Abstract
Description
Field of technology
The invention relates to the field of non-ferrous metallurgy, namely to the electrolytic production of aluminum, and can be used to protect the surface of baked carbon anode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers to reduce non-technological losses associated with high-temperature oxidation.
State of the art
One of the main tasks of the modern aluminum industry is to increase electrolysis productivity while reducing resource costs for metal production. In particular, reducing the consumption of carbon anode blocks would reduce the costs associated with their replacement, as well as reduce the cost of commercial aluminum.
At high temperatures, the interaction of the carbon material of the anode with atmospheric oxygen, which penetrates into the reaction area, as well as with carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) - one of the products of electrolysis, leads to oxidation and mechanical destruction (shedding) of the carbon material. Low-tech losses of anode material amount to up to 35 kg/t of aluminum. Once in the electrolyte, the crumbled particles form “foam,” which leads to the formation of so-called “spikes” or “cones,” which negatively affects the electrolysis process and requires additional labor to remove. The short production cycle of baked anodes, when compared with other structural elements, is 25-28 days, which significantly affects the productivity of the electrolysis cell. Frequent replacement of anodes brings economic losses (costs of raw materials, manufacturing, firing, replacement of used blocks and installation of new ones).
Current inventions aimed at creating an anode material with increased resistance to oxidative degradation can be divided into two main groups: alloying the anode mass and applying protective coatings to the anode surface.
Separately, we can also highlight technologies for producing surface protective layers formed directly during the electrolysis process, which are being developed for metal anodes (US6248227 “Slowly consumable non-carbon metal-based anodes for aluminum electrolyzers”, published 06/19/2001; CA 2339095 “Anodes based on a nickel-alloy iron for aluminum electrolyzers", published 02/10/2000; US 6258247 "Bath for the electrolytic reduction of aluminum oxide and a method for its manufacture", published 07/10/2001; US6419813 "Cathode connector for a low-temperature aluminum smelting cell", published 07/16/2002). In this case, the protective layer at the anode material/electrolyte interface is formed during the electrolysis process and represents an electrochemically active surface, the protective properties of which are realized due to the formation of oxides and oxyfluorides of metals that are part of the anode material. The rate of oxidation of such a material is equal to the rate of dissolution of the surface layer in the electrolyte, which is controlled by the thickness and permeability of the surface layer. The formed surface layer limits the diffusion of oxygen to the base material.
However, anode materials based on metals and alloys have not yet found widespread industrial use for the following reasons: non-compliance with strict requirements for the purity of the resulting aluminum, short service life, as well as the technological and economic infeasibility of completely replacing carbon materials with anodes made of a new type of material.
29.05.2018.However, the creation of low-melting (650-750°C) compositions based on metal oxyfluorides (sodium, calcium, aluminum and others) to protect the surface of carbon anodes from burnout is the most acceptable technological solution. Examples of such compositions applied in the form of suspensions or impregnating pastes to the surface of carbon anodes are given in the sources: CN 103642284 A “High-temperature anti-oxidation coating for high-temperature graphite electrode”, published 03/19/2014; CN 101386995 A “Protective anti-oxidation coating of a carbon anode for aluminum electrolysis and method of its application”, published 08/25/2010; CN 1584125 A “Oxidation protection of carbon anodes for aluminum electrolysis, deep anti-oxidation layer and method of its application”, published 10/18/2006; CN 101250723 A “Oxidation-resistant anode layer of carbon-containing material for the electrolysis of aluminum, method of its preparation and coating method”, published 01/13/2010; CN 201510442632.8 A “Variety of paint for oxidation protection of carbon anodes for aluminum electrolysis”, published 05/29/2018.
For example, in CN 103642284 A “High-temperature anti-oxidation coating for high-temperature graphite electrode”, published on March 19, 2014, a composition is proposed that includes Al 2 O 3 15-50 wt.%, B 2 O 3 5-30 wt.%, MgO 1-5 wt.%, dispersing agent 0-5 wt.% (citric acid ammonium tri, polyamic acid, sodium tripolyphosphate), as well as a solution of phosphoric acid and Al(OH) 3 20-70 wt. %. A significant drawback is the presence of phosphorus in the composition. Phosphorus has a variable oxidation state and actively participates in oxidation-reduction reactions, changing the physicochemical ratios during electrolysis, which leads to current loss, a decrease in current density, as well as the transition and accumulation of phosphorus in the metal.
A method for preparing a protective composition for a carbon-graphite anode is proposed in CN 101386995 A “Protective anti-oxidation coating of a carbon anode for the electrolysis of aluminum and a method for its application,” published on August 25, 2010. On the pre-cleaned carbon-graphite surface of the anode, a composition of the following composition is applied by spraying in layers (up to 3 layers, the thickness of one layer is 0.1-0.2 mm): 1-25 wt.% bisphenol A-type, 0.1-16 wt.% B 4 C and/or 2-13 wt.% boron oxide, 15-50 wt.% Al 2 O 3 , pseudoboehmite 0-20 wt.%, 10-30 wt.% aluminum oxide sol, 0.1-0.3 wt. .% defoamer, the remainder is water. The authors of the patent do not provide the dispersion composition of the composition, which affects the formation of the microstructure of the coating, and, consequently, the level of its mechanical properties. The disadvantage of the invention is the presence in the composition of layers of boron carbide, the presence of which, upon contact with the electrolyte melt, can lead to a gradual transition of boron into aluminum.
The composition of the protective coating composition is disclosed in more detail in CN 1584125A “Protection against oxidation of carbon anodes for aluminum electrolysis, deep anti-oxidation layer and method of its application”, published on 10/18/2006, where 15% ready-made aluminum trioxide sol is used as a base. The material is a mixture of the above Al 2 O 3 sol (5-60 wt.%), AlF 3 (d cp <74 μm, up to 30 wt.%), Al 2 O 3 powder (d cp <165 μm, 16-25 wt.%), B 2 O 3 powder (d cp <165 μm, 1-3 wt.%), 20% polyvinyl alcohol (7 g), which is prepared at room temperature until a homogeneous paste is formed. The composition can be applied in several continuous layers (no more than 4) to the prepared surface of the baked anode by spraying or brushing. The coating is dried for 12 hours, after which, if necessary, the next layer/layers are applied. However, the authors do not indicate the thickness of the layers of the protective coating, and also do not disclose the details of the preparation of the composition, in particular, the sequence of mixing the components. A disadvantage of the invention is also the presence of boron compounds in the composition, the presence of which is undesirable from the point of view of the possible penetration of boron impurities into the metal.
All considered compositions contain various phases of Al 2 O 3 and fluorine-containing substances as the main components, which should ensure the achievement of a technical result, namely the implementation of the protective functions of the coating material due to the formation of aluminum oxyfluorides. Formation of aluminum oxyfluorides by reactions:
подавляет образование свободного кислорода на аноде в ходе электролиза, за счет чего снижается скорость окисления анодного материла.suppresses the formation of free oxygen at the anode during electrolysis, thereby reducing the oxidation rate of the anode material.
However, coatings based on oxyfluorides can only be implemented in the form of compositions whose components do not change the physical chemistry of electrolysis and do not deteriorate the quality of the resulting aluminum. In this regard, the most “safe” compositions of protective coatings should contain components present in the system during electrolysis, in particular AlF 3 , NaF and Al and/or Al 2 O 3, as well as modifying components, the introduction of which will ensure antioxidant protective properties , as well as adhesion of the coating to the carbon surface of the anode.
The invention according to CN101250723A “An oxidation-resistant anode layer made of carbon-containing material for the electrolysis of aluminum, a method for its preparation and a method for applying the coating,” published on January 13, 2010, is a gradient multilayer material consisting of a base primer, an intermediate barrier and an outer protective layer.
Applying a base primer layer to the surface of a baked carbon-graphite anode, which promotes adhesion of the main composition of the protective coating to the anode surface and reduces mechanical and thermal stresses. Composition of the primer layer suspension: aqueous fluorine resin 15-45 vol.%, boron-containing substance (for example B 2 O 3 ) 25-50 vol.%, d cp <165 µm, alumina sol 1-25 vol.%, 74 µm, powder heat-resistant component (Al 2 O 3 ) 5-58 vol.%, d cp = 74 μm, defoamer 0.1-0.5 vol.%, water 12-40 vol.%. The primer coating suspension is applied by spraying in 2-3 layers with an interval of 1-3 hours.
у.The formation of the intermediate barrier layer provided by this invention should serve to isolate the carbon matrix from the external oxidizing environment. The suspension of the intermediate barrier layer includes aqueous fluoride resin 4-22 vol.%, B 2 O 3 1-16 vol.%, d cp <165 μm, alumina sol 1-20 vol.%, 74 μm, powder of a heat-resistant component (Al 2 O 3 ) 1-26 vol.%, d cp =74 μm, defoamer 0.2-0.5 vol.%, water 21-45 vol.%. The suspension is sprayed onto the dried primer layer 1-2 times and dried for 1-3 hours at normal conditions.
2.The composition of the outer protective layer contains aqueous fluoride resin 3-20 vol.%, B 2 O 3 1-16 vol.%, d cp <165 μm, alumina sol 10-30 vol.% and powder of a heat-resistant component (Al 2 O 3 ) 6-59 vol.%, d cp =74 µm, defoamer 0.1-0.5 vol.%, water 22-42 vol.%. The resulting paste is sprayed 1-2 times and dried for 1-3 hours at ambient conditions. The coating density is 0.5-2 g/ m2 .
The authors of this invention give the order of introduction of components when preparing the coating material. Thus, to obtain the target layer according to the recipe given in the patent, an aluminum oxide sol with a dispersed phase content of at least 5% and a defoamer (for example, DF-558 or CLT-371) are first added to the specified amount of water, then a heat-resistant component from the Al 2 series O 3 , AlF 3 , norbide or a mixture thereof. Aqueous fluoride resin containing F (12-50%, M = 4⋅10 3 - 10⋅10 4 ) and a boron-containing substance (B 2 O 3 , H 3 VO 3 ,) are introduced at the final stage of preparation.
The advantage of this invention is the use of a base primer layer to ensure sufficient adhesion of the coating to the carbon surface of the anode. Moreover, the composition of all proposed functional layers includes Al 2 O 3 and/or AlF 3 and fluoride resin, which should contribute to the implementation of protective properties due to the occurrence of reactions (1-6). The authors of this invention note that the multilayer material after drying and firing at 900 °C has a uniform structure and is characterized by the absence of cracks. However, test results under industrial conditions are not available. It should also be noted that from a technological point of view, the implementation of the proposed multilayer coating requires significant time and labor costs in an industrial environment. In addition, despite the good protective properties of coatings, the content of boron in the composition is undesirable. At the initial stage of electrolysis, the interaction of Al and B leads to the formation of liquid-phase aluminum borate, which, creating a continuous layer, fills defects in the anode surface and impedes the diffusion of oxygen to it. However, later, upon contact with the electrolyte melt, boron passes into the electrolyte, and then into the resulting metal.
The implementation of a protective coating for a carbon-graphite anode is proposed in CN201510442632.8A “A type of paint for the oxidation protection of carbon anodes for aluminum electrolysis,” published on May 29, 2018. The authors propose a suspension material, which includes: Al 2 O 3 powder (30-40 wt%); NaF (10-20 wt%); AlF 3 (10-20 wt%); composite antioxidant in the form of a mixture of metal Al and B powders (1.0-5.0 wt%); binding agent (liquid glass) 10-25 wt.%; sodium bentonite or attapulgite (2-5 wt%); the rest is solvent (water). Preferred dispersion of components: Al 2 O 3 ≤ 10 μm; NaF ≤ 45 µm; AlF 3 ≤ 45 µm; components of the powder mixture Al and B ≤ 5 µm.
1.The compositions of protective compositions that demonstrated the best results during tests under electrolysis conditions are shown in Table 1.
The suspension was preliminarily applied to the anode surface, including the side surfaces, by spraying and/or brushing in two layers until a thickness of 0.5 mm was achieved. Then dried for 12 hours. The number of layers may be greater; each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried.
From the point of view of using this invention in the development of a protective coating material for carbon anodes of an aluminum electrolyzer against oxidation, the following disadvantages can be noted:
- присутствие бора в элементной форме или в составе исходных компонентов не приемлемо, поскольку неизбежен переход бора в алюминий;- the presence of boron in elemental form or as part of the starting components is not acceptable, since the transition of boron to aluminum is inevitable;
- использование в качестве связующего жидкого стекла: поскольку в составе жидкого стекла присутствует основание SiO3 2-, его использование в составе не допускается, так как кремний будет переходить в расплав алюминия.- use of liquid glass as a binder: since the composition of liquid glass contains the base SiO 3 2- , its use in the composition is not allowed, since silicon will go into the aluminum melt.
The closest in technical essence and implementation of the claimed invention is the invention according to patent RU 2387741 “Protective coatings of the anode”, IPC S25S3/12, publ. 04/27/2010, according to which the protective coating includes two layers: a pre-applied coating (underlayer) and a main coating (top layer), which provide protection for the anode when applied together. The sublayer consists of finely ground carbon material (average particle size of the order of 15 microns), resistant to oxidation of the binder dispersed in the solution. An aqueous solution of sodium or potassium silicate is used as a binder. The top layer of the coating contains finely ground dispersed material, characterized by a bimodal particle size distribution, predominantly containing alumina or a mixture of alumina and cryolite dispersed in a binder solution with a cryolite content of no more than 40 wt.%. The authors of the invention provide a method of application and note that the use of a protective coating system provides increased resistance to oxidation when the baked anode burns out, reduces the penetration of unwanted impurities into the molten electrolyte and increases the service life of the anode.
The disadvantages of the prototype include:
- длительность технологической операции нанесения покрытия, поскольку покрытие состоит из двух слоев;- the duration of the technological operation of applying the coating, since the coating consists of two layers;
- нетехнологичность в условиях промышленного нанесения и дополнительные затраты на сушку покрытия, которая происходит в несколько этапов (после нанесения подслоя его сушат при температурах 80 до 150 °C в течение 3 часов, затем наносят основной слой покрытия и сушат при температурах от 80 до 200°C в течение 2 -8 часов);- low-tech in industrial application conditions and additional costs for drying the coating, which occurs in several stages (after applying the sublayer, it is dried at temperatures of 80 to 150 ° C for 3 hours, then the main coating layer is applied and dried at temperatures from 80 to 200 ° C for 2 -8 hours);
Поскольку в составе жидкого стекла присутствует основание SiO3 2-, его использование в составе не допускается, так как кремний будет переходить в расплав алюминия и загрязнять металл.- use as a binder of aqueous solutions of silicates, such as sodium silicate Na 2 O(SiO 2 ) n , or potassium silicate K 2 O(SiO 2 ) n, that is, liquid glass. Since the composition of liquid glass contains the base SiO 3 2- , its use in the composition is not allowed, since silicon will pass into the aluminum melt and contaminate the metal.
Disclosure of the Invention
The objective of the proposed invention and the technical result is the development of a coating material (composition) and a method for its production that protects the baked carbon anodes of aluminum electrolyzers from oxidative degradation and reduces the entry of unwanted impurities into the molten electrolyte.
The problem is solved, and the result is achieved due to the fact that in the method of manufacturing a coating material for protecting carbon anode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers from oxidative degradation, including preparing a composition from industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials containing fluorine and aluminum compounds, with a water-soluble binder and applying the resulting composition On the prepared surface of the anode blocks by spraying, a layer of material is formed that limits the access of oxygen and carbon dioxide of the electrolysis reaction medium to the material of the anode blocks. The formation of such a layer on the surface of the anode blocks according to the claimed invention occurs due to the formation of aluminum oxyfluorides according to reactions (1-5), which suppresses the formation of free oxygen on the anode during electrolysis, and as a result, reduces the rate of its oxidation.
According to the proposed invention, which involves preparing a composition from industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials with a binder and applying the resulting mixture to the surface of baked anodes, the difference is that to implement the protective functions of the coating, electrolyte powder is used, the granulometric composition of which is characterized by an average particle size of 0.01 - 0.315 mm, as well as a water-soluble binder to achieve the required level of antioxidant properties and adhesion of the coating material to the carbon surface.
The technical result is achieved, inter alia, thanks to the following distinctive features of the invention:
- присутствию в составе материала соединений фтора и алюминия, что способствует формированию оксифторидов алюминия в защитном слое материала непосредственно в процессе эксплуатации анодных блоков, а также обеспечивает чистоту производимого алюминия при попадании и растворении материала защитного покрытия в электролизную ванну;- the presence of fluorine and aluminum compounds in the material, which promotes the formation of aluminum oxyfluorides in the protective layer of the material directly during operation of the anode blocks, and also ensures the purity of the produced aluminum when the protective coating material enters and dissolves in the electrolysis bath;
- использованию в композиции покрытия в качестве связующего нетоксичной технологической водорастворимой добавки (класс опасности 4 или менее), которая представляет собой смесь натриевых и полиалкеленоксидных производных полиметиленнафталинсульфокислот и производных гликозидов с коксовым остатком не менее 30 масс.%.- use in the coating composition as a binder of a non-toxic technological water-soluble additive (hazard class 4 or less), which is a mixture of sodium and polyalkelene oxide derivatives of polymethylene naphthalene sulfonic acids and glycoside derivatives with a coke residue of at least 30 wt.%.
Основными компонентами композиции покрытия для защиты углеродных анодных блоков алюминиевых электролизеров от окислительной деградации являются криолит 80-90 масс.% и глинозем 20-10 масс.%, при этом фазовый состав промышленного криолит-глиноземного сырья представлен следующими соединениями: Na3AlF6, Na5Al3F14, α-Al2O3, CaF2, Na2Ca3Al2F14 и K2NaAlF6, и водорастворимое связующее, в качестве которого используют смесь натриевых и полиалкеленоксидных производных полиметиленнафталинсульфокислот и производных гликозидов с коксовым остатком не менее 30 масс.%.The main components of the coating composition for protecting the carbon anode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers from oxidative degradation are cryolite 80-90 wt.% and alumina 20-10 wt.%, while the phase composition of industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials is represented by the following compounds: Na 3 AlF 6 , Na 5 Al 3 F 14 , α-Al 2 O 3 , CaF 2 , Na 2 Ca 3 Al 2 F 14 and K 2 NaAlF 6 , and a water-soluble binder, which is used as a mixture of sodium and polyalkelene oxide derivatives of polymethylene naphthalene sulfonic acids and glycoside derivatives with a coke residue not less than 30 wt.%.
The combination of these differences makes it possible to obtain a protective coating 3-5 mm thick, which is a continuous gas-impermeable layer, has adhesion to the carbon material of the baked anode blocks, is resistant to cracking and has sufficient density to limit the diffusion of oxygen to the carbon surface of the anode. At the same time, the application method and composition of the coating meet the requirements of low toxicity and environmental safety.
Implementation of the method
K2NaAlF6. The main components of the protective coating composition are cryolite (80-90 wt.%) and alumina (20-10 wt.%), while the phase composition of industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials is represented by the following compounds: Na 3 AlF 6 , Na 5 Al 3 F 14 , α-Al 2 O 3 , CaF 2 , Na 2 Ca 3 Al 2 F 14 and K 2 NaAlF 6.
The electrolyte is pre-ground to a particle size of less than 1 mm. After crushing, grinding and screening, the electrolyte is a powder, the granulometric composition of which is characterized by an average particle size of 0.01 - 0.315 mm. The proposed granulometric composition is most preferable from a technological point of view to eliminate the settling of particles during the preparation process and to provide the necessary rheological properties for applying the protective coating composition by spraying.
The composition of the protective coating for the baked anode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers is prepared from a mixture of prepared electrolyte containing fluorine and aluminum compounds, and a water-soluble binder, which is a mixture of sodium and polyalkelene oxide derivatives of polymethylene naphthalene sulfonic acids and glycoside derivatives with a coke residue of at least 30 wt.%. An aqueous solution of the binder is introduced gradually until the required consistency and viscosity of the composition is obtained with constant stirring until the components are uniformly distributed by volume.
Next, the prepared composition is applied with a pneumatic spray to the surface of laboratory samples of anode blocks, previously cleaned of dust and contaminants, or to the surface of industrial anode blocks, and dried at room temperature for 24 hours.
To determine mass loss during oxidation, laboratory samples of anode blocks with protective coatings and witness samples without coatings are kept in an oven at 750°C for 6 hours (heating rate - 5°C/min, cooling - at the furnace cooling rate). To control the change in mass during oxidation, laboratory samples are weighed before and after oxidation on a balance with a resolution of 0.1 mg.
Table 2 presents the composition of laboratory samples of protective coatings and the results of testing laboratory samples of anode blocks with coatings at 750°C for 6 hours.

4:1.According to the results given in Table 2, it can be seen that compositions No. 2-4 containing cryolite (80-90 wt.%), Al 2 O 3 (20-10 wt.%) with a ratio of dry matter/ binder 3:1 or 4:1.
When the Al 2 O 3 content is less than 10 wt.%, the viscosity of the composition is significantly reduced, which leads to the coating running off from the protected surface. When the Al 2 O 3 content increases to more than 20 wt.%, loss of adhesion to the surface of the anode block and crack formation are observed; when the Al 2 O 3 content increases to 40 wt.%, the composition is also characterized by increased viscosity, which makes application by spraying difficult.
Table 3 presents the phase composition of cryolite-alumina raw materials used to obtain coatings of two compositions (No. 3 and No. 6 from Table 2) according to research using X-ray phase analysis and the results of testing laboratory samples of anode blocks with coatings at 750°C for 6 hours .

According to the results given in Tables 2-3, it is clear that the highest resistance to oxidation has protective coatings obtained from cryolite-alumina raw materials with a cryolite phase content (Na 3 AlF 6 ) of 61.4 wt.%, chiolite (Na 5 Al 3 F 14 ) 20.9 wt.% and corundum (α-Al 2 O 3 ) 12.6 wt.% at a dry matter/binder ratio of 3:1 or 4:1. This composition was recommended for industrial testing.
In industrial conditions, the mass of anode blocks with protective coatings and anode witness blocks without coatings was monitored before testing and the mass of cinders after testing. The phase composition of the coating material was also monitored before and after testing, which confirms the absence of metal contaminants. Table 4 presents the results of X-ray phase analysis and comparison of a sample of the original electrolyte powder and a sample of the protective coating after industrial tests.
For the coating sample after testing, in comparison with the sample of the original material, an increase in the content of α-Al 2 O 3 (27 wt.%) and a decrease in the content of the Na 5 Al 3 F 14 (chiolite) phase are observed, respectively. A small amount of Na 2 (SO 4 ) (1.4 wt.%) appears in the composition, which is due to the use of a binder coating composition in the composition, which is a mixture of sodium and polyalkelene oxide derivatives of polymethylene naphthalene sulfonic acids and glycoside derivatives

- электролит фазового состава: Na3AlF6 (61,4 масс.%), Na5Al3F14 (20,9 масс.%), α-Al2O3 (12,6 масс.%), CaF2 (4,2 масс.%), Na2Ca3Al2F14 (0,4 масс.%), и K2NaAlF6 (0,3 масс.%);- electrolyte phase composition: Na 3 AlF 6 (61.4 wt.%), Na 5 Al 3 F 14 (20.9 wt.%), α-Al 2 O 3 (12.6 wt.%), CaF 2 (4.2 wt%), Na 2 Ca 3 Al 2 F 14 (0.4 wt%), and K 2 NaAlF 6 (0.3 wt%);
1:2).- water-soluble binder (aqueous solution 1:2).
Previously, the electrolyte was crushed and screened to a fraction of 0.01 - 0.315 mm. Next, the initial components of the mixture were dosed in a ratio of 4:1 (4 parts by weight of electrolyte, 1 part by weight of binder) with subsequent step-by-step introduction of the binder. Then the components were mixed until a homogeneous composition was obtained using a mixer. If necessary, the amount of binder was further adjusted to obtain a composition viscosity that ensures uniform application.
Using the pneumatic spraying method, a protective coating was applied to the side surfaces of the anode blocks, which had previously been cleaned of dust by a pressure of compressed air. Coating can also be applied using mechanical (centrifugal) sprayers. Visual control of the uniformity and homogeneity of the distribution of the composition was carried out. The thickness of the protective coating was 3-5 mm. After installing the anode blocks with coatings and testing in the electrolyzer, visual control of the quality of the coatings was carried out for the presence of damage (voids, cracks, peeling of the coating, signs of burnout of the carbon material) during the testing process. As a result of control observations, signs of oxidation of the coated areas of the anode blocks were not established.
For industrial testing and comparison, uncoated anode witness blocks were also tested. According to the test program, measurements of the physical parameters of each cinder (overall dimensions, weight) were carried out. Industrial tests in electrolyzers have demonstrated that the use of a protective composition can reduce the consumption of baked anode material by 3.2 kg/t of aluminum.
The scope of legal protection, taking into account the disclosure of the invention, is sought for a method of producing a coating to protect carbon anode blocks, which includes mixing the crushed dispersed material with an aqueous solution of a binder until a homogeneous composition and application. In this case, pre-crushed industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials are used as a dispersed material. The coating composition is prepared from industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials containing fluorine and aluminum compounds with a water-soluble binder, thereby ensuring antioxidant properties and adhesion of the coating material to the carbon surface. The resulting composition is applied to the prepared surface of the anode blocks to form a layer of material that limits the access of oxygen and carbon dioxide of the electrolysis reaction medium to the material of the anode blocks.
As a water-soluble binder, you can use a mixture of sodium and polyalkelene oxide derivatives of polymethylene naphthalene sulfonic acids and glycoside derivatives with a coke residue of at least 30 wt.%. To ensure the protective functions of the coating, electrolyte powder is used, the granulometric composition of which is characterized by an average particle size of 0.01 - 0.315 mm; if necessary, the electrolyte is crushed and screened to the specified size. Cryolite 80-90 wt.% and alumina 20-10 wt.% can be selected as the main components of the coating composition to protect the carbon anode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers from oxidative degradation, while the phase composition of industrial cryolite-alumina raw materials is preferably represented by the following compounds: Na 3 AlF 6 , Na 5 Al 3 F 14 , α-Al 2 O 3 , CaF 2 , Na 2 Ca 3 Al 2 F 14 and K 2 NaAlF 6 , and a water-soluble binder. The method involves using the method of pneumatic spraying of a protective coating on the side surfaces of the anode blocks, as well as applying a protective coating composition on the surfaces of carbon anode blocks, previously cleaned of dust by compressed air pressure, pneumatic spraying, as well as applying the coating using mechanical sprayers, in particular centrifugal ones sprayers.
