Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the production of radioisotope sources and can be used in the radiochemical industry.
[1]. A known method of preparing sources of gamma radiation from cesium chloride [1].
The disadvantages of this method are the good solubility of cesium chloride in water, the possibility of corrosion of the ampoule.
[2]. A known method of preparing cesium sources of gamma radiation using a glass aluminophosphate matrix [2].
The disadvantages of this method are the high temperatures and the time of glass melting (up to 1100 o C and 2 to 3 hours), which leads to a significant ablation of cesium with a gas phase; technological difficulties associated with pouring the required amount of glass into the ampoule.
A known method of preparing cesium sources of gamma radiation using a zeolite or silica gel matrix, used to produce isotopic sources with low specific activity [3], selected as a prototype and comprising the following stages:
immersion in a cesium solution of a zeolite or silica gel matrix, holding for 42 hours at a temperature of 30 - 40 o C, washing with water, repeating the previous three operations, comparison with control sources, reducing the activity to the required level by repeated (7-8 times) acid washing , calcination at a temperature of 1150 o C for 20-30 minutes
The disadvantages of this method are: a small specific activity of the sources (the maximum possible saturation of 100 mg of cesium per gram matrix), a large number of solutions, including the remains of the original, requiring disposal, high calcination temperature.
повысить удельную активность цезиевых источников гамма-излучения;
уменьшить количество жидких радиоактивных отходов при приготовлении источников;
снизить унос цезия с газовой фазой при прокалке;
The technical task of the invention is to create such a method for producing cesium sources of gamma radiation based on a silica gel matrix, which allows:
increase the specific activity of cesium sources of gamma radiation;
reduce the amount of liquid radioactive waste in the preparation of sources;
reduce the entrainment of cesium with a gas phase during calcination;
increase the chemical stability of the resulting sources.
The solution of this problem is achieved by the fact that the preparation of cesium isotope sources of gamma radiation is carried out by evaporation of the cesium solution to dryness, then the boron-containing solution is processed and the saturated silica gel is calcined at 800 - 1000 o C, which allows:
increase the saturation of the matrix with cesium by 4–5 times (the maximum saturation in the claimed conditions is 500 mg of cesium per gram of silica gel), and the activity of the obtained source by 8–15 times (with this saturation of silica gel with cesium, the matrix volume decreases, it “compresses” by 2 - 3 times),
upon evaporation, to obtain condensate purified from cesium more than 30,000 times, and condensate is the only liquid waste,
to reduce the entrainment of cesium with the gas phase by reducing the temperature of calcination of saturated silica gel to 800 - 1000 o C (cesium is a glass-forming element, and with an increase in its content, the temperature required to melt the silica gel decreases),
to increase the chemical stability of the source by obtaining glass granules, since cesium is a glass-forming element, and by introducing boron, also a glass-forming element.
силикагель контактируют с цезиевым раствором и упаривают последний при температуре от минимальной температуры, равной 85oC до максимальной температуры, соответствующей началу закипания используемого водно-солевого раствора;
после упаривания первой порции цезиевого раствора силикагель контактируют с новой порцией цезиевого раствора и доводят насыщение силикагеля цезием до величины не более 500 мг цезия на грамм силикагеля;
The task is carried out according to the following scheme:
silica gel is contacted with a cesium solution and the latter is evaporated at a temperature from a minimum temperature of 85 ° C to a maximum temperature corresponding to the start of boiling of the used saline solution;
after evaporation of the first portion of the cesium solution, the silica gel is contacted with a new portion of the cesium solution and the saturation of silica gel with cesium is adjusted to a value of not more than 500 mg cesium per gram of silica gel;
after evaporation of the cesium solution, saturated silica gel is treated with a boron-containing solution (steaming operation), while the boron content should be no more than 10 mg per gram of silica gel,
saturated silica gel is calcined at a temperature of 800 - 1000 o C to obtain a glassy surface of the granules.
Example 1. The temperature regime of the evaporation process is determined as follows.
The lower limit is obtained by the combination of the achieved saturation and the time of the evaporation process. One gram of KSKG silica gel was placed in a crucible with a solution containing 1 mol / L HNO 3 and 20 g / L Cs, and the solution was evaporated at various temperatures (as the solution was evaporated, it was added to achieve maximum saturation). The results of the experiment are shown in the drawing.
85oC.Thus, the lower temperature limit of evaporation of the cesium solution is 85 o C.
1.The upper limit of the evaporation temperature is determined by the entrainment of cesium with the vapor-gas phase (condensate). Two grams of KSKG silica gel was placed in a flask with 50 ml of a solution containing 1 mol / L HNO 3 and 20 g / L Cs, and the solution was evaporated to dryness at 98 - 99 ° C. A similar experiment was carried out with evaporation of the solution at moderate boiling of the solution. The results of the analysis of the obtained condensate are given in table. 1.
Thus, the upper limit of the temperature of the process should be lower than the boiling point of the solution, since otherwise the entrainment of cesium with the vapor – gas phase increases by more than an order of magnitude.
Example 2. The temperature regime and the calcination time is determined by the combination of chemical stability and the reduction coefficient of the volume of the obtained product.
The suitability of a solid matrix for fixing radionuclides is determined by its chemical stability, which is determined by the rate of leaching of elements into distilled water [4]. In the table. Figure 2 shows the results of determining the chemical stability of cesium-saturated and calcined silica gel samples that were stored in contact with water for a long period of time.
To obtain a final matrix suitable for long-term safe storage (cesium leaching rate is less than 1.0 • 10 -6 g / cm 2 • day), the calcination temperature should be at least 800 o C with a calcination time of at least 15 minutes.
The results of a decrease in the volume of saturated silica gel depending on the calcination temperature are given in table. 3 (conditions of the experiment are similar to the previous experiment, calcination time is 15-60 minutes).
800 - 1000oC.Thus, the temperature of the calcination should be in the range of 800 - 1000 o C.
Example 3. The required mass content of boron introduced to increase the chemical stability of the isotope source is determined as follows.
Silica gel of the KSKG and ASKG grades (fractional composition and mass ratio of grades as in Example 2) are saturated with cesium up to 500 mg / g, treated (“steaming”) with a boron-containing solution, for example, a solution of boric acid with a different concentration of boron, and calcined at a temperature of 1000 o C for 60 minutes
4. When the boron content is more than 45 mg per gram of silica gel (starting silica gel, i.e., unsaturated and non-calcined), the silica gel is melted and the volume increases due to foaming, which makes it difficult to pack the product into ampoules. With a boron content of 15-45 mg / g silica gel K, the decrease in volume is a value greater than 0.7, which gives an insignificant effect of increasing the specific activity of the isotopic source. When the boron content is less than 10 mg / g, the leaching rate of cesium increases, while the decrease in volume is 0.33 - 0.7. After calcination, granular, glassy granules are obtained. For a boron content range of 0-15 mg / g, the cesium leaching rate after 7 days of exposure is shown in Table. 4.
Thus, the optimal boron content corresponds to 10 mg per gram of starting silica gel.
