The present invention relates to an optical brightener for whitening and brightening paper, cardboard, textiles and nonwovens, a method for manufacturing said optical brightener, the use of said brightener in papermaking processes, and a method for whitening paper.
State of the art
High levels of whiteness (commonly referred to as CIE whiteness) and brightness (eg ISO brightness) are important parameters for evaluating the quality of cellulosic substrates, in particular paper products, for the end user. The most important raw materials for such products are cellulose, pulp and lignin. However, these materials naturally absorb blue light and therefore have a yellowish tint, giving the products a dull appearance.
Optical brighteners (also called optical brighteners or OBAs or fluorescent whitening agents or FWAs) are used to compensate for the natural absorption of blue light by the raw material. OBAs typically absorb UV radiation with a maximum wavelength of 350 nm to 360 nm and convert this absorbed light into visible blue light with a maximum wavelength of 440 nm.
The optical performance of cellulose based products is evaluated according to known standard procedures for measuring CIE whiteness and ISO luminance. The CIE whiteness value is derived from measurements of light reflected by the paper over the entire visible light spectrum. Brightness is a measure of the reflectance of blue light.
It is known in today's world to apply optical brighteners (OBA) through various procedures to paper, cardboard, textile and non-woven products to increase the whiteness, brightness and hence the attractiveness of these products. The most widely used optical brighteners in these industries are anilino-substituted bistriazinyl derivatives of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid.
In the paper industry, OBA formula (1) is most widely used. OBA formulas (1) provide versatility for application anywhere on the paper machine, whether at the wet end (paper stock application) or on the paper surface using sizing or coating technologies. Other OBAs, in which the aniline-substituting component contains two sulfonic acid groups, provide particularly high whiteness when applied to the paper surface.
EP 0884312 A1 discloses a composition containing a fluorescent whitening agent with an active ingredient concentration of more than 30 wt. %. The active substance is 4,4'-di-triazinylamino-2,2'-di-sulfostilbene hydrate, which does not carry any substituents on the terminal aniline-substituting component.
WO 2010/060570 A1 discloses an optical brightening composition containing an OBA of the bis(triazinylamino)stilbene type with two sulfo groups on the terminal aniline substitution component. This bleach provides good compatibility with sizing compositions containing divalent metal salts.
There is still a need in the paper industry for improved OBAs and OBA formulations. Therefore, the challenge was to provide OBAs that are capable of providing whiteness and brightness with greater efficiency, with the ensuing benefits of improved stability and cost savings, with consistently good affinity for cellulosic substrates such as paper and board.

Smook, Handbook for Pulp & Paper Technologists, 2nd Edition Angus Wilde Publications, 1992). US 2007/0193707.The cellulose fibers contained in the paper base can be modified by physical and/or chemical methods, as described, for example, in chapters 13 and 15, respectively, in the Handbook for Pulp & Paper Technologists (GA Smook, Handbook for Pulp & Paper Technologists). , 2nd Edition Angus Wilde Publications, 1992). One example of chemical modification of cellulose fiber is the addition of an optical brightener, as described, for example, in EP 0884312 A1, EP 0899373 A1, WO 02/055646 A1, WO 2006/061399 A2, WO 2007/017336 A1, WO 2007/143182 A2, US 2006/0185808 and US 2007/0193707.
90°C.In a sixth aspect, the invention relates to the preparation of a surface brightening composition by adding at least one compound of formula (2) according to the invention as an optical brightener to a previously prepared aqueous solution of at least one surface sizing agent at a temperature of from 20°C to 90°C .
95.The base paper containing the surface brightening composition of the present invention may have any ISO brightness, including an ISO brightness that is at least 80, at least 90, or at least 95.
The base paper containing the surface brightening composition of the present invention may have any CIE whiteness, including at least 110, at least 115, at least 120, at least 125, at least 130, at least 135, at least 140, at least 145. The surface brightening composition of the invention tends to increase the CIE whiteness of the paper sheet compared to conventional surface brightening compositions containing similar levels of optical brighteners.
Тенденция к окрашиванию в зеленый цвет означается схемой a*-b*, где a* и b* являются цветовыми координатами в системе CIE Lab. ISO.The surface brightening composition of the present invention has a reduced tendency to turn green on the paper sheet to which it is applied, compared to conventional surface brightening compositions containing comparable amounts of optical brighteners. Greening is a phenomenon related to saturation of the paper sheet such that the CIE whiteness of the paper sheet does not increase even if the amount of optical brightener is increased. The green color trend is indicated by the a*-b* pattern, where a* and b* are color coordinates in the CIE Lab system. Accordingly, the surface brightening composition of the present invention allows the papermaker to achieve higher CIE whiteness and ISO brightness.

10Application example 10
A coating composition was prepared containing 70 parts of chalk (commercially available under the tradename Hydrocarb 55 from OMYA), 30 parts of clay (commercially available under the tradename Polygloss 90 from KaMin), 49.5 parts of water, 0.6 parts of dispersing agent ( commercially available under the tradename Topsperse GX-N from Coatex), 20 parts 50% latex (a styrene acrylate copolymer commercially available under the tradename Cartacoat B631 from Archroma), 80 parts 10% polyvinyl alcohol (commercially available under the tradename Mowiol 4-98 ) and an aqueous solution prepared according to preparation example 2 at concentrations of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8%. The solids content of the coating composition was adjusted to approx. 67% by adding water, and the pH was adjusted to 8-9 with sodium hydroxide. The coating composition was then applied to a 75 g/m 2 commercial neutral paper base sheet using an automatic wire rod applicator at the standard speed setting and standard rod load. The coated paper was then dried for 5 minutes in a hot air stream. The paper was then conditioned and its CIE whiteness and ISO brightness measured on a calibrated AUTOELREPHO® spectrophotometer according to ISO 11475 and 2470, respectively.
