Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of chemistry of platinum metals, in particular to the production of palladium, used as a starting material, for the industrial production of solutions of palladium nitrate for the synthesis of other palladium compounds, for example, for the synthesis of palladium acetate.
A known method of producing palladium powder, based on heating an oxidized palladium sponge in a nitrogen-ammonia medium, which serves as a protective medium until the dispersed metal is cooled (RF Patent No. 2186863). The initial palladium sponge was obtained by calcining trans- [Pd (NH 3 ) 2 Cl 2 ] to temperatures of 800-900 ° C in an air atmosphere. The temperature at the stage of restoration of the sponge is maintained within 200-500 ° C, cooling in a protective environment is carried out to 150-50 ° C. The disadvantage of this method is to obtain a palladium powder with a partially oxidized surface, which negatively affects the solubility in nitric acid and the quality of the resulting solution of palladium nitrate. When dissolving the obtained palladium powder in nitric acid, 10-20% of the metal remains insoluble due to the passivated surface. The addition of hydrochloric acid at the rate of 50 ml per kilogram of metal (adding more hydrochloric acid leads to the formation of PdCl 2 , sparingly soluble in one stripped off nitric acid solution) increases the solubility, but not until complete dissolution. In this regard, such a solution of palladium nitrate must be filtered, which is a continuous operation due to the high dispersion of the precipitate. Another disadvantage of dissolving palladium in nitric acid in the presence of hydrochloric acid is the formation of nitrosyl compounds, which are stabilized in the presence of chloride ions. The presence of nitrosyl compounds can significantly affect the quality of the palladium nitrate solution and, subsequently, cause the occurrence of adverse reactions.
A known method of producing metallic palladium by reducing palladium oxide with liquid alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol or n-butanol (Japanese Patent No. 6145827). The disadvantage of this method is the formation of palladium powders with high chemical activity, which leads to the passivation of their surface. Therefore, the interaction of powders with nitric acid leads only to their partial dissolution. However, the production of such powders in industrial quantities is not safe, since the resulting powder can be a catalyst for the ignition of alcohol vapors in an air atmosphere.
A known method of producing spherical palladium powders by reducing aqueous solutions of [Pd (NH 3 ) 4 ] Cl 2 in the presence of ammonium chloride and certain surfactants with hydrazine at a solution pH of 5.5 to 9 (Japanese Patent No. 6145727). The disadvantage of this method is the formation of metallic palladium in an alkaline or neutral environment, which causes passivation of the metal surface. When interacting with nitric acid, this leads to incomplete solubility of palladium. The use of surfactants is also a disadvantage for soluble material, since it requires longer washing of the metal powder or its annealing. The interaction of surfactants with nitric acid and a solution of palladium nitrate leads to the oxidation of surfactants and can be accompanied by the formation of various nitro-organic compounds, which can also affect the quality of the product obtained from the nitric acid solution. Annealing of the material to remove surfactants leads to surface oxidation and an increase in the passivation layer on the metal surface, which leads to incomplete dissolution of palladium in nitric acid.
Known methods for producing a palladium powder that is resistant to oxidation by reducing aqueous solutions of [Pd (NH 3 ) 4 ] Cl 2 in the presence of ammonium chloride and certain surfactants by various reducing agents, isolating the formed metal and calcining it under certain temperature conditions at atmospheric pressure or under pressure ( Japanese Patents Nos. 6299211 and 6299212). The disadvantage of this method is the formation of palladium powders with a partially oxidized surface, which is even more passivated by holding the powders at elevated temperatures. Such material is only partially soluble in nitric acid.
A known method of producing metallic palladium by restoring a neutralized aqueous solution of ammonium chloropaladate with hydrochloric acid hydrazine at pH≥2 or formic acid at pH≥6, followed by filtration, washing and drying of the obtained metal at 90-100 ° C (RF Patent No. 2254387). The disadvantage of this method is the formation of a metal with a partially oxidized surface, due to which the interaction with nitric acid is characterized by its incomplete dissolution. Drying the material at elevated temperatures contributes to even greater passivation, which reduces the solubility in nitric acid.
A known method of producing a powder of metallic palladium by reducing trans- [Pd (NH 3 ) 2 Cl 2 ] in a mixture with metallic palladium (1-10 g of a palladium compound - 1-10 mg of palladium black) with hydrogen in an air mixture at 20-25 ° C within 7-10 minutes and the ratio of the volumes of hydrogen and air supplied (V (Н 2 ) / V (air)), equal to 1 / 0.5-2 (Copyright certificate SU No. 1748953). The disadvantage of this method is the use of hydrogen, since industrial work with it, in the presence of an active catalyst for its ignition, requires special safety measures.
A known laboratory method for producing palladium black for dissolution in nitric acid by reducing palladium chloride with sodium borohydride (Kozitsyna N.Yu., Martens M.V., Stolyarov I.P. et al. // Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. 1999. No. 11. C .1920-1927). The disadvantage of this method is the incomplete dissolution of palladium metal in nitric acid upon receipt of the metal in industrial quantities. Since the formation of palladium black occurs as an active reducing agent, this leads to the formation of a metal surface that is not resistant to passivation in the air and in a solution of concentrated nitric acid. The use of NaBH 4 also leads to the formation of boric acid in the reduction products, which requires more thorough washing of the black, as the content of boron impurities in the target products is often very limited.
(Bakhmutov V.I., Berry J.F., Cotton F.A. et al. // Dalton Trans. 2005. P.1989-1992). A known laboratory method for producing a metal powder of palladium for dissolution in nitric acid by reducing a solution of PdCl 2 (0.5 g, 11.7 mmol) in 50 ml of water with a mixture of sodium hydroxide (1.0 g, 25 mmol) and sodium formate (0.8 g, 11.7 mmol), s then keeping the metal formed until it coagulates with stirring for 30 minutes, filtering the metal, washing it in water and acetone, and drying under vacuum (Bakhmutov VI, Berry JF, Cotton FA et al. // Dalton Trans. 2005. P.1989 -1992). The disadvantage of this method is the incomplete dissolution of palladium metal in nitric acid upon receipt of the metal in industrial quantities. Since the formation of black occurs in an alkaline environment, this does not exclude the formation of a passivated surface. To obtain a pure metal, alkali removal is necessary, which requires plentiful and prolonged washing with water. At the same time, acetone is used to dry the metal, which is unacceptable for industrial production of metal, since it can lead to ignition of acetone vapor over the black.
A known method of producing a metal powder of palladium by restoring a suspension of trans- [Pd (NH 3 ) 2 Cl 2 ] at a temperature of 80-90 ° C with a mixture of concentrated aqueous solutions of formic acid and ammonia at a mass ratio of HCOOH / NH 3 * H 2 O of at least 1 /0.3, with stirring and pH 6 (RF Patent No. 2136769). The disadvantage of this method is to obtain a palladium powder with a partially passivated surface, which when interacting with nitric acid is not stable leads to its complete dissolution.
A known method of producing palladium nitrate in which the original palladium black is obtained by reducing the palladium compound in suspension with a reducing agent - a solution of hydroxylamine hydrochloride with a concentration of 15 g / l and with a ratio of solid / liquid - 1 / (2-3), with decantation of the resulting black in water with a palladium / water ratio of 1/2 (RF Patent No. 2242429). This method is adopted as a prototype.
The disadvantage of this method is the increased chemical activity of the resulting black, which is the reason for its partial passivation both in air before dissolution and in concentrated nitric acid. Therefore, dissolution in nitric acid is carried out in the presence of hydrochloric acid, which impairs the quality of the resulting solution of palladium nitrate by the presence of nitrosating agents in it. At the same time, the disadvantage of this method is also a poor washing of palladium black, since decantation does not allow almost complete removal of soluble reaction products, which causes contamination of the resulting palladium nitrate solution with additional chloride ions.
The technical result, to which the present invention is directed, is stable and easy to obtain palladium, almost completely soluble in nitric acid, safe in a clean air atmosphere and resistant to passivation in air without additional heating and in concentrated nitric acid when dissolved.
The desired technical result is achieved by restoring an acetic acid or formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 powder with a concentrated (20-50)% aqueous solution of sodium formate or (20-70)% aqueous solution of ammonium formate at a temperature of (50-110) ° C in the amount of ( 110-150)% of the molar amount of palladium. In this case, sodium or ammonium formate solutions are pre-acidified with concentrated formic acid or glacial acetic acid to a pH value of (3-5) and heated to (50-110) ° C. Acetic acid is used to suspend PdCl 2 in the form of (70-100)% aqueous solution in an amount of (200-400)% of the molar amount of palladium or formic acid in the form of (60-95)% aqueous solution in an amount of (200 -400)% of the molar amount of palladium. When using formic acid as a suspending liquid, the consumption of a reducing agent, sodium or ammonium formate, is (50-100)% of the molar amount of palladium.
The essence of the method lies in the fact that the restoration of palladium to a metallic state is carried out in acidic and / or slightly acidic media with a reducing agent of medium activity. The choice of reducing agent is based on the formation of palladium mobile, resistant to passivation by atmospheric oxygen and concentrated nitric acid. In the presence of an active reducing agent (for example: sodium borohydride, hydrazine or hydroxylamine), the formation of chemically active palladium black occurs, which, when reacted with atmospheric oxygen or nitric acid, forms a passivation (oxide) layer or local areas on the surface, which makes it difficult to completely dissolve such black. To prevent the formation of an active surface for passivation, a formate ion is suitable as a reducing agent. Since its reducing ability increases in an alkaline environment and since in the presence of bases passivation of palladium black is possible, the process of reducing palladium is carried out in acidic and slightly acidic environments.
Due to the fact that palladium black exhibits catalytic activity and is able to actively interact with a number of substances with the release of gaseous products, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of "foaming" of the solution and removal of the substance from the reactor when it is received. In order to prevent strong gas evolution in the presence of formic acid, the reduction process is carried out by suspending the palladium compound with a concentrated solution, which does not allow the resulting black (before coagulation) to form a surface layer enriched in the evolving gases. Therefore, the introduction of reagents in the proposed process is carried out, if possible, in a concentrated state.
An important role in the formation of the non-oxidized surface of palladium is played by the absence of excess water in the reduction system, which due to its hydrolytic properties can cause passivation. If the reduction process is carried out in a solution excessively diluted with water, then conditions are created for the passivation of the resulting surface of the reduced palladium. Therefore, to prevent oxidation of the surface of the resulting palladium black, the reduction process is also, if possible, implemented in a concentrated system.
In the course of the studies, it was found that for the process of obtaining palladium soluble in nitric acid, the reduction of PdCl 2 with sodium or ammonium formate in an acidic and slightly acidic medium, the optimal conditions are:
- температура восстановления суспензии PdCl2 раствором формиата натрия или аммония - (50-110)°C;- the recovery temperature of the suspension of PdCl 2 with a solution of sodium formate or ammonium - (50-110) ° C;
- количество уксусной или муравьиной кислоты, образующих суспензию с PdCl2, - (200-400)% от мольного количества палладия в исходном соединении (в случае применения восстановителя - формиата натрия или аммония);- the amount of acetic or formic acid, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , - (200-400)% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound (in the case of using a reducing agent, sodium or ammonium formate);
- количество муравьиной кислоты, образующих суспензию с PdCl2, - (200-500)% от мольного количества палладия в исходном соединении (в случае применения восстановителя - муравьиной кислоты с добавлением аммиака);- the amount of formic acid, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , - (200-500)% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound (in the case of using a reducing agent, formic acid with the addition of ammonia);
- содержание уксусной кислоты в водном растворе, образующих суспензию с PdCl2, - (70-100)%;- the content of acetic acid in an aqueous solution, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , - (70-100)%;
- содержание муравьиной кислоты в водном растворе, образующих суспензию с PdCl2, - (60-95)%;- the content of formic acid in an aqueous solution, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , - (60-95)%;
- количество формиата натрия или аммония при восстановлении уксуснокислой суспензии PdCl2 - (110-150)% от мольного количества палладия в исходном соединении;- the amount of sodium or ammonium formate upon reduction of the acetic acid suspension of PdCl 2 - (110-150)% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound;
- количество формиата натрия или аммония при восстановлении муравьинокислой суспензии PdCl2 - (50-100)% от мольного количества палладия в исходном соединении;- the amount of sodium or ammonium formate during the reduction of the formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 - (50-100)% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound;
- содержание формиата натрия в исходном водном растворе - (20-50)%;- the content of sodium formate in the initial aqueous solution is (20-50)%;
- содержание формиата аммония в исходном водном растворе - (20-70)%;- the content of ammonium formate in the initial aqueous solution is (20-70)%;
- значение pH раствора восстановителя (формиата натрия или аммония, подкисленного муравьиной или уксусной кислотой) - (3-5);- the pH value of the solution of the reducing agent (sodium or ammonium formate, acidified with formic or acetic acid) - (3-5);
- значение pH при восстановлении PdCl2 в муравьинокислой суспензии с добавлением аммиака - (3-5);- the pH value during the reduction of PdCl 2 in formic acid suspension with the addition of ammonia - (3-5);
- начальная температура водного раствора формиата натрия или аммония - (50-110)°C;- the initial temperature of an aqueous solution of sodium formate or ammonium - (50-110) ° C;
PdCl2 - (5-15)%.- the ammonia content in the aqueous solution to neutralize the formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 - (5-15)%.
An increase in the reaction temperature of a suspension of PdCl 2 with a solution of sodium or ammonium formate above 110 ° C can be accompanied by a partial oxidation of the resulting palladium black, which leads to its incomplete dissolution in nitric acid. This increase in temperature also leads to boiling of the suspension, which can lead to spraying of the reaction mass. Lowering the reaction temperature of the suspension of PdCl 2 with a solution of sodium or ammonium formate below 50 ° C slows down the recovery process, which increases the duration of the process.
An increase in the amount of acetic or formic acid in a suspension with PdCl 2 more than 400% of the molar amount of palladium (in the case of the use of a reducing agent - sodium formate or ammonium) leads to excessive consumption of reagents. A decrease in the amount of acetic or formic acid in a suspension with PdCl 2 of less than 200% of the molar amount of palladium (in the case of a reducing agent, sodium or ammonium formate) leads to insufficient impregnation of the initial palladium compound, which leads to its "clumping", which may cause incomplete recovery.
An increase in the amount of formic acid in suspension with PdCl 2 more than 500% of the molar amount of palladium (in the case of the use of a reducing agent - formic acid with the addition of ammonia) leads to excessive consumption of reagents. A decrease in the amount of formic acid in a suspension with PdCl 2 of less than 200% of the molar amount of palladium (in the case of the use of a reducing agent - formic acid with the addition of ammonia) leads to insufficient impregnation of the original palladium compound, which leads to its "clumping", which may cause incomplete recovery .
A decrease in the content of acetic acid in the aqueous solution, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , of less than 70% leads to dilution of the reaction system with water and, as a result, causes the solution to “foaming” in the process of palladium reduction, which can lead to the removal of material from the reactor. Dilution of the reduction system can also lead to passivation of the surface of the reducing metal, which causes incomplete dissolution in nitric acid.
An increase in the content of formic acid in the aqueous solution, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , of more than 95% leads to an increase in the cost of the process, since it requires special dehydration of the standard commercial reagent - formic acid or to use the more expensive - anhydrous. Moreover, a more concentrated acid has a greater volatility, which increases its loss due to evaporation during suspension and recovery, and also increases the risk of a chemical burn. The decrease in the formic acid content in the aqueous solution, forming a suspension with PdCl 2 , less than 60% leads to dilution of the recovery solution, which can cause passivation of the surface of the formed metal and its incomplete dissolution in nitric acid. The use of a more dilute solution of formic acid leads to the foaming of the solution during the reduction of palladium, which may lead to the removal of material from the reactor.
An increase in the amount of sodium formate or ammonium formate upon reduction of the acetic acid suspension of PdCl 2 with more than 150% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound leads to excessive consumption of reagents. A decrease in the amount of sodium formate or ammonium formate upon reduction of the acetic acid suspension of PdCl 2 to less than 110% of the molar amount of palladium in the starting compound may lead to a lack of a reducing agent and incomplete reduction of palladium.
An increase in the amount of sodium or ammonium formate during the reduction of the formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 more than 100% of the molar amount of palladium leads to excessive consumption of reagents. A decrease in the amount of sodium or ammonium formate during the reduction of the formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 to less than 50% of the molar amount of palladium can lead to a lack of a reducing agent, which leads to incomplete reduction of palladium.
An increase in the content of sodium formate in an aqueous solution of a reducing agent of more than 50% leads to its incomplete dissolution up to the boiling points of the solution, which may lead to its lack in the recovery system of the palladium compound. A decrease in the content of sodium formate in an aqueous solution of a reducing agent of less than 20% leads to a dilution of the solution with water, which causes the solution to “foaming” during the reduction of palladium, which can lead to the removal of material from the reactor. The use of a more dilute solution of sodium formate can also cause passivation of the surface of the formed metal and incomplete dissolution of the metal in nitric acid.
An increase in the content of ammonium formate in an aqueous solution of a reducing agent of more than 70% leads to an increase in the density of the solution, which leads to a reduction process in a viscous solution, which complicates the averaging of the reduction in suspension. Because of this, local effects of the formation of a passivated metal surface may occur, which, when the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, leads to incomplete dissolution. A decrease in the content of ammonium formate in an aqueous solution of a reducing agent of less than 20% leads to a dilution of the solution with water, which can cause passivation of the metal surface during its formation, and, as a result, its incomplete dissolution in nitric acid. The use of a more dilute solution of ammonium formate also leads to foaming of the solution in the process of palladium reduction, which can lead to the removal of material from the reactor.
Raising the temperature of an aqueous solution of sodium or ammonium formate above 110 ° C is limited by the difficulty of adding a hotter solution to the palladium reduction slurry. Lowering the temperature of an aqueous solution of sodium or ammonium formate below 50 ° C slows down the recovery, which increases the duration of the process.
An increase in the pH value of the reducing agent solution (sodium or ammonium formate acidified with formic or acetic acid) above 5 can cause partial passivation of the metal during reduction, which, when dissolved in nitric acid, leads to incomplete dissolution. A decrease in the pH value of the reducing agent solution (sodium or ammonium formate acidified with formic or acetic acid) below 3 causes a decrease in the reducing ability of formate ions, which can lead to incomplete reduction of palladium.
An increase in pH during reduction of PdCl 2 in an formic acid suspension with the addition of ammonia above 5 may cause partial passivation of the metal during reduction, which, when dissolved in nitric acid, leads to incomplete dissolution. A decrease in pH during the reduction of PdCl 2 in an formic acid suspension with the addition of ammonia below 3 causes a decrease in the reduction ability of formate ions, which can lead to incomplete reduction of palladium.
An increase in the ammonia content in an aqueous solution to neutralize a PdCl 2 formic acid suspension of more than 15% can lead to a local formation of an alkaline solution and cause partial passivation of the surface of the formed metal, which when it is dissolved in nitric acid causes incomplete dissolution. A decrease in the ammonia content in the aqueous solution to neutralize the formic acid suspension of PdCl 2 less than 5% leads to an increase in water activity, which is accompanied by hydrolysis, which initiates the passivation of the surface of the recovered palladium. Dilution also leads to a decrease in the coagulating ability of palladium black, which, under conditions of intense gas evolution, leads to “foaming” of the solution in the recovery process, which may be accompanied by the removal of material from the reactor.
An example implementation of the method.
Фильтрованные растворы, после определения содержания палладия, направляли на доизвлечение палладия или сливали (в зависимости от результата анализа).A certain mass of PdCl 2 was suspended with a certain amount of glacial acetic acid or with its aqueous concentrated solution or with a certain amount of an aqueous solution of formic acid, and the suspension was heated to a certain temperature. Under stirring, a certain amount of an aqueous solution of sodium or ammonium formate, acidified with formic acid to a certain pH, was poured portionwise into the suspension obtained with stirring. After the addition of the entire solution of sodium or ammonium formate, the resulting suspension was kept under stirring at a given temperature until a clear solution was formed and coagulated reduced palladium. Then, the obtained clear solution with precipitate was cooled to a temperature of 20–40 ° C, discharged onto a filter, the precipitate was filtered off, washed with distilled water, and squeezed. The obtained wet metal was sent for dissolution in nitric acid or for storage in a desiccator with a desiccant. Filtered solutions, after determining the palladium content, were sent to further extract palladium or drained (depending on the result of the analysis).
