Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the creation of laser materials used as an optical medium to obtain stimulated emission.
Single crystals based on fluorides of alkali, alkaline earth and rare earth metals are known (Handbook of Lasers. Ed. A.M. Prokhorov. - M .: "Soviet Radio", 1978, v.1, 504 S.). Upon receipt of laser single crystals, they are doped with activators - transition and rare-earth metal ions.
However, growing large single crystals with a high dopant concentration and high optical quality is a technically challenging task.
(RU 2321120, 27.03.2008).Known laser material from fluoride ceramics formed in the form of a homogeneous solid solution from a mixture of alkaline earth metal fluorides as a base and with a dopant in the form of one or more fluorides from the group of rare earth metals capable of forming a homogeneous solid solution with a fluorite structure with the base, in the following molar ratio: base - 50-99, dopant - 1-50, while the initial mixture contains components with an excess of fluorine introduced into them (RU 2321120, 03/27/2008).
A disadvantage of the known material is the complexity of the technology, a limited range of materials, the difficulty of achieving the required quality of surface treatment.
(RU 2326994, 20.06.2008).Known laser materials, which are crystalline powders based on zinc oxide, which are obtained as follows. The cellulose carrier is impregnated with a ZnO precursor, an aqueous solution of an organic acid zinc salt, and then the carrier is subjected to high-temperature pyrolysis, and a paper-free paper filter is used as a cellulose carrier (RU 2326994, 06/20/2008).
(US 6656588, 02.12.2003).Activated nanosized particles of metal oxides are known that exhibit stimulated emission and cw laser emission when excited by electron beams, as well as luminescent powders, which are a mixture of metal oxides, one of which is a transition or rare-earth oxide with a particle size of less than 500 nm (US 6656588, 12/02/2003).
Nanoscale materials have advantages over solid-state lasers based on single crystals, not only because of a simpler technology for their manufacture, but also because of the lack of the need to use an expensive external optical resonator for laser generation.
Spectral and temporal measurements of laser action of rhodamine 640 dye in strongly scattering media // Opt. Lett. 1994. V.19. P.1922).Laser materials are also known, which are scattering particles of titanium and zinc oxides introduced into a dye solution (Sha WL, Liu C.-H., Alfano RR Spectral and temporal measurements of laser action of rhodamine 640 dye in strongly scattering media // Opt. Lett. 1994. V. 19. P. 1922).
However, the disadvantage of this material is the rapid bleaching of the dye, although the introduction of nanoparticles as scattering centers slows down the bleaching process.
(RU 2209188, 27.07.2003).A material based on dye-activated glass and obtained by sol-gel technology is also known. The resulting glass in the form of a plate with a thickness of 2 mm with an end face size of 10 × 15 mm 2 was dried and processed by traditional optical methods. The obtained sample withstood optical processing without damage and was tested as an active element of a solid-state laser (RU 2209188, 07.27.2003).
(US 7094361, 22.08.2006).Known luminescent transparent nanocomposite materials containing an inert matrix and active inorganic nanoparticles with a size of 1-100 nm. This material is optically transparent in the field of excitation and luminescence of active ions contained in the matrix (US 7094361, 08/22/2006).
However, only spontaneous emission (luminescence, fluorescence, phosphorescence) of nanoparticles is used in the known material. No known property of laser generation or amplification of light was found in the known material.
Known material containing inorganic crystalline nanoparticles placed in a transparent medium with linear optical properties, while the nanoparticles consist of a core containing absorbing centers, such as impurities or defects. The shell and core of the nanoparticle are made of one material. When laser radiation acts on a nonlinear optical medium in the shell of a nanoparticle containing defects, the photogeneration of nonequilibrium electrons begins from the impurity band into the conduction band. A change in the carrier concentration leads to the appearance of a nonlinear additive to the refractive index and absorption of the shell. When carriers are photogenerated, a concentration gradient arises between the shell and the nucleus, and their diffusion into the nucleus begins. As a result, the dielectric constant of the nanoparticle changes, which leads to a change in its absorption and scattering cross sections (RU 2267145, 02.20.2005) - a prototype.
Known material is recommended for the protection of photodetectors from being blinded by high-intensity laser radiation and for creating low-threshold optical switches.
The present invention is to develop a nanocomposite optical material with specified values of the lifetime of the upper laser level to improve the characteristics of laser generation and light amplification.
19.The problem is solved by the described optical laser material containing solid-state nanoparticles in an inert medium transparent in the optical region, and it contains dielectric or semiconductor material activated by luminescent ions as nanoparticles, while the nanoparticles have a size smaller than the luminescence wavelength and are uniformly distributed in continuous isotropic dielectric inert medium, while the ratio of the refractive index of the nanoparticle n cr to the refractive index of the inert n med environments are set in the range (1.01-3.5), while the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the medium is (0.001-0.7), and the material is characterized by the ratio of the product of the radiation lifetime of the upper laser level in the nanocomposite to its value in the massive crystal equal from 1.07 to 19.
The problem is also solved by the described method for producing an optical laser material by distributing solid-state nanoparticles in an inert medium transparent in the optical region, and dielectric or semiconductor material activated by luminescent ions is used as nanoparticles, while the nanoparticles are smaller than the luminescence wavelength, and uniformly distributed in a continuous isotropic dielectric inert medium, while the ratio of the refractive index of the nanoparticle n cr to the refractive index of an inert medium n med and the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the said medium is set taking into account a given value ( ) according to a series of calibration curves for various degrees of filling the medium with nanoparticles, shown in Fig. 1, where the X axis represents the ratios of the refractive index of the nanoparticle to the refractive index of the medium (n cr / n med ) and the Y axis represents the ratios of the radiation lifetime of the upper laser level in a nanocomposite to its value in a massive crystal Where - radiation lifetime of the upper laser level in the nanocomposite and - radiation lifetime of the upper laser level in a massive crystal.
Preferably, the nanoparticle size of the dielectric or semiconductor material is 10-300 nm.
Nanoparticles of a dielectric or semiconductor material preferably have a spherical shape.
The nanoparticles of the dielectric material used in the method for producing the laser material are inorganic compounds doped with rare earth and / or transition metal ions, selected from oxides, salts of oxygen-containing acids, sulfides, selenides, halides.
Nanoparticles of a dielectric or semiconductor material can be either crystalline or glassy.
The dielectric medium may be a gas, a liquid, or a solid polymer, glassy, or crystalline material.
The invention in the scope of the claimed combination of features provides an increase in the lifetime of a metastable level in laser media, which allows to increase the pump duration by several times, reduce the power and cost of a laser pump source, and reduce losses while conserving energy and output radiation power.
For example, with n cr = 1.82 (YAG), a five-fold increase in the lifetime is ensured, which, with the same pump power, makes it possible to increase the accumulated inversion in a laser generator or amplifier by a factor of 5 and, as a result, reduces the cost and simplifies the laser system.
Figure 1 presents a series of calibration curves with various factors filling the medium with nanoparticles, using which you can optimize the value to create the maximum inverse population at the upper laser level.
14-20 (2008)].To construct the calibration curves, the following formulas were used [K.K.Pukhov, T.T. Basiev, Yu.V. Orlovsky. Spontaneous emission in dielectric nanoparticles, Letters in JETP, No. 88 (issue 1), pp. 14-20 (2008)].
(2).A comparison of the calculations with the obtained experimental results confirmed that the characteristics of the stimulated emission of nanoparticles significantly differ from the characteristics of a bulk crystal. The decay time of the luminescence kinetics of nanoparticles measured in air (n med ≈1), determined at the far stage of the nonexponential luminescence kinetics, turned out to be τ fin = 577 μs (Fig. 2, curve 1). The decay time of the 4 F 3/2 level at the far stage of kinetics turned out to be 1.7 times longer than the decay time in a bulk crystal (Fig. 2, curve 3), which is in qualitative agreement with formulas (1) and (2). The same nanoparticles were placed in a drop of medical vaseline (n med = 1.47), which was placed on the experimental table without an external cell, which excluded the influence of its walls on the refractive index of the medium surrounding the nanoparticles. A non-exponential time profile of the kinetics of luminescence decay was recorded (Fig. 2, curve 2). The decay time of the 4 F 3/2 level at the far stage of the kinetics τ fin = 451 μs turned out to be shorter than the decay time in air, but longer than in a bulk crystal, which is also qualitatively consistent with formulas (1) and (2).
Moreover, by changing the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the medium, selecting inert media with different refractive indices, it is possible to control the properties of the laser material and create materials with improved characteristics.
The following are specific examples of the invention.
1.Example 1

2.Example 2
Для увеличения τrad в нанокомпозите примерно в 1,6 раз по сравнению с массивным лазерным кристаллом Y2O3: Yb3+ с длиной волны лазерной генерации λ=0,98 pm брались сферические наночастицы Y2O3: 0,3 mol.% Yb3+ диаметром D=100 нм, имеющие показатель преломления ncr≈1,84, распределенные в оптической кювете с этиловым спиртом с показателем преломления nmed≈1,36, излучательное время жизни в которых по отношению ко времени жизни в массивном кристалле соответствуют точке калибровочной кривой на фиг.1, полученной по формулам (1) и (2) для объемной доли наночастиц с=0,4.To increase τ rad in the nanocomposite by about 1.6 times in comparison with a massive Y 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ laser crystal with a laser wavelength λ = 0.98 pm, spherical nanoparticles Y 2 O 3 : 0.3 mol were taken. % Yb 3+ with a diameter of D = 100 nm, having a refractive index n cr ≈ 1.84, distributed in an optical cuvette with ethyl alcohol with a refractive index n med ≈ 1.36, the radiative lifetime in which with respect to the lifetime in a bulk crystal correspond to the point of the calibration curve in figure 1, obtained by the formulas (1) and (2) for the volume fraction of nanoparticles with = 0.4.
3.Example 3
Примерно такое же увеличение τизл в нанокомпозите по сравнению с массивным кристаллом, как и в примере 2, получилось для сферических наночастиц Y2O3: 0,3 mol.% Yb3+ диаметром D=100 нм, имеющих показатель преломления ncr≈1,84, когда они распределены в вазелине с показателем преломления nmed≈1,47 с объемной долей наночастиц с=0,1 (фиг.1).Approximately the same increase in τ rad in the nanocomposite as compared with a massive crystal, as in Example 2, was obtained for spherical nanoparticles Y 2 O 3 : 0.3 mol.% Yb 3+ with a diameter of D = 100 nm with a refractive index n cr ≈ 1.84, when they are distributed in petroleum jelly with a refractive index of n med ≈ 1.47 with a volume fraction of nanoparticles with = 0.1 (Fig. 1).
