Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to instrumentation, and in particular to a technique for measuring the flow of liquid metals using an electromagnetic method, i.e. a method based on the interaction of a moving conductive fluid with a magnetic field. This interaction obeys the Faraday law, according to which an electromotive force (EMF) is proportional to the velocity of the fluid in a fluid moving in a magnetic field.
[1, 2].A known method of measuring the flow rate of liquid metal flowing in a magnetic field through a steel non-magnetic pipe [1, 2].
The method consists in determining the flow rate of liquid metal by the potential difference between two electrodes welded to the outer surface of the pipe at points diametrically opposed along a line perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. In the flowmeter [2] an electromagnet is used, fed by a pulsed low-frequency bipolar stable current. In this case, the flow rate is the potential difference between the electrodes during the period when the transient process caused by switching the polarity of the magnetic field has ended.
The disadvantage of this method is the nonlinearity of the dependence of the volumetric flow rate of the liquid metal at high speeds. The nonlinearity of the flowmeter characteristic is caused by circulating currents in the liquid metal, which at high speeds generate secondary magnetic fields that distort the magnetic field of excitation and create a partial "removal" of it in the direction of movement of the liquid metal. This phenomenon is called the magnetohydrodynamic effect (MHD), which is characterized by the magnetic Reynolds number (Re m ), determined by the following formula:
Rem=R × v × σ × μ,Re m = R × v × σ × μ,
где R - радиус канала - характерный линейный размер;where R is the radius of the channel is the characteristic linear size;
v - скорость потока;v is the flow rate;
σ - электропроводность измеряемой среды;σ is the electrical conductivity of the measured medium;
μ - магнитная проницаемость измеряемой среды.μ is the magnetic permeability of the measured medium.
Since the magnetic Reynolds number depends on the flow velocity, the “removal” of the magnetic field of the inductor is absent at low speeds and gradually increases with increasing speed, thus, a nonlinear dependence of the readings on flow occurs.
The present invention eliminates the above disadvantage as follows. When applying the proposed method, in addition to measuring the potential difference between the electrodes, the axial component of the magnetic field (i.e., the field directed along the pipe axis) is measured in the central cross section of the channel.
Based on the result of measuring this component of the magnetic field, the meter is calculated and amended to correct the flowmeter, which eliminates the nonlinearity of the flowmeter characteristics.
When the medium being measured (i.e., liquid metal) is stationary or has a small speed of motion at which the magnetic Reynolds number is not more than unity, there is practically no deformation of the magnetic field. In this case, the axial component of the magnetic field is absent in the central transverse channel. With increasing flow velocity, the magnetic field of the inductor is deformed, shifting in the direction of motion of the liquid metal. In this case, in the central cross section of the channel, an axial component of the magnetic field appears, directed towards the movement of the liquid metal. The greater the flow rate, i.e. the higher Re m , the greater the axial component of the magnetic field in the central cross section of the channel.
In the present invention, the magnitude of the axial component of the magnetic field is measured and used to calculate the correction of the result of the flow measurement, eliminating the non-linearity of the flowmeter characteristics caused by the influence of the magnetic Reynolds number.
To measure the axial component of the magnetic field, a coil is provided in the flowmeter design, the turns of which are located on the outer perimeter of the pipe in the central cross section of the channel. In most cases, one turn is enough. The coil may include an electrode - medium - electrode circuit.
Since the plane of the coil coil is in the plane of symmetry of the inductor, the axial component of the magnetic field is absent in the plane of the coil. At liquid metal flow velocities corresponding to significant Reynolds magnetic numbers, the inductor’s magnetic field undergoes “removal”, the symmetry of the magnetic field with respect to the plane in which the coil of the induction coil is located is violated. The axial component of the magnetic field appears, i.e. field component normal to the plane of the coil. Since the magnetic field of the inductor is generated by a pulsed low-frequency bipolar stable current, an EMF appears in the coil coil, which is proportional to the axial component of the magnetic field and the frequency of switching its polarity. The flow meter is as follows.
The inductor creates a pulsed bipolar magnetic field of low frequency (0.5-5) Hz. If the coil turns are not connected to the electrode circuit, then only the quadrature component of the signal is induced in the coil, i.e. EMF proportional to the strength of the axial component of the magnetic field and the frequency of change of its polarity.
The signal taken from the electrodes consists of two components: quadrature and common mode.
The quadrature component is induced by the axial component of the magnetic field, it appears only during the transition process caused by the switching of the polarity of the magnetic field. The in-phase component of the signal is measured at those times when the magnetic field is set constant. This component characterizes volumetric flow. Moreover, the in-phase component of the signal is affected by the deformation of the magnetic field caused by the MHD effect, characterized by the magnetic Reynolds number. The more significant the deformation of the magnetic field of the inductor, the weaker the ratio of the in-phase component of the signal to the flow velocity.
Consider a variant of the invention, in which an electrode –measured medium – electrode circuit is included in the coil. In this case, the signal between the electrodes is measured twice. The first time the signal is measured in a period corresponding to the time of the transition process caused by switching the polarity of the magnetic field, and the second time in a period characterized by the time of the steady-state constant magnetic field of the inductor.
During the first measurement, the quadrature component of the signal is determined, and during the second measurement, the in-phase component of the signal is determined.
Consider a variant of the invention, in which the turns of the coil are not connected with the electrode circuit and the measured medium. In this case, the measurement of the quadrature component of the signal is performed at the coil for a period corresponding to the transient time caused by switching the polarity of the magnetic field, and the in-phase component of the signal is measured using electrodes in a period characterized by the time of the steady-state constant magnetic field of the inductor.
The application of the invention improves the accuracy of measuring the flow of liquid metals.
