Description

A beam for a chain conveyor TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a beam for a chain conveyor and to a chain conveyor.
BACKGROUND ln chain conveyors for transportation of goods two or more chains are running over two or more beams. The beams of prior art chain conveyors are for example closed rectangular beams or beams in the shape of a C.
SUMMARY An object of the present invention is to provide an improved beam for a chain conveyor. A further object ofthe present invention is to provide a more flexible chain conveyor. This is achieved by a beam and a chain conveyor according to the independent claims.
According to one aspect of the invention a beam for a chain conveyor is provided, said beam being configured for supporting a running chain of the chain conveyor along a length of the chain conveyor, wherein said beam comprises: - a middle section having a rectangular shape with a length, L1, and a width, Wl, said rectangular shape being defined by a first short side and an opposite second short side and a first long side and an opposite second long side; and - a first and a second side section both extending along the length, L1, of the middle section, whereby the first side section is connected to the first long side of the middle section and the second side section is connected to the second long side of the middle section, wherein the first and the second side sections extend from the middle section in essentially opposite directions and substantially 90° in relation to the middle section.
According to another aspect of the invention a chain conveyor comprising at least two beams as defined above is provided, wherein said beams each are supporting a running chain of the chain conveyor.
Hereby a beam for a chain conveyor is provided where a first and a second side section are extending in opposite directions and 90° from the middle section whereby the first side section can be used for attaching accessories such as legs of the chain conveyor and the second side section can be used as support for the running chain of the chain conveyor. Hereby the chain is provided on one side of the middle section of the beam and the legs or other accessories can be attached at the other side of the middle section. Hereby the chain can be separated from other parts of the chain conveyor which may be advantageous for maintenance and handling of the chain conveyor. Hereby a height or width, Wl, ofthe beam can be kept smaller than if the chain and legs where to be provided on the same side of the beam as for example is the case when a C-formed beam is used. Furthermore, the beam according to the invention can be provided passing through a driving module which may be problematic with other designs of beams. Furthermore, according to the beam design of the invention the chain is more easily accessed whereby maintenance of the chain is facilitated. Furthermore, with one or more beams according to the invention a modular system is achieved. I\/|ore than one beams according to the invention can conveniently be combined whereby any size of chain conveyor easily can be set up by the user. The first side section of the beam can be easily accessed for attaching of legs and other accessories when more than one beam are to be connected in a modular system. Hereby a user ofthe chain conveyor can conveniently set up a chain conveyor of any wanted size at his own site where the chain conveyor is to be used by combining beams according to the invention. This is more difficult in prior art designs of beams, such as closed rectangular beams or C-shaped beams. Hereby a modular chain conveyor is provided according to the invention. ln one embodiment of the invention the first and the second side sections each has a rectangular shape with a length, L2, L3, and a width, W2, W3, wherein the first side section has two opposite first side section short sides and two opposite first side section long sides and the second side section has two opposite second side section short sides and two opposite second side section long sides, whereby said first side section is connected to the middle section along one of its first side section long sides and the second side section is connected to the middle section along one of its second side section long sides. ln one embodiment of the invention at least the first side section comprises openings distributed over the length, L2, of the first side section. Hereby accessories to the chain conveyor, such as legs, can easily be attached to the first side section. ln one embodiment of the invention the second side section is configured for supporting the chain of the chain conveyor. Hereby the chain will be provided on an opposite side of the middle part of the beam compared to the where for example legs of the chain conveyor are attached to the first side section. ln one embodiment of the invention the first side section is configured for supporting one or more of: legs, accessories, driving module, chain turnplates and stabilizing bars. ln one embodiment of the invention the middle section comprises openings distributed over the length, L1, and/or the width, Wl, of the middle section, said openings being configured for supporting one or more of: legs, accessories, driving module, chain turnplates and stabilizing bars. ln one embodiment of the invention said beam comprises a first and a second outer side section which are extending along the length of the middle section, whereby the first outer side section is connected to the first side section and the second outer side section is connected to the second side section, wherein the first and second outer side sections extend from the one of the first or second side section to which it is connected in essentially opposite directions, and essentially in a plane parallel to a plane ofthe middle section. ln one embodiment of the invention the first outer side section is connected to the first side section along the one of the first side section long sides which is not connected to the middle section and the second outer side section is connected to the second side section along the one of the second side section long sides which is not connected to the middle section. ln one embodiment of the invention the chain conveyor is modular and may comprise any number of beams as defined above connected in their length direction. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF El\/lBODl\/IENTS Figure la is a perspective view of a beam l according to one embodiment of the invention. Figure lb is a side view ofthe beam l as shown in Figure la. Figure lc is a side view of a beam l' according to another embodiment of the invention. These two embodiments are similar and are described together using the same reference numbers. ln Figure 2 it is shown how the beam l as shown in Figure la is used in a chain conveyor 3l. A chain conveyor 3l comprising one or more beams l; l', suitably at least two beams l; l', according to the invention is also provided according to the invention. One chain 33 is supported by each beam l; l' in the chain conveyor 3l.
The beam l; l' according to the invention is configured for being used in a chain conveyor 3l. The beam l; l' is configured for supporting a running chain 33 ofthe chain conveyor 3l along a length of the chain conveyor. The beam l; l' comprises a middle section 3 which has a rectangular shape with a length, Ll, and a width, Wl. The middle section 3 has a first short side 3a and an opposite second short side 3b and a first long side 3c and an opposite second long side 3d which together are defining the rectangular shape of the middle section 3. The beam l; l' comprises furthermore a first and a second side section 9, ll both extending along the length, Ll, of the middle section 3, whereby the first side section 9 is connected to the first long side 3c of the middle section 3 and the second side section ll is connected to the second long side 3d ofthe middle section. Hereby the first and the second side sections 9, ll are connected one to each of the two long sides 3c, 3d of the middle section 3. The first and the second side sections 9, ll extend from the middle section 3 in essentially opposite directions and substantially 90° in relation to the middle section 3. The first and second side 4 sections 9, 11 are extending from the middle section 3 in essentially opposite directions which would mean that a difference in the direction of extension between the first and second side sections 9, 11 is essentially 180°. Smaller deviations from 180° should also be covered by this invention, such as 175-185°. Furthermore, the first and second side sections 9,11 extending substantially 90° in relation to the middle section 3 should cover smaller deviations from 90°, such as for example 85°-95°.
The first and the second side sections 9, 11 each has a rectangular shape with a length L2, L3 and a width W2, W3 wherein the first side section 9 has two opposite first side section short sides 9a, 9b and two opposite first side section long sides 9c, 9d which are defining the rectangular shape of the first side section 9 and the second side section 11 has two opposite second side section short sides 11a, 11b and two opposite second side section long sides 11c, 11d which are defining the rectangular shape of the second side section 11. The first side section 9 is connected to the middle section 3 along one of its first side section long sides 9c and the second side section 11 is connected to the middle section 3 along one of its second side section long sides 11c. The first side section 9 is connected to the first long side 3c of the middle part 3 and the second side section 11 is connected to the second long side 3d ofthe middle part 3. Hereby the first long side 3c of the middle section 3 is connected along its length to one of the first side section long sides 9c of the first side section 9 and the second long side 3d ofthe middle section 3 is connected along its length to one ofthe second side section long sides 11c of the second side section 11. The lengths L2, L3 of the first and second side sections 9, 11 can in some embodiments of the invention (as shown in Figure 1a) be the same as the length L1 ofthe middle section 3. However, in another embodiment the lengths L1, L2 and L3 ofthe middle section 3 and the first and second side sections 9, 11 need not be the same. The lengths L1, L2, L3 can be varied according to customer requirements. The width W1 of the middle section can in some embodiments be larger than the widths W2, W3 of the first and second side sections 9, 11. ln some examples the width W1 of the middle section 3 is more than 1,5 or more than 2 times larger than the width, W2, W3, of the first and/or the second side sections 9, 11.
At least the first side section 9 comprises openings 15 distributed over the length L2 and possibly also over the width W2 of the first side section 9. The middle section 3 may also comprise openings 16 distributed over the length L1 and/or the width W1 of the middle section 3. The first side section 9 is configured for supporting for example legs and accessories of the chain conveyor 31. Herbey the openings 15 are sized and distributed over the area of the first side section 9 such that legs and other accessories easily can be attached to the first side section 9. The openings 16 of the middle section 3 may also be used for connection of accessories to the beam 1;1', such as for example connection of chain turnplates, stabilizing bars and a driving module. The openings 16 are hereby sized and distributed over an area of the middle section 3 such that these accessories can be conveniently connected to the beam 1;1'.
The second side section 11 is configured for supporting the chain 33 of the chain conveyor 31. The width W3 of the second side section 11 is hereby suitably at least of the same size as a width of the chain 33. The chain 33 of a chain conveyor 31 as described in the present invention can have a width of for example 1-4 cm and therefore the width W3 of the second side section 11 can in some embodiments of the invention be between 1-10 cm. The width W2 of the first side section 9 can in some embodiments be the same as the width W3 of the second side section 11. However, the widths W2, W3 can also differ. ln some embodiments of the invention, but not necessarily, the beam 1 further comprises a first and a second outer side section 19, 21 which are extending along the length L1 of the middle section 3. Such an embodiment is shown in Figure 1a and 1b. ln Figure 1c an embodiment without outer side sections 19, 21 is shown. The outer side sections 19, 21 are not necessary for the invention but are merely provided as a protection for connected accessories and the chain of the chain conveyor. The first outer side section 19 is connected to the first side section 9 and the second outer side section 21 is connected to the second side section 11, wherein the first and second outer side sections 19, 21 extend from the one of the first or second side section 9, 11 to which it is connected in essentially opposite directions and essentially in a plane parallel to a plane of the middle section 3, whereby the outer side sections 19, 21 are folded in a direction such that they are overlapping a part of the middle section 3. The first and second outer side sections 19, 21 can for example have the same length as the first and second side sections 9, 11 and a rectangular shape. A width of the first and second outer side sections 19, 21 may be the same or smaller than the width W2, W3 of the first and second side sections 9, 11.
The first outer side section 19 is connected to the first side section 9 along the one of the first side section long sides 9d which is not connected to the middle section 3 and the second outer side section 21 is connected to the second side section 11 along the one of the second side section long sides 11d which is not connected to the middle section 3. ln Figure 2 a chain conveyor 31 according to the invention is shown. The chain conveyor 31 comprises suitably at least two beams 1; 1' as described above and shown in Figures 1a-1c (the beam 1 as shown in Figures 1a and 1b is shown in Figure 2 but it could as well be the beam 1' as shown in Figure 1c). The beams 1;1' are each supporting a running chain 33 ofthe chain conveyor 31. Legs 35 are shown connected to the openings 15 of the first side section 9. Chain turnplates 37 are shown connected to the openings 16 in the middle section 3. Stabilizing bars 39, a driving unit 41 and chain guides 42 are also shown connected to openings 16 in the middle section 3.
The beams 1; 1' according to the invention can conveniently be combined in their length direction in order to provide a modular system. Hereby any size of a chain conveyor can be provided by combining any wanted number of beams 1; 1' after each other in their length direction. This combination is easily performed thanks to the easy access to the first side section 9 ofthe beams 1; 1' where legs and other accessories can be attached. Hereby beams 1; 1' can be produced in predefined sizes and the customer can combine them according to his own needs. Herbey there is less need for customer specific adaptations of the beams as may be the case with previous beam designs.
