Abstract
Description
The invention relates to fiber optics, in particular to a technology for the manufacture of anisotropic single-mode optical fibers that maintain a state of polarization of radiation. Such fibers are used in various kinds of fiber-optic interferometric sensors of physical quantities.
The anisotropic single-mode optical fiber obtained by the proposed method has a cross-section in the cross section of a round core and an elliptical tension sheath, which are located inside the structural shell of quartz glass. Fiber optics having such a design have enhanced properties of conservation of polarization of light, which is ensured by the anisotropy of radial stresses due to the elliptical shape of the tensile sheath.
The method of producing anisotropic single-mode optical fibers with an elliptical straining sheath compares favorably with other methods of manufacturing optical fibers that preserve the polarization of radiation (such as “panda” or “bow tie”) and the simplicity of the manufacturing process.
The most common method for producing single-mode optical fibers with an elliptical straining sheath ("Single polarization optical fibers. Exposed cladding technique" - Applied Physics Letters, v. 33, No. 9, 1978, p. 815) includes the following basic operations:
(MCVD),- deposition of layers of a low-viscous tensile shell and core inside a quartz glass pipe by the method of modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD),
- высокотемпературное сжатие трубки в штабик - заготовку,- high-temperature compression of the tube in the staff - the workpiece,
- абразивную обработку цилиндрической заготовки на шлифовальном станке для образования плоскопараллельных поверхностей,- abrasive processing of a cylindrical workpiece on a grinding machine for the formation of plane-parallel surfaces,
- высокотемпературное кругление заготовки, при котором напрягающая оболочка принимает эллиптичную форму, и- high temperature rounding of the workpiece, in which the tensile shell takes an elliptical shape, and
- вытягивание из заготовки волокна.- drawing fiber from the preform.
This method is not economical enough and low productivity, since the operation of plane-parallel grinding of workpieces is laborious, time consuming and leads to significant losses of expensive glass melt. Moreover, the deflection of the cylindrical workpiece leads to a violation of the coaxial arrangement of the core relative to the outer diameter of the workpiece.
Closest to the proposed technical solution, a simpler method for the manufacture of anisotropic single-mode optical fibers with an elliptical straining sheath (RF Patent No. 2155359, IPC 6 G02B 6/17, 2000) was adopted as a prototype of the claimed invention. It consists in obtaining the MCVD by the method of a cylindrical billet containing a core, a low-viscous tensile shell and a structural shell made of quartz glass, cutting two grooves from the diametrically opposite sides of the billet, high-temperature rounding of the billet, and fiber drawing. In the process of rounding the workpiece, the grooves disappear, the low-viscous tensile shell takes an elliptical shape, and the core remains round. This method, improved in comparison with the previous method, allows to reduce the loss of expensive glass melt during abrasive processing and to significantly reduce the duration of the process of manufacturing blanks of optical fibers. Moreover, the localized abrasive grooving section eliminates the influence of the deflection of the workpiece on the violation of the coaxial arrangement of the core.
The disadvantage of this method is that the outer diameter of the workpiece is limited to 12 mm, which allows stretching no more than 5 km of optical fibers with a diameter of 125 μm. An increase in the diameter of the preforms increases the duration of high-temperature processes of compression of the preform and its rounding, which leads to a significant evaporation of the quartz glass of the outer shell (more than 30%). Therefore, the manufacture by this method of blanks with a diameter of more than 12 mm is impractical.
The objective of the present invention is to increase the outer diameter of the preform, reduce the mass loss of quartz glass during high-temperature operations of compression and rounding of the preform, as well as to increase the productivity of the manufacturing process of anisotropic single-mode optical fibers with an elliptical tension sheath.
100-150°C.The problem is solved by a new method of manufacturing anisotropic single-mode optical fibers with an elliptic straining sheath, which consists in obtaining MCVD by the method of a cylindrical billet containing a core, a low-viscous straining sheath, and a structural sheath made of the material of the original quartz glass tube, cutting from the diametrically opposite sides of the workpiece of two grooves, high temperature rounding the workpiece and pulling the fiber, in which, in contrast to the prototype, the original tube forming constructive (outer) shell made of quartz glass doped with additives in the form of P 2 O 5 and / or B 2 O 3 and / or F in an amount that reduces the compression temperature and rounding of the workpiece by 100-150 ° C.
It is known that small additives P 2 O 5 , B 2 O 3 and F in the amount of 1-3 mol. % lead to a significant decrease in the viscosity of quartz glass. The use of support fibers made of such glass in the MCVD technology will lead to lower temperatures (by 100-150 ° C) during compression and rounding of the workpiece, which, in turn, will reduce the weight loss due to evaporation of the glass and the possibility of increasing the diameter of the workpieces.
A decrease in the viscosity of the glass of the outer shell does not reduce the birefringence of the optical fiber due to stress anisotropy, since the core glass does not cure earlier than the material of the outer layer.
The combination of the above features and analysis of differences from the prototype according to the existing level of technology allows us to conclude about the "novelty" and "inventive step" of the new method.
Example No. 1. The outer structural shell was made in the form of a pipe by the method of external gas-phase deposition from quartz glass containing about 1 mol. % P 2 O 5 , with an outer diameter of 30 mm, a wall thickness of 3 mm and a length of 1 m.
% GeO2,- a tensile shell made of quartz glass alloyed with 18 mol. % B2O3 and about 5 mol. % GeO2,
- изолирующей оболочки из кварцевого стекла, легированного около 2 мол.% GeO2, и- an insulating shell of quartz glass doped with about 2 mol.% GeO 2 , and
The insulating shell and core are additionally doped with fluorine in an amount of ≈0.5 at.%. The compression of the tube into the head was performed in two passes of the burner at a temperature of 2000-2050 ° C. After cutting two grooves with a depth of 5 and a width of 1 mm, rounding was performed at the same temperature. The ellipticity of the tensile shell is ≈0.6. 13.5 km of anisotropic single-mode fiber with a fiber diameter of 125 μm in a single-layer epoxy acrylate coating 40-50 μm thick are stretched from a preform with a diameter of 16.3 mm and a normalized length of 0.8 m. The degree of conservation of polarization of the radiation of the working mode at a wavelength of 1.55 μm was 51 · 0 -6 m -1 , and the optical loss was ≈0.7 dB / km at a cutoff wavelength of the highest mode equal to 1.35 μm.
Massounos due to the evaporation of glass during high-temperature treatments amounted to approximately 20%. The whole process of manufacturing a workpiece with a diameter of 16.3 mm and a length of 1 meter took about 7 hours.
As a control example, by analogy with example No. 1, a blank was made, but using a KB quartz glass pipe with an outer diameter of 22 mm, a wall thickness of 2 mm, and a length of 1 meter. The compression and rounding temperature was 100 ° C higher than in the previous example. As a result, we obtained a billet with a diameter of 11 mm, from the normalized part of which a length of 0.8 m was drawn out 6 km of the fiber with characteristics close to the data for example No. 1.
Massounos due to the evaporation of glass during high-temperature treatments amounted to approximately 32%. The whole process of manufacturing a workpiece with a diameter of 11 mm took about 8 hours.
Thus, a decrease in the viscosity of the glass supporting the quartz tube allows you to increase the dimensions of the workpiece and the length of the pulled fiber while reducing the time spent on the manufacture of optical fibers of the same length.
The above information confirms the obvious industrial applicability of the proposed method for the manufacture of optical fibers that preserve the polarization of radiation.
