Abstract
Description
Technical field
The present invention relates to integrated polymeric materials and their use as a component of supercapacitors.
State of the art
Conventional capacitors serve as a means of storing electricity. Typically, conventional capacitors consist of a pair of electrically conductive plates (which thus act as a pair of electrodes) separated by a dielectric material. A dielectric material usually has low conductivity, but can be polarized by an electric field. Thus, when the electrodes experience a potential difference, an electric field is created in the dielectric material, allowing electrical energy to be stored. However, the maximum capacitance values achieved by conventional capacitors are such that the electrical storage capacity is usually lower than that of electrochemical batteries.
Meanwhile, supercapacitors achieve significantly higher capacitance values compared to conventional capacitors and thus offer increased energy storage capacity. Supercapacitors usually consist of two electrodes and an electrolyte located between them. The electrolyte component typically has ionic conductivity (which therefore contrasts with the nature of the dielectric component of conventional capacitors, which, as mentioned, typically has low conductivity). In a supercapacitor, electrical energy is stored primarily through two principles: electrostatic capacitance (due to the charge distribution in the electrolyte component) and electrochemical capacitance (due to electrical energy from the reversible redox (redox) reaction between the electrolyte and the electrodes); in a supercapacitor, energy can be stored through one or both of these two principles. There are several different types of supercapacitor systems, including double-layer supercapacitors, pseudocapacitive supercapacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors. Double-layer supercapacitors usually contain carbon electrodes, which have a relatively low cost. The capacity of double-layer supercapacitors is largely determined by electrostatic capacitance. Meanwhile, pseudocapacitive supercapacitors contain relatively more expensive electrodes that are capable of undergoing a redox reaction along with the electrolyte. Such redox electrodes may contain, for example, ruthenium or vanadium. Thus, the capacitance of pseudocapacitive supercapacitors is increased (or increased) by electrochemical capacitance. Hybrid supercapacitors contain a combination of electrodes with different characteristics and may, for example, contain one carbon electrode and one electrode capable of undergoing a redox reaction with the electrolyte. Thus, the capacitance of hybrid supercapacitors is a combination of electrostatic capacitance and electrochemical capacitance.
It is desirable to increase the capacitance (and therefore the energy storage capacity) of the supercapacitor. The maximum capacitance value achieved by a supercapacitor may depend on the nature of the electrolyte and the nature of the electrodes. For example, technologies exist to increase the effective surface area of each electrode plate, which directly increases the capacitance, and this represents the most recent improvement in supercapacitor performance. The development of electrodes having a very large effective area has been achieved, for example, by developing nanostructures grown or deposited on the surface of the electrode - such "surface-enlarged" electrodes therefore have increased surface area compared to smooth electrodes. Typical examples are shown in Fig. 1, consisting of regular arrays of nanorods, or in FIG. 2, consisting of irregular structures based on carbon microparticles. However, there are various disadvantages associated with electrodes with an increased surface area. For example, there are problems in producing electrodes with increased surface area compared to simple "smooth surface" electrodes, as well as in combining them with an electrolyte. Additionally, to realize the full potential of the additional area provided by increased surface electrodes, only an electrolyte that is capable of penetrating the nano/micro structure of the increased electrode surface can be used. This limits the use of conventional supercapacitor electrolytes, that is, those that are liquid, and although gelled electrolytes can be used, their properties must be such that they do not exhibit a yield stress that would prevent penetration into the enlarged electrode surface. Thus, this eliminates the use of more advanced electrolyte component options when using electrodes with an increased surface area. For example, WO 2017/153705, WO 2017/153706 and WO 2017/115064 describe the preparation of electrically conductive cross-linked hydrophilic polymers that can be used instead of a conventional liquid electrolyte in a supercapacitor. These materials have good electrical properties but, being hard, are not suitable for penetrating the nano/micro structure of the enlarged electrode surface and therefore cannot realize the full potential of such enlarged surfaces.
Thus, there remains a need for improved capacity enhancement technologies.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
This document proposes a new and amazing means of increasing capacity. This is achieved through a new "integrated" polymer structure provided by the introduction of electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles into the surface layer of the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer. This "integrated" polymer, when included as an electrolytic component of a supercapacitor, allows for increased capacitance, thereby improving energy storage capacity. Without being limited by theory, it is believed that when the introduced polymer contacts the electrode surface, increased effective surface area at the electrolyte/electrode interface is provided by the nanoparticle-shaped electrically conductive material integrated into the surface layer of the polymer. This increase in effective surface area is achieved without the need for an electrode with an increased surface area, allowing the use of simple electrodes with a smooth surface.
In a first aspect, there is provided a method of introducing an electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles into a surface layer of an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer, comprising the steps of:
погружение электропроводящего сшитого полимера в первую среду, иimmersing the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in the first medium, and
последующее погружение электропроводящего сшитого полимера во вторую среду; гдеsubsequent immersion of the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in a second medium; Where
первая среда содержит электропроводящий материал в форме наночастиц, диспергированных в неводной полярной жидкости, иthe first medium contains an electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles dispersed in a non-aqueous polar liquid, and
вторая среда содержит водную жидкость.the second medium contains an aqueous liquid.
The method according to the first aspect is a surprisingly effective method for producing an integrated polymer. Without being limited by theory, it is believed that immersion in the first medium causes the polymer lattice to expand, allowing electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form to penetrate the surface layer of the polymer structure. The subsequent stage of immersion in a second medium then compresses the polymer lattice, thereby trapping material in the form of nanoparticles in the surface layer of the polymer. The nanoparticle material is integrated into the surface layer so that it does not leach/wear off, which is an improvement over simply “dip-coating” the polymer into the particulate material.
In a second aspect, a method for producing a supercapacitor is provided, comprising the steps of:
введение электропроводящего материала в форме наночастиц в поверхностный слой электропроводящего сшитого полимера с использованием способа первого аспекта; иintroducing an electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles into a surface layer of an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer using the method of the first aspect; And
размещение полимера между двумя электродами.placing the polymer between two electrodes.
A third aspect provides an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer comprising an electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form integrated into a surface layer. This polymer can be produced by the method according to the first aspect.
In a fourth aspect, a polymer is used in the supercapacitor in accordance with the third aspect.
A fifth aspect provides a supercapacitor comprising two electrodes and a polymer according to the third aspect disposed between them.

The term "hydrophobic monomer" also has its usual definition in the art and thus refers to a monomer that repels water molecules.
As used herein, the term “crosslinker” refers to a molecular compound capable of forming chemical bonds between polymer chains. A polymer that includes such chemical bonds between its chains is called a "cross-linked" polymer.
The electrically conductive crosslinked polymer used in the method disclosed herein need not be limited to a particular shape, but typically the polymer includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and a number of wall-like sides (typically four). Typically the polymer approaches a nearly three-dimensional flat shape. Typically, the polymer thickness (ie the distance between the top and bottom surface) is in the range of 250 µm to 2 mm. Disclosed herein, an electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form is integrated into a surface layer of an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer. This allows the integrated material in nanoparticle form to form part of the electrolyte/electrode interface when the integrated polymer is sandwiched between two electrodes and used as an electrolyte component in a supercapacitor. The term "surface layer" refers to the outermost region of the polymer, typically the outermost region having a thickness of 80-120 microns, preferably 90-110 microns. The nanoparticle material disclosed herein may be integrated into a top surface layer (ie, the outermost top layer) and/or a bottom surface layer (ie, the outermost bottom layer) of a polymer. Preferably, the nanoparticle material is integrated into both the top surface layer and the bottom surface layer. It should be understood that typically the material in the form of nanoparticles is introduced exclusively into the surface layer of the polymer and is not incorporated into the entire polymer. This results in a polymer in which the nanoparticle material is incorporated into the surface layer and the remaining regions of the polymer are substantially free of nanoparticle material.
As used herein, the term “nanoparticle material” refers to a material present in the form of a plurality of particles with sizes small enough to fall in the nm range (rather than the µm range) and thus have dimensions less than 1000 nm, more specifically, sizes 1-1000 nm. Preferably, the nanoparticle material is provided as a plurality of particles with sizes less than 800 nm, more preferably less than 600 nm. The nanoparticle material may be a plurality of particles with sizes greater than 1 nm, greater than 10 nm, or greater than 50 nm. A qualified person will be familiar with the techniques required to measure the appropriate particle sizes of a material in the form of nanoparticles, for example through image analysis in which the particles pass through a capillary tube and are scanned by an image analyzer to measure the appropriate sizes, a suitable device is the Sysmex FPIA-3000 Flow Image Analyzer particles
The shape of a nanoparticle material can be determined by measuring the aspect ratio, where the aspect ratio is defined as the largest dimension divided by the smallest orthogonal dimension (which for tubular particles is therefore equal to the length divided by the diameter). The higher the aspect ratio, the greater the elongation of the particle; the lower the aspect ratio, the more spherical the particle. It is believed that by selecting the aspect ratio, material in the form of nanoparticles is especially effectively absorbed into the polymer lattice. The nanoparticle material may consist of particles with an aspect ratio of less than 100:1, preferably less than 50:1, more preferably less than 10:1. The nanoparticle material may consist of particles with an aspect ratio of at least 2:1, preferably at least 3:1. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the nanoparticle material consists of particles with an aspect ratio of from 3:1 to 10:1. With regard to aspect ratio measurement, one skilled in the art (as above) will be familiar with how to measure the appropriate dimensions of a nanoparticle-shaped material, for example through image analysis in which the particles are passed through a capillary tube and scanned with an image analyzer to measure appropriate particle sizes, a suitable device is the Sysmex FPIA-3000 Flow Particle Image Analyzer . This method measures the largest dimension and the smallest orthogonal dimension, which are then used to calculate the aspect ratio.
Malvern-Panalytical «Zetasizer».The nanoparticle material may be a plurality of particles having a mass average diameter of less than 1000 nm, preferably less than 800 nm, more preferably less than 600 nm. The nanoparticle material may be a plurality of particles having a mass average diameter greater than 1 nm, greater than 10 nm, or greater than 50 nm. A qualified person will be familiar with how to measure mass average diameter, for example by laser diffraction using the Malvern-Panalytical "Zetasizer".
MoS2. The electrically conductive nature of the nanoparticle material is such that when the integrated polymer is used as the electrolyte component of a supercapacitor and is in contact with the electrode surface, an increased effective surface area is provided at the electrolyte/electrode interface. Thus, the nanoparticle material can be any suitable electrically conductive material, especially those materials otherwise used to form electrode components—one skilled in the art will be familiar with such materials. For example, the electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form may be electrically conductive carbon, a transition metal oxide, or combinations thereof. Such materials are otherwise used to form electrodes, and therefore such materials are particularly effective in forming the enhanced electrolyte/electrode interface provided by the integrated polymer described herein. The term "transition metal oxide" refers to an oxide of a metal that is present in the d-block (i.e. group 3 to group 12) of the periodic table. The transition metal oxide can be MnO, MnO 2 , NaMnO 2 ; ZnO2 ; Fe 2 O 3 ; MoS 2 , V 2 O 5 , RuO 2 , IrO 2 or combinations thereof. Preferably, the transition metal oxide is MnO 2 , MnO, ZnO 2 , NaMnO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 or MoS 2 .
Preferably, the electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form is electrically conductive carbon. One skilled in the art will be familiar with electrically conductive forms of carbon. In FIG. 4 shows a photograph of an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer both before (right) and after (left) it has undergone integration of electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles into its surface layer. It can be seen that the polymer becomes "opaque" due to the integrated nanoparticles, which in the example in FIG. 4 were in the form of electrically conductive carbon.
The electrically conductive crosslinked polymer may be electronically conductive and/or ionic. Preferably, the electrically conductive crosslinked polymer is electrically conductive.
WO 2017/115064.An electrically conductive cross-linked polymer is typically produced by polymerizing a polymerization mixture. As used herein, the term “polymerization mixture” refers to a solution or dispersion of polymer-forming components. From the above definitions it will be clear that the terms “hydrophobic monomer” and “cross-linking agent” are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The hydrophobic monomer and crosslinker disclosed herein may be the same or different. In some embodiments, the hydrophobic monomer may be the same as the crosslinking agent. For example, in some embodiments, both the crosslinking agent and the hydrophobic monomer are allyl methacrylate. In other embodiments, the hydrophobic monomer is not cross-linked, and in such embodiments, the cross-linking agent and the hydrophobic monomer are different chemical compounds. Preferably, the hydrophobic monomer is a chemical compound other than a cross-linking agent. Generally, the hydrophilic monomer is a chemical compound different from the cross-linking agent and the hydrophobic monomer.
More preferably, the polymerization step is carried out by UV or gamma radiation. One skilled in the art will appreciate that UV or gamma irradiation can be carried out at ambient temperature and pressure, while thermal polymerization can be carried out at temperatures up to 70°C.
In a preferred embodiment, the polymerization mixture further includes a polymerization initiator. The polymerization initiator can be azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) or 2-hydroxy-2-methylpriophenone. The presence of a polymerization initiator is particularly advantageous when the polymerization is carried out under the influence of thermal or UV radiation. In one embodiment, the polymerization is carried out by thermal means and the initiator is azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). In another embodiment, the polymerization is carried out under the influence of UV radiation, and the initiator is 2-hydroxy-2-methylpriophenone.
In one embodiment, the electrically conductive crosslinked polymer is formed by polymerizing a polymerization mixture, wherein the polymerization mixture includes at least one hydrophobic monomer, at least one hydrophilic monomer, at least one electrically conductive polymer, and at least one crosslinking agent. The resulting polymer exhibits electronic conductivity. The resulting polymer has particularly good water properties, excellent mechanical properties, excellent electrical conductivity and provides particularly high capacitance values.
Более предпочтительно, чтобы электронно активный по своей природе материал представлял собой полиэтилендиокситиофен : сульфонат полистирола (ПЭДОТ:СПС).Preferably, the at least one electrically conductive polymer is selected from polyethylenedioxythiophene: polystyrene sulfonate, polypyrrole, polyaniline, polyacetylene, or a combination thereof. More preferably, the inherently electronically active material is polyethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:SPS).
In one embodiment, the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer is formed by polymerizing a polymerization mixture, wherein the polymerization mixture contains at least one hydrophobic monomer, at least one hydrophilic monomer, at least one amino acid, and at least one cross-linking agent. The resulting polymer exhibits electronic conductivity, which is believed to be due to the conjugation of electrons in the aromatic system/delocalized lone pairs of electrons in the amino acid, favorably altering the electronic properties of the polymer material. As used herein, the term “amino acid” has its usual definition in the art and thus refers to an organic compound with amino and carboxylic acid functional groups and a side chain specific to each amino acid. The term covers traditional "natural" amino acids, but also any compound with an amino acid backbone (ie any side chain). Preferably, the amino acid (preferably a naturally occurring amino acid) contains an aromatic group on its side chain.
In one embodiment, the at least one amino acid is selected from phenylalanine, tryptophan, histidine, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and tyrosine, or a combination thereof. Preferably, at least one amino acid is selected from phenylalanine, tryptophan, histidine and tyrosine or a combination thereof. Even more preferably, at least one amino acid is selected from phenylalanine and tryptophan or a combination thereof.
The method described herein includes the step of immersing an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in a first medium followed by immersing the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in a second medium. The polymer is immersed in each medium such that at least one of the upper or lower surface of the polymer is immersed in and exposed to each medium, but preferably so that both the upper surface and the lower surface are immersed in and exposed to each medium. every environment. Therefore, as one skilled in the art will appreciate, the term "immersion" can refer to partial or complete immersion of the polymer in each respective medium, but preferably refers to complete immersion of the polymer in each medium.
It is believed that immersion in the first medium expands the polymer lattice, allowing electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles to penetrate the surface layer of the polymer. Preferably, the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer is immersed in the first medium for a period of at least 30 seconds, more preferably at least 2 minutes, more preferably at least 15 minutes, more preferably at least 30 minutes. Immersion for such periods of time allows for good absorption of the electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles.
In the method described herein, after the step of immersing the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in the first medium, the polymer is removed from the first medium and then immersed in the second medium, thereby obtaining a polymer that has an electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles integrated into the surface layer. It is believed that after expanding the polymer lattice by immersion in the first medium, immersion in the second medium then compresses the polymer lattice, thereby trapping the electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles in the surface layer (or surface layers) of the polymer. The period of immersion in the second medium can be adjusted depending on the thickness of the polymer after immersion in the first medium. Preferably, the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer is immersed in the second medium for a period of at least 1 minute, more preferably at least 10 minutes, more preferably at least 1 hour, more preferably at least 2 hours per mm of polymer thickness. After immersion in the second medium, the polymer can be removed from the second medium.
In the present description, the first medium and the second medium are liquids. The term "liquid" has its usual definition in the art and will be readily understood by one skilled in the art, and thus refers to a substance that exists in liquid form at ambient temperature and pressure (i.e. 30°C and pressure 1 bar).
A first medium disclosed herein comprises an electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form dispersed in a non-aqueous polar liquid. Preferably, the amount of electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles present in the first medium is in the range of 2-30 wt.%, more preferably 2-10 wt.%, based on the total weight of the first medium.
The term "non-aqueous" when used with respect to a polar liquid means that the polar liquid is substantially free of water, more specifically that the polar liquid contains less than 10% by weight water, preferably less than 5% by weight water, more preferably less 1 wt.% water or less than 0.5 wt.% water based on the total weight of the polar liquid. Polar liquid may contain 0.1% or even 0% water.
CRC, Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (92-е издание, 2011-2012 г., глава «Лабораторные растворители и другие жидкие реагенты»). 20.As used herein, the term “polar”, when used in reference to a polar liquid of a first medium, refers to a liquid whose molecular constituents have a dipole moment due to an asymmetric distribution of electronic charge. One skilled in the art must understand what substances make up a non-aqueous polar liquid. One such measure of polarity is dielectric constant. Dielectric constant can be measured using the method described in CRC, Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (92nd edition, 2011-2012, chapter "Laboratory Solvents and Other Liquid Reagents"). A higher dielectric constant indicates greater polarity (which can also be called a larger dipole moment). Preferably, the non-aqueous polar liquid has a dielectric constant of at least 10, more preferably at least 15, more preferably at least 20.
Preferably, the non-aqueous polar liquid of the first medium is an alcohol. More preferably, the non-aqueous polar liquid of the first medium is methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, or mixtures thereof. Most preferably, the non-aqueous polar liquid of the first medium is ethanol. It is believed that immersion in ethanol results in a particularly efficient expansion of the polymer, thereby allowing for particularly efficient absorption of the material in nanoparticle form.
As disclosed herein, following the step of immersing the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in a first medium, there is a step of immersing the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer in a second medium. The second medium includes an aqueous liquid. Preferably, the second medium consists of an aqueous liquid. The term “aqueous,” when used in relation to a second medium liquid, refers to a liquid that contains a significant proportion of water, for example, more than 50 wt.% water, preferably more than 75 wt.% water, more preferably more than 85 wt.%. water in terms of the total mass of liquid.
3 H2SO4. More preferably, the second medium is an aqueous acid solution. When saline solution is used, the saline solution preferably contains 0.002 g/cm 3 to 0.1 g/cm 3 NaCl in water, more preferably 0.009 g/cm 3 NaCl in water. Preferably, the method described herein further includes the step of hydrating the electrically conductive crosslinked polymer prior to the step of immersing the electrically conductive crosslinked polymer in the first medium. This initial hydration step is believed to provide the initial expansion of the polymer, which facilitates the eventual uptake of nanoparticle material upon immersion in the first medium.
Когда используют раствор щелочи, раствор щелочи предпочтительно представляет собой водный раствор КОН, причем КОН присутствует в количестве от 10 до 30 мас.%.This hydration step is preferably carried out by immersion in a hydration medium which is an aqueous liquid. When saline solution is used, the saline solution preferably contains 0.002 g/cm 3 to 0.1 g/cm 3 NaCl in water, more preferably 0.009 g/cm 3 NaCl in water. When a concentrated solution is used, it preferably contains 0.3 g/cm 3 NaCl in water. When an acid solution is used, the acid is preferably 5 mol/dm 3 H 2 SO 4 . When an alkali solution is used, the alkali solution is preferably an aqueous KOH solution, the KOH being present in an amount of 10 to 30% by weight.
Preferably, the polymer is not immersed in the first medium, second medium or hydration medium so that hydraulic equilibrium is achieved since preferably only one or more surface layers are exposed to liquid penetration rather than the bulk of the polymer. However, the nature of the first medium is preferably such that if the polymer were immersed such that hydraulic equilibrium was achieved, the polymer would expand by at least 10%, preferably by at least 50%, in any linear dimension. Likewise, the nature of the hydration environment in the (optional) initial stage of hydration is such that if the polymer is to be hydrated such that hydraulic equilibrium is achieved, the coefficient of linear expansion (as the ratio of the width of the hydrated polymer to the width of the dry non-hydrated polymer) must be at least 1. 2:1, more preferably at least 1.4:1, most preferably at least 1.6:1, and the amount of water in the polymer will be at least 40 wt.%, preferably at least 50 wt.%, more preferably at least 60% by weight of the total weight of the hydrated polymer if hydraulic equilibrium is to be achieved.
Disclosed herein is an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer comprising electrically conductive material in nanoparticle form integrated into its surface layer, produced by a process described herein. Preferred characteristics such as nanoparticle material, amounts, polymerization mixtures and polymerization conditions are disclosed above.
Also provided herein is a method for producing a supercapacitor, comprising the steps of introducing an electrically conductive material in the form of nanoparticles into a surface layer of an electrically conductive cross-linked polymer using the method described herein and placing the resulting integrated polymer between two electrodes. The polymer is typically removed from the second environment before use in the supercapacitor. The present document proposes the use of an integrated polymer in a supercapacitor and a supercapacitor comprising two electrodes and an integrated polymer located between them. By positioning/placing the integrated polymer between two electrodes so that the polymer is in contact with the electrodes, a polymer/electrode interface is formed which acts as an effective increased surface area at the polymer/electrode interface. This provides increased capacitance without the use of electrodes with increased surface area and thus allows higher capacitance to be achieved using simple smooth surface electrodes.
3.Although the integrated polymers described herein are not required to be used with non-smooth electrode surfaces, they are compatible with non-smooth surfaces. The effective surface area can be further increased by casting the electrically conductive cross-linked polymer onto the surface of a suitable shape that acts as a mold during its formation, using the method described herein, and then fitting the integrated polymer with a machined electrode of the same profile. This is shown schematically in Fig. 3.

The hydrated polymer was then immersed in a dispersion of undrawn carbon nanoparticles in ethanol and then immersed in an aqueous solution of H 2 SO 4 .
The result was a polymer membrane in which carbon nanoparticles were captured, that is, integrated into its surface layer. The polymer membrane was washed with water and only very small traces of carbon particles were removed, leading to the conclusion that the integrated nanoparticle material was not easily removed by washing or "rubbing" the surface.

30%.The ratio of capacity per unit area of integrated polymer to "as received" polymer was found to be 1.25-1.3:1. This means an increase in integrated polymer capacity of 25 and 30%.
