Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of manufacturing polymer nanocomposites on a thermoplastic binder for space, aviation, building and other structures (fiberglass, carbon fiber, organoplastics, etc.).
The strength of such products is largely determined by the strength of the binder material. It is known that the introduction of a binder in the manufacture of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites significantly increases the strength of products.
Known methods for introducing CNTs into a binder (sometimes called a matrix) in the manufacture of a nanocomposite.
For example, to uniformly distribute a predetermined amount of CNTs over the volume of a binder, special mixers with blades and pressing chambers are also used using ionization of nanoparticles (RF patent No. 2301771 of June 27, 2007). The disadvantage of such methods of mixing CNTs with a binder is the insufficiently uniform distribution of CNTs, as well as the formation of agglomerates (large stable associations) of nanoparticles. In addition, the agglomerates of the nanoparticles themselves become stress concentrators, which leads to a decrease in the strength of the nanocomposite with a certain amount of them.
The closest is a method of manufacturing a polymer / carbon nanotube composite (RF patent No. 2400462 dated 09/27/2010), in which ultrasonic treatment of the mixture is used to evenly distribute the nanoparticles. Ultrasonic exposure provides a more uniform distribution throughout the matrix and, consequently, an increase in strength characteristics for these specific CNTs. This is due to the fact that nanoparticles, participating in the formation of a supramolecular polymer structure, through it positively affect the properties of the formed material. Entering into communication with molecules of a binder, in particular a polyester binder, CNTs retain their integrity and their high strength and other mechanical characteristics, and give high strength properties to a nanocomposite.
As a result of numerous studies, it was noted that the sequential introduction of CNTs into the polyester matrix to a certain concentration leads to a decrease in the viscosity of the resulting nanosuspension. The decrease in viscosity is explained by the corresponding effect of nanoparticles on the segmental mobility of polymer macromolecules. Exceeding this concentration characterizes the beginning of a decrease in the strength characteristics of polymerized samples due to the appearance of agglomerates, which characterizes an excessive concentration of CNTs and, as a result, a change in the repulsive forces of CNTs to attractive forces during forced ultrasonic compaction. Agglomeration of an excess amount of CNTs in the range above the optimum concentration leads to the cessation of the decrease in viscosity and a sharp decrease in the strength characteristics of polymerized samples, which gives the right to consider CNT agglomerates as stress concentrators. The formation of agglomerates practically means the appearance of many stress concentrators, which lead to a deterioration in strength characteristics, which has been repeatedly proved experimentally. Due to the nanoscale dispersible nanoparticles in excess of a certain concentration under the action of inter-molecular forces of van der Waals interaction, there is a moment of agglomeration of CNTs. This condition depends on the number of CNTs, their individual characteristics (diameter, length, number of layers, specific surface area, etc.) and parameters of ultrasonic radiation (frequency, amplitude, density of ultrasonic radiation, etc.).
However, in the prototype method, the magnitude of the input amount of CNTs, and, consequently, the concentration in nanosuspension is determined in advance, and therefore it is not known how close it will be to the optimum.
The objective of the invention is to achieve the highest possible strength of the binder by introducing the optimal amount of CNTs into the binder, in which the mechanical properties (primarily strength) of the obtained nanocomposite are the highest.
1.The dependence of the strength characteristics of the polymer binder (for example, a polyester binder) and its viscosity on the concentration of CNTs after their introduction and ultrasonic mixing in the preparation is shown in figure 1.
The graphs of these quantities are individual in nature depending on each batch of CNTs and the properties of the binder. Therefore, it is not possible to determine in advance the necessary concentration of CNTs corresponding to the maximum strength of the manufactured nanocomposite. However, the fundamental regularity is the same in all cases, namely: the minimum value of the viscosity of nanosuspension corresponds to the maximum strength of the polymerized binder, and, accordingly, the nanocomposite based on it. Consequently, the optimal concentration of nanoparticles to which it can be increased in order to uniformly distribute the nanoparticles without agglomeration and, therefore, to obtain maximum strength characteristics, can be determined by attaining the nanosuspension viscosity of its minimum value by sequentially introducing step doses of CNTs and then measuring the viscosity of the resulting suspension. This corresponds to the state when the next viscosity measurement gives a value equal to or greater than the previous one. A further increase in the number of CNTs leads to a decrease in the strength of the resulting nanocomposite. The magnitude of the step dose of CNTs is selected based on considerations of accuracy in determining the optimal concentration of CNTs, and is in the range of 0.001 ... 0.010% by weight of the binder. In addition, the initial dose can be taken initially multiple times more than this value, if the extremum region is far from zero. This is done on the basis of experience and in order to start measuring viscosity in the region close to the extremum of the minimum viscosity.
The specified method is implemented as follows.
In the experiments, multilayer carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were used, which have the following individual characteristics: external diameter 15.0–40.0 nm, length ≥2 μm, number of layers 5–8,
The curing of the polyester resin was carried out at room temperature. The preforms were heat-treated (post-cured) at 80 ° C for 3 hours. Bending tests of the samples were carried out on a
It should be noted that the implementation of the method was carried out in the study of the properties of the polyester binder, which has significant technological advantages over other thermosets (epoxy, phenolic, etc.). The main advantage is the possibility of programming the start time of gelation as the first stage of polymerization. In addition, the viscosity of polyesters is much lower, which allows dispersing CNTs directly into the resin, bypassing the sol-gel stage, which plasticizes the binder and, therefore, permanently distorts the obtained strength characteristics. A positive effect is exerted by the advantage in the polymerization mode, which consists in the fact that the polymerization occurs between the styrene monomer and the resin, which together make up 99% of the binder. The polymerization process is initiated by only 1% of the MEKP type catalyst (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide), which is not a participant in the reaction and, therefore, does not affect the homogeneity of nanodispersion.
Using the example of a polyester binder, it is possible to determine the basic laws of behavior of any other thermosetting polymer binder after the introduction of CNTs. The application of the described method for other types of thermosetting binder is possible provided that the appropriate technological conditions are provided that prevent premature polymerization, in order to measure the viscosity of nanosuspension before polymerization.
A polyester binder can be recommended as a reference medium for determining the optimal concentration of CNTs of a particular manufacturer without determining their averaged individual characteristics.
The use of the obtained nano-modified binder for the manufacture of composite products is carried out without changing the subsequent stages of the technological process of their manufacture, such as uniform mixing with a catalyst, impregnation of various reinforcing materials, followed by polymerization at room temperature and subsequent post-cure.
