Abstract
The utility model relates to the field of optics, in particular to the technology of optical fiber amplifiers and laser pulse generators. A cascade fiber-optic system for generating laser pulses of high spectral density is proposed, which includes a system for generating powerful parabolic pulses based on the effect of nonlinear spectral compression, characterized by the presence of a fiber with normal dispersion decreasing along the length, which ensures that the pulse envelope approaches a parabolic shape. A high-energy laser pulse is negatively chirped at the output of the system for generating powerful parabolic pulses, then it is injected into the SC element (compression spectrum), where the nonlinear compression of the spectrum occurs. We note that due to the difference in the initial shape of the envelope, the compressed spectrum is characterized by the presence of "wings" accompanying the main peak, which results in a low final spectral density. The result obtained can be used in applications of nonlinear frequency conversion, the efficiency of which requires a high radiation intensity in a given spectral range.
Description
The utility model relates to the field of optics, in particular to the technology of optical fiber amplifiers and laser pulse generators.
One of the main problems of modern laser physics is the generation of radiation with a high spectral density, which is necessary in a number of problems, for example, when converting frequencies using nonlinear crystals - to generate sum and difference frequencies, parametric generation. It is important to note that in some spectral ranges, radiation can only be obtained in such ways. To achieve an efficient nonlinear conversion, it is necessary to achieve a high radiation intensity in a given region of the spectrum. The standard solution is to use laser sources of ultrashort pulses, in which the peak power of the pulse exceeds the average power of the source by orders of magnitude. The disadvantage of this method is that ultrashort pulses have a wide spectrum, and only a small part of the pulse energy is concentrated in the required spectral range. To eliminate this drawback, this utility model is proposed.
Purpose: to increase the intensity of radiation in a given spectral range.
Technical result: to reduce the width of the pulse spectrum without significant loss of its energy - and without significant distortion of the shape of the spectral line.
The technical result is achieved by using the effect of non-linear self-phase modulation (SPM), which accompanies the propagation of the pulse in the optical fiber and leads to compression of the spectrum of the pulse with negative frequency modulation (chirp), as well as due to the correct choice of the shape of the envelope of the initial pulse. In this case, the maximum degree of spectrum compression is achieved with a parabolic envelope shape.
A known system for generating high-energy parabolic laser pulses (Patent US 2004/0028326 A1, Fermann et al), consisting of a source of ultrashort laser pulses, a pumping system and an active fiber with normal group velocity dispersion (GVD) doped with rare earth ions, for example Yb 3+ . In the proposed optical system (Fig. 1), a variant of the circuit for the spectral compression of laser pulses with a PS element responsible for parabolizing the spectrum is proposed.
(Agrawal G., "Nonlinear fiber optics" (Springer, fourth edition, 2007, 530 p.)It is known that the propagation of ultrashort pulses in an active nonlinear optical fiber is described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with gain (Agrawal G., "Nonlinear fiber optics" (Springer, fourth edition, 2007, 530 p.)
Here A(z,τ) is the slowly varying pulse amplitude, D is the GVD of the active fiber, and R is the coefficient of the Kerr nonlinearity of the fiber.
The principle of operation of the well-known system is based on the fact that the envelope of an ultrashort laser pulse amplified in an optical fiber with a constant gain and a constant normal GVD asymptotically tends to a parabolic form at z→∞, which scales with increasing pulse coordinate, while the amplitude and phase of the asymptotic parabolic the solutions do not depend on the initial pulse shape, but are determined only by the initial pulse energy E 0 and the parameters of the active fiber.
A variant of the system for compressing the spectra of laser pulses is shown in Fig. 1. In Table 1, the corresponding designations are introduced for the parameters of the group velocity dispersion D and the nonlinearity R, characterizing each element of the system.
In the standard SC scheme, at the first stage, the initially unfrequency-modulated pulse passes through a linear dispersive element, where it acquires a negative linear chirp. This process can best be carried out using a pair of diffraction gratings. The amplitude of the pulse envelope after passing through this element can be written as
В результате, частотная модуляция импульса приобретает достаточно сложный вид, зависящий от формы огибающей импульса a(t), начальной частотной модуляции и длины распространения where C<0 is the rate of frequency modulation. In the next and final step, a negative frequency modulated pulse is injected into the non-linear fiber. There, during propagation, the pulse is exposed to the SPM, which gives the pulse a frequency modulation opposite to the original one, i.e. an additional term appears in the pulse phase proportional to the propagation length z- γ|а| 2 z. As a result, the frequency modulation of the pulse acquires a rather complex form, depending on the shape of the pulse envelope a(t), the initial frequency modulation, and the propagation length
Spectrum width of a pulse with high frequency modulation ϕ'(t). Thus, at a certain fiber length, by compensating for the negative chirp, it is possible to achieve the minimum frequency bandwidth of the spectrum, i.e. its maximum compression. Obviously, the quality of compression depends on the shape of the envelope a(t). It can be shown that the parabolic form of the pulse envelope
обеспечивает наилучший результат, где Р0 - пиковая мощность.provides the best result, where P 0 is the peak power.
Indeed, in the dispersionless case D=0 at some distance z=L, the frequency modulation can be completely compensated
т.е. Вследствие сопутствующей временной компрессии импульса минимальная ширина спектра ΔΩmin, достижимая при компрессии в волокне с нормальной ДГС, несколько больше величины ΔΩmin, получаемой в бездисперсионном случае (при D=0).those. momentum becomes spectrally limited , thus achieving the minimum width of the spectrum. In the approximation of the standard variational method, according to which the propagating pulse retains the shape of the envelope, it is easy to estimate the effect of the GVD on the SC length. The results show that in relation to the non-dispersive case, SC passes much faster in fibers with normal GVD. Due to the accompanying temporal pulse compression, the minimum spectrum width ΔΩ min achievable with compression in a fiber with normal GVD is slightly larger than the value ΔΩ min obtained in the non-dispersive case (at D=0).
Considering laser sources with a different pulse profile, for example, Gaussian, we note that, in contrast to the case of a parabolic envelope, their spectral compression is accompanied by the appearance of distortions - SPM only partially or locally compensates for the initial chirp, which is characterized by the appearance of "wings" and/or "pedestal" in compressed spectrum of the pulse and significantly reduces the efficiency of the process. Based on the foregoing, it is proposed to modernize the scheme of a standard SC by adding an additional PS-element (parabolizator spectrum) to its composition, which provides a smooth transformation of the initial shape of the pulse envelope to a parabola (Fig. 1). This can be done, for example, using modern optical processing technologies - pulse shaping with a given envelope profile and the necessary frequency modulation. Programmable liquid crystal phase masks or programmable acousto-optic filters can be considered as such elements. However, the use of such complex and expensive elements is not mandatory. As is known, the pulse envelope automatically acquires a parabolic profile when passing through a nonlinear fiber with a hyperbolically decreasing normal dispersion. This effect is due to the fact that the propagation of a pulse in a fiber with a decreasing normal GVD, due to the relative increase in the influence of nonlinearity, is equivalent to propagation in an amplifying medium with an infinitely wide gain band. Its result is the formation of a parabolic similariton pulse (i.e., changing "self-similarly") with a linear chirp. Technologically, optical fibers with a variable GVD and a constant fiber nonlinearity parameter y can be manufactured, for example, based on fibers with a W-profile of the refractive index in the cross section. When drawing them, it is possible to achieve a significant change in the GVD due to a small variation in the fiber diameter, while the mode area and the coefficient of nonlinearity along this can be considered constant with a high degree of accuracy. By supplementing the system with such an element, it is possible to reshape the envelope and improve the quality of the SC at the final stage.
On FIG. Figure 2 shows the evolution of the pulse envelope spectrum as it passes through the upgraded fiber cascade. The dashed line marks the boundary between the element responsible for spectrum parabolization (PS-element) and the spectrum compressor (SC-element), represented as optical fibers with different values of dispersion and nonlinearity. As the pulse passes through the PS-element, a smooth broadening of its spectrum is observed, and at the length of the fiber l p =100 m, the shape of the pulse envelope approaches parabolic. In this case, the spectral density decreases by almost 4 times, and the peak pulse power decreases by more than 50 times. The prepared pulse passes through diffraction gratings, where its chirp is inverted, and then, in the SC-fiber element with constant normal dispersion, the pulse is spectrally compressed due to gradual compensation of negative frequency modulation. With the selected design parameters, the maximum spectrum compression is realized in a fiber with a length l sc =225 m.
As a result, it can be seen that the proposed utility model, due to the achievement of the technical result - the narrowing of the pulse spectrum, ensures the achievement of the goal, namely, improving the quality of spectrum compression and generating laser pulses of high spectral density.
