Abstract

Combustion plants burning fuels that contain sulphur must clean the flue gases from sulphur oxides for environmental reasons. This can be done by leading the flue gases through a limestone bed where calcium carbonate is transformed to calcium sulphate (gypsum). According to the invention, a portion of the limestone bed (17) is fed out, cleaned in two steps and reused. In a first cleaning step, powdery material is separated in a sieve (42) and in a second step the surface of the limestone is worn off in a tumbler (43) with water addition. The cleaned limestone and the powdery material from the second step is introduced again to the bed. The powdery material worn off in the tumbler consists mainly of limestone and gypsumg.
