Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the technology of nitrocellulose (SC), in particular to methods for the safe processing of nitrocellulose precipitation of waste water from industrial production of SC. The problem of neutralizing sewage sludge from nitrocellulose production is that SC in a neutral environment does not undergo chemical or biochemical decomposition and mineralization, and the chemical treatment of SC sediment should be carried out under strictly controlled conditions in order to avoid uncontrolled decomposition of nitrocellulose with the release of nitrous gases.
1.Cleaning sludge tanks, which are collections of nitrocellulose sewage sludge, is one of the priority measures to ensure production safety and prevent accidents at special chemical enterprises. The accumulation of SC-sediments in sludge collectors leads to a deterioration of the ecological and fire conditions, as well as to an increase in costs associated with the maintenance and operation of sediment accumulators. The potential threat to the contents of precipitation accumulators produced by SC in the environment is due to the fact that they contain a heterogeneous pulp of a mixture of semi-finished products and nitrocellulose waste, as well as nitric esters of polyhydric alcohols. Sewage sludge from neutralized wastewater produced by SC, depending on the technical solutions used to catch sludge from sewage and its storage, contains from 20% to 80% SC (dry), the rest is the mineral part - calcium and magnesium carbonates, sand, clay, oxides of aluminum and iron. Dried nitrocellulose sludge is classified as class 1 according to the degree of fire and explosion hazard.
Microbial attak of nitrocellulose / Brodman B.W., Devine M.P. // J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 1981. V. 26. №3. P. 997-1000). 7%.Unlike cellulose, nitrocellulose is resistant to microorganisms and remains unchanged for almost unchanged in the form of sediment in the bottom of sludge collector ponds. In the case of nitrocellulose, the presence of substituents in the cellulose, which are nitro groups, increases the conformational rigidity of the macromolecules and reduces the number of β-1,4-glycosidic bonds accessible to the enzymatic action (Brodman, BW Microbial attak of nitrocellulose / Brodman BW, Devine MP // J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 1981. V. 26. No. 3. P. 997-1000). Industrial brands of nitrocellulose (with a nitrogen content of more than 10.5%) cannot serve as a source of nutrition for microorganisms of activated sludge of biological treatment plants. The absorption of carbon of nitrocellulose macromolecules by microorganisms begins with a nitrogen content of less than 7%.
Therefore, to intensify the purification, appropriate chemical treatment of nitrocellulose precipitates of special chemical production is required, which contributes to the completion of the hydrolysis of nitroester and its transformation into an accessible source of nutrition for microorganisms.
Sludge accumulator sludge handling and burning in an open area is unsafe due to the risk of uncontrolled combustion, as well as the health effects of the people involved in this operation.
An alternative to burning nitrocellulose sludge in open areas is thermal processes (utilization in furnaces, oxidation with salt melt), thermal hydrolysis, oxidation with moist air, and biodegradation. However, all these processes are either expensive or slow and have not been tested in large-scale operations, which impedes their use in industry.
A known method of processing waste nitrocellulose (US patent No. 5849984), according to which the waste nitrocellulose when heated is treated with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. As a result of acid hydrolysis, the nitrocellulose macromolecules break down to form glucose molecules. Then hydrochloric acid is separated from glucose and used for hydrolysis again. The authors of this invention propose to use glucose as an independent product or to convert glucose to ethanol by enzymatic treatment. The disadvantage of this technical solution is associated with heat consumption for heating the mixture of nitrocellulose - hydrochloric acid and insufficiently high yield (not more than 85%) of the target product - glucose, which entails the stage of purification of glucose from by-products and makes the process more expensive. In addition, when using this technical solution for processing SC sediment of sludge collectors of special chemical enterprises, even more difficult problems will arise associated with the inappropriate consumption of hydrochloric acid for its interaction with the mineral part of the precipitate and the purification of glucose from these products.
Closest to the proposed method for the treatment of sewage sludge from the production of nitrocellulose is the method according to US patent No. 3976466, in which high-nitrogen nitrocellulose (i.e., NC with a degree of substitution close to 3) is completely denied by treatment with an aqueous solution of ammonia in a molar ratio of ammonium hydroxide: nitrocellulose in in the range from 4: 1 to 26: 1, the concentration of ammonium hydroxide in the solution in the range from 5% to 30% at a temperature of the mixture of ammonium hydroxide-nitrocellulose 70-75 ° C and the processing time from 8 hours to 24 hours. As a result of this treatment, an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate and easily biodegradable organic substances is obtained. Ammonium nitrate can be separated from these substances or used in a mixture with these substances in the form of pulp and dried mass as a nitrogen fertilizer. Biodegradable organic materials do not interfere with the use of ammonium nitrate as a fertilizer.
The disadvantages of this method are as follows:
- для поддержания повышенной температуры обработки (70-75°C) смесь (раствор гидроксид аммония – нитроцеллюлоза) в течение всего времени обработки (от 8 ч до 24 ч) следует подогревать за счет подвода тепла к смеси, что подтверждается конкретными примерами воплощения способа, приведенными в его описании;- to maintain an elevated processing temperature (70-75 ° C), the mixture (ammonium hydroxide solution - nitrocellulose) should be heated during the entire treatment time (from 8 hours to 24 hours) by supplying heat to the mixture, which is confirmed by specific examples of the method embodiment, given in his description;
1978).- in the field of used concentrations of ammonium hydroxide at elevated temperature, ammonia is highly volatile, therefore, the implementation of this method on an industrial scale will require the use of devices for condensation and capture of ammonia and water vapor or the use of an autoclave, which complicates the hardware design of the process and requires additional energy costs. For example, at a temperature of 40 ° C for an aqueous solution of ammonia with a concentration of 21%, the partial pressure of ammonia is 576 mm Hg. Art. (V.A. Rabinovich, Z.Ya. Khavin. A brief chemical reference book. L., Chemistry, 1978).
The objective of the invention is to reduce energy consumption for the treatment of nitrocellulose sludge associated with maintaining an elevated temperature of a mixture of an alkaline agent-nitrocellulose solution, reducing processing time and simplifying the hardware design of the processing process.
5%.The problem is solved in that the aqueous-wet nitrocellulose precipitate is continuously loaded into an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide close to saturation with an initial temperature of 10-95 ° C, and the solution is continuously mixed with an intensity sufficient so that the sediment particles are in suspension and evenly distributed in the liquid volume, and the rate of sediment feeding into the alkaline suspension is proportional to the rate of dissolution of nitrocellulose fibers as a result of alkaline hydrolysis in this way so that the mass fraction of sediment particles in the suspension does not exceed 5%.
When introducing nitrocellulose precipitate into the alkali solution according to the proposed method, it is possible to uniformly distribute the NC particles over the liquid volume, excluding local areas of material overheating and its uncontrolled thermal decomposition; in this case, the suspension of the NC particles should be mixed with an intensity that ensures the suspended state of the NC particles in the liquid volume.
1995).The water humidity of the nitrocellulose precipitate loaded into the alkaline solution should be at least 20%, since at lower humidity the handling of nitrocellulose is dangerous due to its high sensitivity to shock and friction (V.I. Gindich. Technology of pyroxylin powders. T. 1. Cellulose nitrate production and acid recovery (Kazan, 1995).
The introduction of a water-wet nitrocellulose precipitate into a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide is accompanied by heat generation and an increase in the temperature of the mixture due to the dilution of the solution with water introduced into the mixture with the precipitate and due to the chemical decomposition of nitrocellulose under the action of alkali. The decomposition reaction of nanocrystals proceeds at the solid – liquid interface; in this case, as the macromolecule decomposes into smaller fragments, the phase interface and, accordingly, the reaction rate, the rate of heat release and heating of the mixture increase. Therefore, at too high a rate of loading the NC sediment into the alkaline mixture after a certain “hidden” period of interaction, the chemical decomposition of the NC can become violent, uncontrollable. In this regard, the feed rate of the NC precipitate into the alkaline suspension according to the proposed method should be commensurate with the rate of disappearance of the precipitate particles as a result of alkaline hydrolysis so that the mass fraction of the precipitate particles in the suspension does not exceed 5.0%: when this condition is met, the suspension temperature reaches 95 ° C (without supply of heat from an external source). In order to maintain a high temperature of the mixture due to heat loss to the external environment according to the proposed method, it is desirable to maintain the concentration of SC particles in the suspension within 4-5%. In this case, a stationary process is established in which the amount of nitrocellulose introduced into the suspension with the precipitate coincides with the amount of nitrocellulose dissolved in the alkaline solution. An indication of the completion of the processing according to the proposed method, which is associated with the consumption of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in the decomposition of nitrocellulose into sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite and low molecular weight organic substances, is to keep the suspension concentration of suspended particles in the reaction mixture at a constant level close to 5%, for a fairly long time.
To accomplish the task of the invention, the initial concentration of the alkali solution into which the NC-precipitate is introduced should be as high as possible (close to the saturation of the solution), and the humidity of the NC-sludge should be minimal (under the conditions of safe handling of the NC, the minimum permissible humidity of the NC-precipitate makes up 20 wt.%); in this case, the rate of chemical decomposition and self-heating of the SC – alkali solution will be maximum, and the resulting solution of sodium nitrate and nitrite or potassium nitrate and the decomposition products of the SC will be as concentrated as possible, which is important from the point of view of transportation costs to the consumer.
An indication of the completion of the processing according to the proposed method, which is associated with the consumption of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in the decomposition of nitrocellulose into sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite and low molecular weight organic substances, is to stop the decrease in the mass fraction of NC in the reaction suspension, which can be monitored by a standard concentration sensor for suspended fiber particles in suspension or by periodic sampling from the reaction mixture.
In order to make full use of the alkaline agent in the proposed method, a small excess of nitrocellulose should be introduced into the reaction mixture as compared with the stoichiometric ratio NC - NaOH (KOH), and upon completion of the processing process, the mixing of the reaction mixture should be stopped and the resulting liquid should be separated (solution of low molecular weight organic substances, nitrate sodium and sodium nitrite) from unreacted SC-precipitate by decantation or filtering through a filter mesh.
Specific examples of the processing of sewage sludge from the production of nitrocellulose according to the proposed method are given below.
Example 1. In a thermally insulated cylindrical vessel with a volume of 4 l of stainless steel, equipped with a propeller stirrer (rotation speed 80 rpm), a microwave sensor for the concentration of suspended fiber particles and a temperature sensor was filled with 1400 ml of a 42% NaOH solution (industrially produced caustic soda brand PP) having a temperature of 20 ° C. Then, through a funnel, a nitrocellulose precipitate, taken from the production sludge collector, was continuously loaded into the reactor with the following characteristics:
The loading rate of the NC precipitate into the mixture in the reactor was experimentally selected so that it did not exceed the rate of dissolution of the NC in an alkaline solution; thus, the accumulation of SC in the reaction mass was prevented, which could lead to its uncontrolled rapid decomposition. Periodic sampling of the reaction mixture, carried out during the entire process, as well as continuous monitoring of this indicator using a suspended solids concentration sensor, showed that the maximum concentration of fibrous product in the mixture in the reactor (item 1) within 30 minutes from the start of loading did not exceed 4-5 wt.%. Within 20 minutes from the start of loading the NC sediment into the reactor with the alkali solution, as a result of the thermal effects of diluting the concentrated alkali with water introduced into the suspension with the precipitate and the chemical decomposition reactions of the NC, the reaction mixture “self-heated” in the reactor, which was accompanied by an increase in its temperature to 95 ° C, which was further maintained in the range of 90-95 ° C due to the thermal insulation of the reactor and the above thermal effects. The total amount of water-wet SC sediment loaded into the reactor was 2516 g, or 2516 * (100-36.5) / 100 = 1598 g in terms of absolutely dry precipitate; sediment loading time was 35 minutes. Upon completion of loading the NC sediment into the reactor, the content of suspended particles in the reaction suspension was 4.6 wt.%, After which the mixture was further stirred in the reactor at 90 ° C; as a result, after 15 minutes of treatment, the content of fibrous material in the mixture decreased to 4.2 wt.% and then stopped changing. Thus, the total time of loading and processing of the SC-precipitate by the proposed method was 50 minutes.
The mixture obtained in the reactor was a dark opaque mobile fluid with fibrous particles and foreign particles in the form of sand. The liquid was separated from the precipitate by decantation, the precipitate was washed with plenty of water. Next, the fibrous material was separated from the sand by decantation and carefully dried at 105 ° C to constant weight. The mass of absolutely dry fibrous material was 190 g, the nitrogen content in it was 170.5 ml NO / g. Consequently, the fibrous material in the composition of the mixture is unreacted (due to a lack of NaOH) nitrocellulose, the remaining components of the mixture are in it in dissolved form.
[1598*(1-0,054)-190]/[1598*(1-0,054)]=0,87.The degree of nitrocellulose processing in the composition of the NC precipitate, defined as the ratio of the mass difference of the NC taken for processing and the unreacted NC to the mass of the SC taken for processing, was [1598 * (1-0,054) -190] / [1598 * (1-0,054)] = 0.87.
Separated from unreacted nitrocellulose and sand, the dark opaque mobile liquid was a solution of low molecular weight organic substances, sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite with a total concentration of 45 wt.%. (density 1.152 g / cm 3 , dynamic viscosity 2.34 mPa⋅s). The viscosity of this fluid confirms that it was a solution of low molecular weight substances. The residual NaOH in the liquid was 0.2 g / L.
