Abstract
Description
Field of technology.
The invention relates to the nuclear industry, in particular to the technology of manufacturing ceramic nuclear fuel for fuel elements (fuel rods) of nuclear power plants.
The creation of promising nuclear fuel with an extended cycle requires the use of uranium-gadolinium pellets with a high content of burnable absorber (8.00 wt.% or more). The use of gadolinium in the fuel makes it possible to level the energy release fields throughout the core and compensate for the reactivity margin during the campaign. High demands are placed on such fuel.
The properties of the fuel are mainly formed during the sintering operation, which consists of three main stages: preheating, high-temperature holding and cooling. One of the main objectives of the sintering process is to achieve a given level of required properties, which in the case of fuel with a high content of gadolinium oxide (8.00 wt.% or more) are density, porosity, thermal stability (sinterability), grain size, hydrogen content, etc. Temperature, isothermal holding time, and the oxygen potential of the sintering atmosphere have a strong influence on these properties. An increase in the dew point and, accordingly, an increase in the oxygen content in the sintering atmosphere contributes to an increase in the diffusion of uranium and gadolinium ions, which is necessary for the formation of a UO 2 -Gd 2 O 3 solid solution. This, in turn, influences the obtaining of stable positive results in terms of “pre-baking” and reducing the hydrogen content in the tablets. The oxygen contained in CO 2 is highly active. And due to the low solubility of CO 2 in the UO 2 -Gd 2 O 3 crystal lattice, closed pores are filled with CO 2 and not hydrogen, which reduces the likelihood of hydride corrosion of fuel element cladding and, as a result, depressurization.
By “furnaceability” we mean a change in the geometric dimensions and/or density of the tablets upon repeated thermal exposure outside the reactor. Using the results of testing tablets for “additional baking”, it is possible to predict the compaction and shrinkage of tablets when operating in a reactor in a stationary mode, and depending on the magnitude of changes in the density and size of the tablets (diameter) during “additional baking”, models of intra-reactor changes under irradiation in the density and size of tablets have been developed .
Practice has shown that additional compaction can occur at different rates depending on the properties of the fuel and irradiation conditions. Therefore, stabilization of additional compaction (“pre-sintering”) and other properties makes it possible to reduce possible risks and guarantee long-term performance of the fuel in the reactor.
State of the art
10.08.2010).There is a known method for producing nuclear fuel pellets, which includes preparing press powder, pressing, sintering and grinding. At the stage of preparation of uranium oxide-oxide, both defective sintered tablets and grinding dust, and UO 2 powder with a content of U 235 , U 236 and other uranium isotopes in tablets that differ from that required by the technical documentation are used as raw materials, and at the stage of preparation of pressed powder, the resulting uranium oxide-oxide is added to the charge in an amount of up to 20 wt. %, and achieving the content of U 235 , U 236 and other uranium isotopes in tablets required by technical documentation is achieved by varying the amount of additives to the oxide charge, both separately and in mixtures with UO 2 powder, depending on the content of U 235 , U in them 236 and other isotopes of uranium (RU 2396611, pub. 08/10/2010).
The disadvantage of this method is the high temperature (1750°C), the duration of sintering (~ 30 hours), and the humidification of the sintering medium not at all stages of sintering (8000-12000 ppm), resulting in a large scatter in the results of “pre-sintering”. At the same time, the resulting density of the tablets is quite low (≤10.15 g/cm 3 ), and the hydrogen content is not given at all. Also, a significant disadvantage of this invention, at present, is the limited use of gadolinium oxide to 7.0 wt. %. This is due to the fact that the development of nuclear fuel is aimed at increasing the burnup depth and the duration of the irradiation cycle between overloads. Ways to achieve these goals are achieved, among other things, by increasing the content of burnable absorbent in the fuel.
30.10.1986).There is a known method from the company "ASEA-Atom" for the production of uranium-gadolinium fuel, in which sintering of pellets is carried out in a tunnel-type furnace under conditions of controlled partial pressure of oxygen. Sintering is carried out in an atmosphere of a mixture of CO 2 +H 2 or CO + CO 2 /H 2 (the partial pressure of oxygen at 1973 K was 0.25×10 -6 Pa). In this case, tablets are obtained having a density of 10.16 g/cm 3 (DE 3609663, publ. 10.30.1986).
The disadvantage of this method is the production of low density (<10.20 g/cm 3 ) uranium-gadolinium tablets. The use of such low-density fuel contributes to the problem of cladding hydrogenation due to residual moisture.
02.07.2021).The closest to the proposed method is a method for producing uranium-gadolinium nuclear fuel, which includes preparing the initial uranium dioxide powder, mixing it with uranium oxide powder and gadolinium oxide, granulating the mixture of powders, mixing the granulate with a solid lubricant for pressing, pressing and sintering to obtain tablets, grinding the resulting tablets. 1.2 wt. is gradually added to the powder mixture. % of the blowing agent in the form of azodicarbonamide, while part of the blowing agent is added at the granulation stage, and the remaining part of the blowing agent is added at the stage of mixing the granulate with a solid lubricant for pressing, which is aluminum stearate (RU 2750780, pub. 07/02/2021).
The disadvantage of the prototype method is the additional operation of introducing a blowing agent to stabilize the “pre-sintering”, as well as maintaining the dew point not at all stages of the sintering operation, which can lead to an increased hydrogen content in the tablets and the formation of small cracks due to a lack of oxygen during sintering.
Disclosure of the Invention
The objective of the present invention is to provide optimal performance and stable characteristics of uranium-gadolinium fuel pellets (density, sinterability, grain size, hydrogen content).
The technical result of the invention is to reduce the hydrogen content in uranium-gadolinium fuel pellets, as well as to stabilize the density and “pre-sintering”, which contributes to the safe operation of the fuel in the reactor.

Операцию шлифования проводили на бесцентровом шлифовальном станке («сухой» способ).15% uranium oxide, 8.0% gadolinium oxide and alloying additives were added to the original UO 2 powder and mechanically processed in a vibrating mill. 0.2% solid lubricant and 0.1% blowing agent were added to the resulting mixture and mixed in a three-axis mixer. The press powder was pressed on a rotary press and sintering was carried out at a temperature of 1680 °C for 5.5 hours in an argon-hydrogen environment (6.0% H 2 ). The level of humidification of the sintering atmosphere at the preheating stage was ≈8650 ppm, at the high-temperature holding stage ≈8600 ppm, and CO 2 was not supplied at the cooling stage. Maintaining the required dew point is achieved by adding carbon dioxide. The grinding operation was carried out on a centerless grinding machine (“dry” method).
Option 4 (for comparison):
Операцию шлифования проводили на бесцентровом шлифовальном станке («сухой» способ).15% uranium oxide, 8.0% gadolinium oxide and alloying additives were added to the original UO 2 powder and mechanically processed in a vibrating mill. 0.2% solid lubricant and 0.1% blowing agent were added to the resulting mixture and mixed in a three-axis mixer. The press powder was pressed on a rotary press and sintering was carried out at a temperature of 1680°C for 8 hours in a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen and nitrogen (≈25% N 2 ). Gases are saturated with water vapor. The level of humidification of the sintering atmosphere at the preheating stage was ≈21000 ppm, at the high-temperature holding stage ≈25000 ppm, and no humidification was performed at the cooling stage. The grinding operation was carried out on a centerless grinding machine (“dry” method).
1.The qualitative characteristics of uranium-gadolinium tablets for each manufacturing option are given in Table 1.
2.In Table 1, option 1 should be compared with option 3 (sintering atmosphere Ar/6% H 2 ), and option 2 with option 4 (sintering atmosphere H 2 /25% N 2 ). According to the presented results, it is clear that the level of moisture at all stages of sintering plays an important role in stabilizing the properties of ceramic fuel. At a high level of humidification at all stages of sintering, including with additional input of oxygen in the form of CO 2 during cooling (options 1, 2), the density and “pre-sintering” values stabilize, and the level of hydrogen content decreases compared to options 3 , 4, where no CO 2 was supplied during the cooling stage.
Thus, the proposed method for producing uranium-gadolinium fuel makes it possible to reduce the hydrogen content in sintered pellets, and also helps to stabilize the density and “pre-sintering” of fuel pellets.
The practical use of the proposed technology for manufacturing uranium-gadolinium fuel has made it possible to increase the reliability of fuel rods with fuel containing a burnable absorber in the form of an additive of gadolinium oxide in an amount of ≥8.0 wt. %, and also made it possible to reduce the level of fuel damage.
