Technical field
д. The present invention falls within the field of microcavity optical devices and also belongs to the field of fiber optics. It refers to the use of so-called surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP, SAN) devices based on the formation of whispering gallery mode microcavities (WGMs) in a cylindrical region near the optical fiber surface [1]. The basis for the PAN microresonator, unlike other microresonators, is a cheap and affordable quartz optical fiber, the radius of which is controlled with nanometer accuracy. Due to the availability of optical fibers and the variability of their design, PAN devices have great potential in the field of optical communications [2], biomedicine [3], sensors [4], etc.
One of the promising applications is the use of such microresonators for the nonlinear generation of optical frequency combs [5, 6]. They will open up great opportunities for a variety of tasks, including spectroscopy [7], high-precision radars [8], etc. Note that such radiation generators based on PAN microresonators have not yet been experimentally demonstrated.
Stretched microfibers are used to excite whispering gallery modes on the surface of PAN microcavities. It is known that stretched microfibers can demonstrate the highest possible efficiency in excitation of microresonators [9]. Microfibers are made from a standard 125 µm optical fiber using heating and drawing [10]. The secondary plastic sheath is partially removed from the fiber, the cleaned section of the fiber is placed in a ceramic tube, and the ends are fixed on movable platforms. The heating of the ceramic tube to the melting temperature is carried out using a CO 2 laser. After preheating, the fibers inside the platform tube begin to move in the same direction, but at different speeds. This is a cyclical process, as the platforms move first in one direction, then in the other direction along the fiber drawing. As a result, depending on the number of drawing cycles, the laser power and the speeds of the moving platforms, it is possible to obtain various microfibers with different waist lengths, adiabaticity, thickness and bond strength.
The advantage of a stretched microfiber for excitation of a microresonator is its ease of use. It is enough just to bring the microfiber to the microresonator to ensure sufficient focusing of the input and output beams. The radially distributed mode in the microfiber waist will propagate outside the fiber and, due to the effect of frustrated total internal reflection, excites the WGM in the resonator. Due to the conical shape of the microfiber, it is possible to control the coupling coefficient with the microresonator, i.e. excitation efficiency of the microresonator. To do this, it is sufficient to move the microfiber along its axis, changing the point of contact with the resonator.
One of the most important problems both for the creation of optical comb generators based on PAN microresonators and for detection problems using PAN microcavities for biomedical applications is the determination of the coupling coefficient. Indeed, for the task of creating comb generators, it is necessary to provide the so-called critical coupling, when the quality factor due to the coupling strength coincides with the intrinsic quality factor of the microresonator [11], since then the maximum amount of energy will be accumulated in resonant modes. On the other hand, for non-resonant mode applications, maximum (rather than optimal) coupling strength may be required. Because of this, the problem of creating methods for determining the coupling strength of exciting microfibers and a cylindrical microresonator is topical, which will simplify the introduction of surface axial photonics microresonators in many branches of science and industry.
State of the art
To date, two methods have been proposed that make it possible to characterize the strength of the coupling between the exciting elements and the microresonator. Thus, in [12], to evaluate the coupling, it is proposed to measure the transmission from the width of the resonance line, and the minimum of transmission depending on the width of the resonance line will be achieved at critical coupling. This method, implemented for microsphere microresonators, can also be used for cylindrical microresonators. This method is standard and is widely used to optimize the establishment systems [11]. The main disadvantage of this method is that it can be used to determine when the coupling is critical, but it is impossible to determine what its value is for an arbitrary system at a particular moment without measuring the transmission and linewidth depending on the distance between the exciting element and the microresonator.
Another method described in [13] is specific to cylindrical PAN microresonators. It allows you to determine the coupling strength in a cylindrical microresonator. For this, the formalism of the scattering matrix and the approach of describing whispering gallery modes in PAN microcavities are used [14]. In this method, to determine the bonding strength, it is necessary to measure the transmission spectra of the microfiber-microresonator system for different positions of the contact point along the x axis of the microresonator. Further, using a model for describing the transmission spectra based on the stationary Schrödinger equation [15], the local coupling parameters, including the coupling coefficient, are determined by the method of parameter selection. The disadvantage of this method is the complexity and labor costs, the lack of uniqueness of the solution in the selection of local parameters.
Disclosure of invention
The objective of the invention is to create a simple method for measuring the strength of the connection of stretched optical fibers with a cylindrical microresonator.
The technical result is the ability to quickly determine the connection between a stretched optical microfiber and a cylindrical microresonator for arbitrary contact points along the microfiber. This makes it possible, among other things, to determine the position of the microfiber necessary to achieve critical coupling, which is necessary in the problems of creating radiation generators based on microcavities.
The problem is solved in a method for determining the strength of the connection of stretched optical fibers with a cylindrical microresonator device for surface axial nanophotonics. In the method, radiation is supplied to the first stretched optical fiber, which is in optical contact with the microresonator. Further, the signal through the non-resonant modes of the whispering gallery of the microcavity enters the second stretched optical fiber, while the receiving second stretched optical fiber is in optical contact with the microcavity with its waist (the thinnest region). Next, the power transfer coefficient from the first stretched fiber to the second is measured, which determines the coupling coefficient for the exciting microfiber.
In this case, the first and second stretched fibers have a similar shape, namely, they are characterized by a constant ratio of thicknesses where functions and coupling coefficients of stretched fibers.
In this case, microfibers identical in shape can be used as exciting and receiving stretched microfibers.
Also, to take into account losses in stretched microfibers, the power transfer coefficient from the first microfiber to the second one is preliminarily measured when they are in direct contact.
The simplicity of the method is due to the fact that the value of the coupling strength can be obtained from only two measurements for two points of contact of the leading stretched fiber - at the waist and at the point of interest to us, which also speeds up the possibility of determining the connection between the stretched optical microfiber and the cylindrical microresonator.
The method uses two elongated microfibers in contact with an excited microresonator and measures the signal that has exited the first microfiber, entered the whispering gallery modes of the microcavity, propagated through the cylindrical microresonator, and then exited the second. In this case, the receiving microfiber touches the microresonator with its constriction.
At the point of contact of the first microfiber, the radiation passes from it and begins to propagate in the microcavity. In this case, depending on the wavelength of the exciting radiation, it is possible to excite both resonant whispering gallery modes, which are localized in a certain region near the excitation point, and nonresonant whispering gallery modes, propagating at an arbitrary speed from the excitation point. There are significantly more such modes than resonant ones; therefore, most of the energy at an arbitrarily chosen radiation wavelength will fall precisely into such modes.
It is noteworthy that the power fed into these non-resonant modes will be directly proportional to the strength of the coupling. Indeed, since these modes do not experience the effect of self-interference [16] but propagate in a spiral, they are not subject to resonance conditions that complicate the analysis. Therefore, the radiation power propagating in non-resonant whispering gallery modes to the left and right of the contact point will be equal to
Нулевая координата соответствует перетяжке микроволокна. since no resonance conditions are imposed for these modes. In formula (1) is the radiation power delivered to the exciting stretched microfiber, and - desired total bond strength (power transfer coefficient) for the first microfiber. The z coordinate determines where the microfiber is in contact with the microresonator. The zero coordinate corresponds to the waist of the microfiber.
Then the signal at the output of the receiving microfiber will be defined as
Here - the strength of the connection between the microresonator and the receiving microfiber touching the microresonator with the center of its waist.
When deriving formula (2), we also assumed that the contact points of the microcavity and microfibers are close enough to each other (at a distance of the order of a millimeter) to ignore the losses during the propagation of the whispering gallery modes. Propagation loss within the microfibers, if present in the system, can be accounted for by additional calibration. For it, both microfibers are brought into contact with each other, but not with the microcavity, and the value of losses is measured during the passage of radiation through such a system of two microfibers.
Coupling coefficient then determined by averaging over wavelengths
Wavelength averaging avoids the contribution of energy transfer through resonant modes to the estimate of the coupling strength.
The value of the bond strength in the constriction is defined as
Для этого определяется постоянное отношение толщин по последовательным измерениям функции и и таким образом делается предположение об отношении сил связи в перетяжке:assuming that both stretched microfibers have the same shape and the same bond strength in the waist, which is a reasonable assumption. However, the calculation can also be carried out for unequal microfibers of different thickness in the waist, but the same shape (similarity). For this, a constant ratio of thicknesses is determined by successive measurements of the function and and thus an assumption is made about the ratio of the bonding forces in the constriction:
A schematic of the experimental setup used to demonstrate the operation of the method is shown in Fig. 1 where:
The internal single-frequency tunable laser source of an Apex Technologies AP2050 optical spectrum analyzer was used as a signal source. Stretched microfibers were created by us on our own drawing facility, the principle of operation of which is similar to the principle of operation described in the article [17], in which CO 2 laser radiation was used as a heating element. Both microfibers were stretched one after the other using the same power of the heating laser, the speed of the sliders, etc. This ensured the same shape of both stretched microfibers.
The radiation from the source was fed into an exciting stretched fiber, which was brought into contact with a cylindrical microresonator, and was located perpendicular to it. As a microresonator, we used an SMF-28 telecommunication fiber with a quartz sheath diameter of 125 μm, from which the secondary plastic sheath was previously removed.
The second stretched microfiber was also brought into contact with the microresonator. The contact point on the cylindrical microresonator was at a certain distance (on the order of half a millimeter) along the axis of the cylinder from the point of contact with the exciting fiber. The radiation that passed through the microresonator hit the receiving stretched microfiber and was transmitted to the input of the Apex Technologies AP2050 optical spectrum analyzer. Thus, we measured the transmission spectra microfiber-microresonator-microfiber systems.
0,5%. First, according to formula (4), the values of the bonding force in the waist of the stretched microfibers were determined, which amounted to 10%, i.e. an order of magnitude higher than the critical connection. Indeed, the critical coupling, determined by the equality of the quality factor of the coupling and its own quality factor [11], is 0.5% for a microresonator with a radius of 60 μm and a quality factor of 10 6 .
Then, the average power of the transmitted radiation was measured in turn with a change in the contact points along the first stretched microfiber, and thus, according to formula (3), the dependence was determined For verification, a similar procedure was performed for the second stretched fiber and the dependence was determined
The results are shown in FIG. 2, which shows the dependence of the coupling coefficient on the point of contact between the microfiber and the microresonator: a) for the winding stretched microfiber b) for the receiving stretched microfiber.
As it turned out, the coupling coefficient increases exponentially up to 0.1 when approaching the microfiber waist and remains constant along a large area. In this case, the coupling force can be reduced if the point of contact with the microresonator is far from the waist center. In particular, as can be seen from Fig.2a, if the contact point is selected with the coordinate then the bond strength will be those. the order of the necessary critical.
In addition, the comparison of figa and figa and figb confirms our assumption that the shape of the first and second stretched microfibers really almost the same, since the bond strength for both microfibers depends on the coordinate equally.
