (23a) to sleeves 24 (24a) journalling shafts 25 (25a). The latter carry at one end spring clamping jaws 27, (27a), and at the other end pulleys 26, 26a. The lower ends of arms 6, 7 carry follower rollers 21a, 21b cooperating with cams 13, 12 on shaft 10. Arms 6, 7 are biased by springs 30, 30a against studs 31, 32 carried adjustably by a plate 5a rigid with shaft 5. A depending bracket 17 carries a shaft journalling forwardly-extending arms 19, 19a carrying follower rollers 21c, 21d co-operating with cams 18, 20 on shaft 10. Arms 19, 19a are connected by cables 29, 29a, guided by pulleys 61, 61a carried by arms 6, 7, to the pulleys 26, 26a. A depending bracket 3 carries a shaft journalling rearwardly-extending arms 15, 52 carrying follower rollers 21f, 21e cooperating with cams 22, 53 on shaft 10. An upstanding bracket 41 carries a shaft 34 journalling a ribbon-feed wheel 35 and a pulley 38 rigid therewith. A cable 16, extending from arm 15, is wound around pulley 38 and carries at its free end a counterweight (36). Bracket 41 also carries a fixed lower knife blade 54 and an upper blade 55 rigid with a slidable guide 46 biased upwardly by a spring 47. A shaft 48, journalled in bracket 41, carries a first arm 49 engaging guide 46 and a second arm 50 connected by a link 51 to arm 52. Ribbon from a supply is pressed against the periphery of wheel 35 by a presser wheel (45) carried by bracket 41, and then passes between the blades 54, 55. A ring of ribbon is produced at each revolution of shaft 10. Initially, cams 12, 13 position arms 6, 7 adjacent bracket 41, against the bias of springs 30, 30a, and cams 18, 20 have rotated shafts 25, (25a) against the bias of springs 28, (28a) associated therewith, whereby jaws 27, (27a) are opened by a blade 33 projecting from bracket 41, and are positioned to receive ribbon issuing from between the blades 54, 55. When shaft 10 commences to rotate, cam 22 swings arm 15 to rotate wheel 35, and cam 13 allows the nearer arm 6 to be moved forward by spring 30 into engagement with stud 31 to close jaws 27 after a predetermined length of ribbon has passed therethrough. Cam 18 then allows spring 28 to rotate shaft 25 through 180 degrees to turn the free end of the ribbon inwardly. Ribbon feeding continues until a predetermined length has passed through the farther jaws (27a), when cam 17 allows arm 7 to move forwards to locate a predetermined length of ribbon between jaws (27a) and the blades 54, 55. Blade 55 is then actuated via arm 49 and cam 50 to sever the ribbon, and cam 12 allows arm 7 to move forwards for disengaging jaws (27a) from blade 33 while cam 20 allows spring (28a) to turn shaft (25a) through 180 degrees for overlapping the free ends of the severed piece. A cam 11 on shaft 10 then cooperates with a follower roller 8 on shaft 5 to turn the latter counterclockwise about shaft 4, whereby the jaws 27 (27a) are moved to position the overlapped ends of the severed ribbon for attachment together at a suitable machine.
