Abstract
Description
The invention relates to electrometallurgy, in particular to the production of electric steel in arc steel-smelting furnaces and ferroalloys in ore-thermal furnaces, and can be used to increase the service life of graphite electrodes operated in oxidizing environments of metallurgical units.
Known is an oxidation-resistant coating material for a graphite electrode during melting in an electric furnace (CN patent No. 110002839, publ. 07/12/2019), made from a mixture of silicon carbide powder, dense corundum powder, alumina micropowder, silicon micropowder, metallic silicon powder, boron carbide powder and binder liquid aluminum dihydrogen phosphate in the following weight ratios: 10 to 15 parts of 200 mesh silicon carbide powder; 15 to 20 parts of 320 mesh silicon carbide powder; 25-35 parts of dense corundum powder 200 mesh; 20~30 parts of alumina powder 3~5 microns; 12~16 parts silicon powder 0.5~1 micron; 1~2 parts of silicon metal powder 200 mesh; 0.2~0.3 parts of 200 mesh boron carbide powder; 48-52 parts of liquid aluminum dihydrogen phosphate. All the powders are poured into the mixer and stirred for 10~15 minutes, aluminum dihydrogen phosphate solution is added and the mixing is continued for 10~15 minutes, obtaining a finished liquid coating. The liquid coating is evenly applied to the surface of the graphite electrode (except the contact area of the conductive plate) with a spray gun or manually, the coating thickness is 2~3mm for spontaneous drying
The disadvantage of this method is the insufficiently complete filling of the pores when applied to graphite electrodes, especially with a large cross section. When applied, a thin layer is obtained, not fixed on the surface, which can lead to its easy mechanical removal. Aluminum oxides, phosphates and boron carbide can adversely affect the further operation of the electrodes due to contamination of the melt.
There is a known method for the treatment of carbon graphites by impregnation with oxide solutions (patent CN No. 100534951, publ. 07/11/2007), including the treatment of carbon graphites with an oxide solution, characterized in that: petroleum coke, pitch coke and pitch are used as raw materials, the mixture is subjected to mixing, pressing, repeated roasting and impregnation , graphitization and machining, followed by impregnation with a solution of oxides. The raw material composition of the billet: particles of petroleum coke and pitch coke as a filler, pitch as a binder. The granulometric composition of the filler is as follows: 45-85% for a fraction less than 0.5 mm, 15-55% for a fraction from 0.5 to 1 mm. The amount of pitch is 20-30%. For impregnation with an oxide solution, the following composition is used: a mixture of two ultrafine powders 0.05-0.5 μm Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 or a mixture of two ultrafine powders 0.05-0.5 μm Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 or a mixture of Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 and TiO 2 . Then 1.0-3.0 wt.% Na 5 P 3 O 10 is added, thoroughly mixed and mechanically crushed until a translucent colloidal solution is formed, after which the carbon-graphite product is placed in an impregnating tank, air is pumped out to -0.098-0.085 MPa and kept at 0 ,5-1.5 hours, then the above solution is introduced into the tank and maintained under a pressure of 0.5 to 1.2 MPa for 3~8 hours. Then the impregnated product is removed from the impregnation tank, dried and heated to 300-950 °C for 80-120 hours.
The disadvantage of this method is the use of phosphates and aluminum oxide, which adversely affect the operation of electrodes in technological processes due to contamination of the melt. In addition, during impregnation, a continuous layer is formed that has no affinity for the electrode surface, which can crack under high-temperature conditions or be mechanically damaged during operation.

650-750 °C.A known method for obtaining a hardening coating on porous materials (RF patent No. 2049763C1, publ. 12/10/1995) includes applying to the surface of the product an exothermic composition containing silicon oxide, aluminum and an aqueous solution of liquid glass, drying and heating, characterized in that the composition contains the indicated components in the following ratio, wt.: silicon oxide 24.0-25.6; aluminum 14.4-16.0; 1-3% aqueous solution of liquid glass. The rest after drying at room temperature is additionally kept at 100-120 °C for 2-3 hours, and then chemical combustion is initiated by heating to 650-750 °C.
The disadvantage of this method is the formation of a hardening coating that has no affinity for the graphite substrate, which can lead to cracking at high temperatures or be mechanically damaged during operation.

St. Petersburg: Private scientific and educational institution of additional professional education Humanitarian National Research Institute "NATIONAL RAZVITIE", 2021, pp. 26-28), taken as a prototype, including the formation of a protective layer on the surface of the electrodes obtained by impregnation with medium temperature pitch and further firing at temperatures up to 1000 °C.
The disadvantage is the low structural ordering of the coke formed in the pores of the electrode during firing of medium-temperature pitch, which affects the high burnout rate of the impregnation.
The technical result is to increase the resistance of graphite electrodes to high-temperature oxidation.
The technical result is achieved by the fact that the method of protecting metallurgical graphite electrodes from high-temperature oxidation includes obtaining a protective layer on the surface of the electrodes using an impregnating composition containing medium-temperature pitch, heating and isothermal exposure of the electrodes, while first preparing the impregnating composition by heating the medium-temperature pitch to a temperature of 150 to 170°C and subsequent addition of 20 to 30 wt.% of one of the refractory oxides or mixtures thereof, which are titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide and chromium (III) oxide, then the graphite electrodes are loaded into an autoclave and filled with prepared impregnating composition, heated from 250 to 350°C at a pressure of 5 to 6 atm and kept for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, after which the composition is drained, and the electrodes are cooled to room temperature, then the electrodes are subjected to heat treatment by heating with speed from 2 to 3°С/min up to temperatures from 1200 to 1300°C and exposure at the final temperature for 1.5 to 2.5 hours and cooled in air until a protective layer forms on the electrode surface.
The method is implemented as follows. First, an impregnating composition is prepared, which consists of medium-temperature pitch and refractory oxides or a mixture thereof. Medium-temperature pitch is placed in a tank and heated to a temperature of 150 to 170 ° C, after which one of the following refractory oxides is added: titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, chromium (III) oxide, constituting 20-30 wt.% of the total mass of the impregnating composition or their compounds, namely 10 wt.% SiO 2 , 10 wt.% TiO 2 or 20 wt.% SiO 2 , 10 wt.% TiO 2 or 10 wt.% SiO 2 , 20 wt.% TiO 2 or 15 wt. % SiO 2 , 15 wt.% TiO 2 or 10 wt.% SiO 2 , 10 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 20 wt.% SiO 2 , 10 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 10 wt.% SiO 2 , 20 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 15 wt.% SiO 2 , 15 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 10 wt.% TiO 2 , 10 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 20 wt.% TiO 2 , 10 wt. .% Cr 2 O 3 or 10 wt.% TiO 2 , 20 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 15 wt.% TiO 2 , 15 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 or 10 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 , 10 wt. .% TiO 2 , 10 wt.% SiO 2 or 6.65 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 , 6.7 wt.% TiO 2 , 6.65 wt.% SiO 2 . The composition of the impregnating composition depends on the wettability of oxides by heated medium-temperature pitch. Then the graphite electrodes are loaded into the autoclave, where the pre-prepared impregnating composition is poured, preventing air from entering. The autoclave is heated to a temperature of 250 to 350 ºС at a pressure of 5 to 6 atm, after which it is kept for 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Then the impregnating composition is drained, and the electrodes are removed from the autoclave and cooled to room temperature in air. The cooled electrodes are placed in a kiln, where they are heated to a temperature of 1200 to 1300°C at a rate of 2 to 3°C/min and held for 1.5 to 2.5 hours without air access. When heated, the release of volatile components from the medium-temperature pitch and its coking occurs. On the electrode surface, a continuous coating of coked pitch is formed with the inclusion of oxides that are resistant to high-temperature oxidation. After exposure, the electrodes are removed from the furnace and left to cool in air until completely cooled.
