Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of manufacturing of low-wear anodes, in particular anodes with a base made of titanium with an electrocatalytic oxide coating, and can be used in various fields of applied electrochemistry.
A known method of manufacturing anodes based on valve metal, which includes etching the base in one or more successive acid baths, washing the base with distilled water, drying and subsequent application of an electrocatalytic coating [1] This method includes a set of operations inherent in the most common manufacturing techniques low wear anodes.
The disadvantages of the known solutions are multi-stage, as well as an unsatisfactory degree of adhesion of the oxide electrocatalytic coating to the base due to the fact that during etching, hydrogen permeation of the substrate occurs, as well as due to the presence of surface defects due to uneven removal of titanium during etching. A low degree of adhesion leads to a small resource of the anode.
To eliminate these drawbacks, it was proposed that, in the manufacture of anodes, etching be carried out in the presence of additives, for example, hydrogen peroxide [2] However, the increase in the adhesion effect is negligible.
It has also been proposed to increase the life of the anode by applying an intermediate layer, for example, from base metal oxides [3] or a mixture of noble and base metal oxides [4]
The disadvantage of these methods is the complexity and multi-stage methods of application, a large consumption of reagents, as well as a relatively small increase in the resistance of the coating.
In almost all of the above cases, to ensure the required service life, it is necessary to apply a significant number of layers of electrocatalytic oxide coating (from 5 to 12 and above), which leads to significant costs of precious metals, labor and energy costs, and increases the cost of manufactured anodes.
To successfully solve the problem of ensuring the adhesion of the electrocatalytic oxide coating with the base material, it is necessary to modify the surface of the base by changing its structural parameters, and the modification should concern a very thin, almost monomolecular layer on the surface of the base. To achieve this result, a method for manufacturing the anode is proposed, which includes etching the base, modifying its surface by implanting metal ions, in particular noble, in the amount of 0.18 to 20 at% with its subsequent electrocatalytic coating [5]. This method was chosen as prototype.
The known method allows to increase the durability of the coating, however, it is very difficult in hardware design, requires significant energy consumption, and it is almost impossible to adapt to production conditions that require the manufacture of anodes of various sizes and, even more significant, of various shapes having a different working surface from a flat one. In addition, the modification of the surface layer is not effective enough, since the energy distribution of the implanted ions obeys the law of probability, which leads to an over expenditure of noble metal ions and an increase in energy consumption for the anode manufacturing process.
The technical result of the invention is to simplify the method, eliminate the additional consumption of precious metals, accelerate the process of manufacturing the anode, and also by reducing the etching time of the base, as well as increasing the uniformity of titanium removal during etching, eliminating hydrogen pickup, making it possible to reduce the consumption of reagents for the etching process (reduction concentration of acid or acids used, acceleration of the process), as well as an increase in the resistance of the coating and the possibility of applying node of a small number of electrocatalytic coating layers (from two to five) while maintaining the life of the work.
This result is achieved by the fact that in the method of manufacturing the anode, which includes etching the titanium base in a solution of an acid or mixture of acids, washing the etched base, drying the base, modifying its surface by introducing metal ions, and then repeatedly applying the electrocatalytic oxide coating, etching and modification are carried out simultaneously by introducing metal salts into the etching solution, which can be used as metal chlorides or nitrates of the following series: Fe, Co, Ni, Sn, V, W or Mo. Metal salts are introduced into the solution in an amount of 0.5 to 120 g / l.
In the technique known methods of etching, including the introduction into the etching solution of salts of alkaline earth metals, for example Ca [6] or palladium [7]
However, the use of these additives in etching solutions can improve the etching conditions, for example, slowing down the hydrogenation process, but does not lead to surface modification of the base. In addition, the use of palladium makes the process more expensive, while the proposed solution uses non-deficient additives in concentrations up to 120 g / l, which provides surface modification due to the cementation of the additive metals on the base surface. Along the way, the maintenance of these additives leads to the elimination of nodorization, since all the etching hydrogen is released on the cemented metal ions. Moreover, the process is dynamic, since the metal ions of the additives dissolve in the etching solution and are again cemented, which ensures uniform removal of titanium during etching. It should also be noted that after etching, washing and drying, traces of the additive metals in an amount of 0.5 g / m 2 and higher (depending on the concentration of the additive in the etching solution) were found on the surface of the substrate, and they are only in the surface, monomolecular layer , however, this is sufficient to ensure strong adhesion of the electrocatalytic coating to the base. The presence of metal additives on the surface can be detected visually or using various research methods.
The use of additive concentrations in the etching solution below the specified lower limit does not allow to modify the surface, in addition, the required degree of uniformity of titanium removal during etching is not achieved, it is also possible to disturb individual microregions of the surface.
Increasing the concentration above 120 g / l will lead to a significant deposition of metal ions on the titanium surface, which may adversely affect the resistance of the coating then deposited.
The use of concentrations of additives within the claimed range allows, due to surface modification, not only to provide the necessary degree of adhesion of the coating to the surface of the substrate, but also to provide the necessary catalytic activity of the coating when the amounts are small compared to known methods for manufacturing anodes. So sometimes, to ensure the required service life, it is sufficient to apply only two layers of the catalytic coating, which is unattainable by known methods.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples, which, however, do not exhaust all the possibilities of carrying out the invention.
Example 1. The titanium rod was degreased in a solution containing 5% Na 2 CO 3 , 5% Na 3 PO 4 , 1% Na 2 SiO 3 at 80 o C for 10 minutes, then washed and placed in an etching solution containing HF 10 g / L, HNO 3 50 g / L and Co (NO 3 ) 2 6 H 2 O 10 g / L. The etching process was carried out at a temperature of 35 o C for 2 minutes, followed by washing and drying. The resulting titanium surface after etching was white and shiny, with a clearly visible crystalline surface structure. Then, a solution of the composition was applied to the base: H 2 IrCl 6 86.5 g / l (in terms of metal) and Sn (OH) 2 Cl 2 100 g / l (also in terms of metal). The anode was dried at 120 ° C. for 15 minutes and calcined at 450 ° C. for 15 minutes as well. The coating operation was repeated 6 times. The coating of the finished anode contained 4.5 g / m 2 iridium.
The anode was tested in a solution of 5% Na 2 SO 4 at a density of 0.5 A / cm 2 and a temperature of 25 o C for 1400 hours. The consumption of iridium during oxygen evolution was 10 -6 g / A h, which is significantly lower, almost five times, than the consumption of noble metals in the coatings of the anodes obtained by known methods.
Example 2. The titanium plate was degreased in an alkaline solution, as in example 1, and etched in a solution containing HF 10 g / l, HNO 3 50 g / l and SnCl 2 2 g / l. The etching process was carried out at a temperature of 35 o C for 2 minutes, followed by washing and drying. The surface of the titanium after etching was white, matte. When wiping the surface with a white sheet of paper, black traces of tin appeared on the sheet, which indicates the presence of an additive, in this case tin, on the metal surface.
On the prepared surface was applied 2 layers of coating, similar to the conditions of example 1. The anode coating contained 1.5 g / m 2 iridium.
The anode was tested in flowing installations with a diaphragm for electrolysis of low-saline (tap) water. The current density was 5 10 mA / cm 2 the water flow of 50 cm 3 / A sec. The anode worked over 10,000 hours.
1.The same anode was tested in the process of oxygen evolution under the conditions of example 1, the anode worked for 600 hours. The estimated consumption of iridium was 5 • 10 -7 g / A hour, which is even less than in example 1.
As the above data show, the application of the invention allows to accelerate the process of manufacturing anodes while reducing the cost of reagents at the etching stage while improving the etching process, such as uniformity of titanium removal and the absence of hydrogen disturbance, as well as modifying the surface of the substrate, which improves the adhesion of the electrocatalytic oxide coating to the substrate and get the anode with a minimum number of layers of electrocatalytic coating (two four) while maintaining the resource of work s.
