Abstract
Description
The invention relates to processes and apparatus for producing high purity silicon.
A known method of cleaning metallurgical silicon, containing about 1% of impurities, by crushing into pieces, obtaining a powdery material with a grain size of less than 100 microns, chemical etching in alkaline and acid solutions, washing and drying (see US patent No. 4241037, class C01B 33 / 02, 1979). The result is a silicon powder with a purity of 99.99% and higher with a developed surface prone to oxidation, the specific gravity of the powder is much lower than the density of monolithic silicon, which complicates the process of fusion of the powder and obtaining the ingot.
A known method of fusing powdered silicon by adding a binder material, for example silica sol and pellet pellet pressing (see patent WO 2007/005729). The obtained granules are heated in an oven in a reducing atmosphere to 1600 ° C, where a silicon melt is obtained, and after cooling, an ingot is obtained. The disadvantage of this method is the introduction into silicon powder of an additional material - a binder, which increases the complexity of manufacturing a silicon ingot and leads to contamination of silicon.
As a prototype, the selected method of producing pellets of pellets 10-20 mm in size weighing 1-3 g, using silicon powder with a particle size of 10 to 100 microns and a pressure of 10,000 newton (see US patent No. 7175685). The granules are loaded into a quartz crucible and annealed in a vacuum oven at 1350 ° C, and then fused at a temperature of 1600 ° C. The disadvantage of the prototype is the need to use a powder of a certain size, intermediate operations before fusion, expensive equipment and, as a result, the relatively high complexity of the process of fusion of silicon powder into an ingot.
The objective of the invention is to reduce the complexity of the process of fusing the powder into a silicon ingot.
The technical result is achieved by the fact that in the method of producing silicon ingots from silicon powder by melting silicon in a crucible and purifying it, followed by directed crystallization in a cooled crucible, silicon powder in a flow of carrier gas is transported through holes in the bottom region into the crucible and passed through a layer of molten silicon .
Further purification of the silicon powder is achieved by using a humidified gas, such as nitrogen, as the carrier gas.
An additional increase in the productivity of the process and a decrease in the complexity is achieved by the fact that the silicon melt is maintained at a temperature above 1600 ° C.
The proposed fusion method is applicable practically to powders of any size, with different thicknesses of the oxide coating. The process can go on continuously. Silicon powder enters the crucible with molten silicon in the bottom region through many evenly distributed holes. The carrier gas provides the transportation of the powder into the melt in the form of many small bubbles that acquire the temperature of the molten volume of silicon. Powder particles inside the bubbles heat up, melt and replenish the volume of molten silicon. Through a drain hole, molten silicon enters a cooled crucible, which can be used as an apparatus for producing multisilicon ingots by directional crystallization.
The use of moistened nitrogen or oxygen as a carrier gas is accompanied by the interaction of oxidizable impurities contained in the initial powder and their volatilization from the bulk of silicon together with the carrier gas. As a result, simultaneously with fusion, additional purification takes place to obtain high-quality silicon ingots.
An increase in the productivity of the fusion process is achieved by using an overheated melt to a temperature above 1600 ° C, when the viscosity of the silicon melt decreases and small gas bubbles are produced in it.
The proposed manufacturing method is confirmed by the following manufacturing example.
A ceramic crucible with bottom channels was used to pass gas. The crucible was filled with molten silicon with a temperature of about 1650 ° C and started to pass through a layer of molten silicon about 50 cm thick jet of nitrogen under pressure with a content of about 5% water. Then, silicon powder with a particle size of 10 to 100 μm was introduced into the nitrogen stream. All the powder passed into molten silicon and a silicon ingot obtained after cooling. Over time, the formation of a slag crust in the form of silicon oxides formed on the surface of grains of silicon powder was observed on the surface of the melt. The purity of the obtained ingot exceeded the purity of the initial silicon powder, which allows using this method to obtain solar-grade silicon for solar cells.
