Abstract
Description
The invention relates to electrochemistry, in particular to methods for electrolysis of aqueous solutions of salts, and can be used to obtain solutions of salts of oxygen-containing acid of chlorine, for example, sodium hypochlorite.
A number of technical solutions are known aimed at increasing the yield of the target product obtained by electrolysis of an aqueous salt solution.
[1]. So, for example, a method is known in which, to increase the yield of a solution of a salt of oxygen-containing acid of chlorine (in particular sodium hypochlorite), an electrolysis of a solution of sodium chloride is carried out when the electrolyte is circulated in a closed circuit [1].
In this method, an increase in the yield of the target product is achieved by reusing the electrolyte solution, which contributes to a more complete conversion of the starting brine.
[2]. A known method of electrolysis of a solution of alkali metal chloride in order to obtain alkali metal hypochlorite, carried out in an electrolyzer with separated anode and cathode spaces [2].
According to the method, the electrolysis process is carried out in a continuous mode, and water is supplied to an additional chamber in which a solid salt of alkali metal chloride is dissolved to form the initial brine, as well as to the cathode chamber in which water serves as catholyte. If necessary, with an increase in the flow of water supplied, it is possible to obtain lower concentrations of alkali metal hypochlorite.
In this method, an increase in the yield of the target product is carried out due to the saturation of the electrolyte with fresh portions of the initial saline solution, as well as due to the organization of the process of electrochemical reactions in the electrolyzer, separated by a number of separation partitions.
There is a method of electrolysis of saline, selected by the author for the prototype [3]. According to the method, an electrolysis of a solution of sodium chloride is carried out in order to obtain sodium hypochlorite. The method includes the step of electrolysis of a saline solution obtained in the previous step and containing unreacted salt and electrolysis products. Electrolysis is carried out by sequentially passing the electrolyte through a series of electrolysis chambers.
The increase in the yield of the target product in this method is achieved by carrying out the electrolysis process in several successive stages with repeated use of the electrolyte, resulting in a more complete conversion of the starting salt. In addition, to ensure the efficiency of the electrolysis process, the electrolyte is periodically cooled in refrigeration chambers, which ensures the normalization of the temperature conditions of electrochemical reactions.
The methods used in the above methods, although they can increase the yield of products of electrochemical reactions contained in the electrolyte solution, obtained by electrolysis of saline solutions, however, are not sufficiently effective.
The problem that the proposed method solves is to increase the yield of the liquid-phase target product obtained by electrolysis of saline.
1:(0,15-2,00). The essence of the proposed method lies in the fact that in the method of electrolysis of an aqueous salt solution, which includes the stage of electrolysis of the initial salt solution and the subsequent electrolysis of the solution obtained at the previous stage containing electrolysis products, the subsequent electrolysis of the solution obtained at the previous stage is carried out by diluting it with water at a volume ratio solution and water 1: (0.15-2.00).
1:(0,15-2,00). New in the method is that the subsequent electrolysis of the solution obtained in the previous stage is carried out by diluting it with water at a volume ratio of solution to water of 1: (0.15-2.00).
The main difference between the proposed method and the known methods is that after the initial stage of electrolysis of the initial saline solution is carried out, further electrolysis is carried out by adding water to the solution obtained in the previous stage and containing, in addition to unspent starting reagents, products of electrochemical reactions (including the target product )
As experiments showed, the above method leads to an unexpectedly high yield of the target product.
The implementation of electrolysis in several stages contributes to a more complete conversion of the starting reagents.
Dilution with water of the electrolyte supplied to the subsequent stage of electrolysis leads to a decrease in the concentration of reacting substances in the electrolyte solution and to a shift in the hydrolysis of the products of the electrochemical transformation in the solution in the direction of increasing the amount of dissociated ions involved in the formation of the target product, and, as a result, its yield significantly increased.
In addition, the addition of water to the electrolyte helps to optimize the temperature conditions of electrochemical reactions, which increases the efficiency of electrolysis and also provides an increase in the yield of the target product. Moreover, depending on the particular electrolysis process, water of the required temperature is added.
The proposed method for carrying out electrolysis can be carried out in electrolyzers of both continuous and periodic action. The method can be implemented using the same electrolysis chamber with a corresponding increase in electrolysis time as the volume of electrolyte passed through it increases or by increasing the number of electrolysis chambers through which electrolyte is passed at each of the subsequent electrolysis stages.
The drawing shows a schematic illustration of one of the possible variants of the device for implementing the proposed method.
The method is as follows.
In the case of the electrolysis process in batch electrolyzers, the prepared initial salt solution is loaded into the electrolyzer and electrolysis is carried out in the mode required for a particular process. At the end of the electrolysis process, the resulting solution containing unreacted starting reagents and dissolved products of the electrochemical reaction, including the target product, is diluted with water in the ratio of the volume of the solution to the volume of water 1: (0.15-2.00) and again fed to the electrolysis. At the end of the electrolysis process, the resulting solution is again diluted with water in the above volume ratio and again subjected to electrolysis.
The operation of diluting with water the solution obtained in the previous stage, followed by its electrolysis, is repeated until there is a noticeable increase in the yield of the finished product compared to the previous stage of electrolysis. As practice has shown, it is economically feasible to repeat the electrolysis operation of an electrolyte diluted with water 3-4 times.
In the case of carrying out the electrolysis process in flow-type electrolyzers, for example, in a box-type electrolyzer with undivided cathode and anode spaces, the method is as follows (see drawing).
3. The initial saline solution is fed from above into the interelectrode space of the electrolytic cell 1 of the electrolyzer 2. Water is supplied to the lower part of the interelectrode space of the cell 1 through the pipe 3.
The first stage of electrolysis of the initial saline solution occurs in the volume of the electrolytic cell 1 located above the water supply level. The subsequent stage of electrolysis occurs when the solution containing the unreacted starting salt and products of the electrochemical reaction, including the target product, is diluted and flows in the volume of the electrolytic cell 1, limited by the height of the water supply level.
6. The solution containing the target product enters the extra-electrode space, separated from the electrolyte cell by the partition 4, through the hole 5. The drain of this solution is carried out through the pipe 6.
The required ratio of the volumes of water and electrolyte is regulated by changing the flow rate of the supplied salt solution and water.
(NaClO). Example 1. We carry out the electrolysis of a 10% solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) in order to obtain a solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO).
The electrolysis was carried out in a periodic cell electrolyzer with an undivided electrode space. Electrolysis mode: U = 22 V; f = 0.5-0.6 A / cm 2 . The volume of the initial saline solution is 3 liters. The first stage of electrolysis was carried out for 35 minutes.
At the end of the first stage, the amount of NaClO in the solution was 15.9 g (in terms of active chlorine).
К раствору, полученному на первой стадии, добавляли 3 л воды с t = 18,0oC (объемное соотношение раствора и воды 1:1).To the solution obtained in the first stage was added 3 L of water with t = 18.0 ° C (the volume ratio of the solution to water was 1: 1).
A solution diluted with water in a volume of 6 L was fed to the second stage of electrolysis. The electrolysis mode was not changed.
At the end of electrolysis, the amount of NaClO in the solution was 36 g.
1:1. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth stages of electrolysis were carried out in a similar manner. Before each subsequent stage, the solution obtained in the previous stage was diluted with water in a volume ratio of 1: 1.
The amount of NaClO in the solution after the third stage was 72 g, after the fourth stage - 96 g, after the fifth - 120.8 g.
After the sixth stage, the yield of NaClO did not increase compared with the fifth stage, which indicated the inappropriateness of the further process.
Thus, upon decomposition of 300 g of NaCl, 120.8 g of NaClO was obtained, which is a very high result for the electrolysis process under consideration.
Example 2 (comparative). Conducted electrolysis of a 10% NaCl solution in an amount of 3 l, as described in example 1, but without diluting the solution with water at each of the subsequent stages.
The amount of NaClO obtained was 15.9 g; in the second stage, 21.0 g; in the third stage - 21.5 g; at the fourth stage, 22.0 g. There was no further increase in the amount of NaClO.
As the example shows, it was not possible to obtain a significant increase in the yield, and the amount of NaClO obtained in Example 1 is almost 6 times higher than in the considered example.
Example 3. Carried out the electrolysis of a 10% solution of NaCl in order to obtain NaClO using the electrolyzer shown in the drawing.
1:0,15. Saline flow rate - 220 l / h, water flow rate - 33 l / h. In this case, the volume ratio of the solution and water was maintained at 1: 0.15.
2.Electrolysis mode: voltage - 80 V, current density - 0.6 A / cm 2 .
The residence time of the electrolyte in the working area was 18 s.
The concentration of NaClO in the resulting solution with a volume of 253 L was 6.7 g / L (in terms of active chlorine), which corresponds to 2295.1 g.
Example 4 (comparative). Electrolysis was carried out as described in example 3, but without the addition of water. The volume of saline solution is 253 liters.
The concentration of NaClO in the resulting solution was 6.0 g / l, which corresponds to a yield of 1518 g.
4. As can be seen from the examples, the amount of NaClO obtained in example 3 significantly exceeds the amount of product obtained in example 4.
The energy costs in examples 1 and 3 amounted to 6.0 - 6.5 kW per 1 kg of sodium hypochlorite (in terms of active chlorine).
Thus, the above examples indicate that in the case of the electrolysis process according to the proposed method, it is possible to achieve a deep conversion of the starting salt (up to 60% active chlorine) at an economically acceptable cost of electricity.
