A multimonopolar cell for producing aluminum by electrolysis of alumina dissolved in an electrolyte from liquid salt has an electrode assembly. Each such assembly has a non-corroding anode and cathode that resist electrolyte and related electrolysis products. The anode usually has a shape with an inner active surface. The cathode is made of one or more rods or tubes that are located in the middle of the tubular anode or between the anode plates, the cathode protruding from the bottom of the anode. The active surface of the anode is larger than the opposing active surface of the cathode. When the cell operates, the electrode assembly is vertically or inclined partially immersed in the electrolyte, the cathode being lowered into the aluminum layer at the bottom of the cell. Liquid aluminum released on the surface of the cathode during electrolysis drips or flows to the bottom of the cell, and oxygen released on the surface of the anode rises through the electrolyte and is discharged through the upper part of the tubular anode. The current supply to the cathode rods is mainly carried out through the bottom of the element and a layer of aluminum.
