The invention relates to a method for producing 5-bromicotinic acid - the intermediate product of the synthesis of a number of chemical compounds and medicinal substances. The method consists in bromination of nicotinic acid in an environment of thionyl chloride with an equimolar amount of bromine at elevated temperature and differs from the known methods by the use of catalytic amounts of Lewis acids. This allows you to increase the yield and quality of the target product, to reduce the amount of thionyl chloride and the reaction temperature, to halve the bromination process.
