Abstract
Description
The invention relates to electrical engineering and can be used in installations in which electric current is transmitted from their fixed electrodes to moving (rotating), in particular for transmitting strong currents to rotating cathodes of electrolyzers used in the production of non-ferrous metals.
[1]. Known liquid metal current collector, in which the rotating electrode is made in the form of a shaft and is installed with an annular gap inside a fixed electrode having a horizontal connector. This gap contains liquid metal sealed at the ends with seals paired with elastic cuffs to the fixed electrode. The level of molten metal in the current collector is below the level of the connector. The presence of seals and elastic cuffs prevents splashing of liquid metal [1].
The main disadvantage of this design is that it does not protect the metal from environmental influences. The result is the evaporation of the metal, as well as its oxidation, thickening, formation and precipitation of a solid precipitate. The electrical contact is broken due to the sticking of the oxide film on the electrodes, which leads to a decrease in the reliability of the device and an increase in energy losses.
The closest to this invention in terms of technical nature and the achieved result is a centrifugal mercury current collector, consisting of an external rotating cup-shaped electrode (rotor) equipped with radial baffles, and an internal fixed electrode (stator). Mercury is placed in the contact gap between the electrodes, the free surface of which is located under a layer of water in the rotor cavity. Water circulates through two channels located inside the stator and having access to the rotor cavity.
Water in this case plays a dual role. Firstly, it is a gap for mercury, preventing its evaporation; secondly, it cools both the mercury itself and the electrodes [2] (prototype).
Such a current collector has the following disadvantages.
Water, interacting with mercury and electrodes, reduces the durability and reliability of the current collector, and evaporating from the surface of a rotating electrode (rotor), causes its increased corrosion and the formation of an oxide film on it. This leads to an increase in the transition resistance at the mercury-rotor interface and, accordingly, to an increase in the voltage drop across the contact up to 150-200 mV. With continuous operation for 300 hours, the fluctuations in the magnitude of the transmitted current reach 10-15%. In addition, the presence of water excludes the possibility of using other liquid metals, except for mercury, and limits the choice of electrode material, as a result of which the scope of the current collector is significantly narrowed.
The aim of the invention is to increase the reliability and durability of the contact, obtaining stability of the current collection and reducing energy consumption.
The goal is achieved by the fact that in the liquid-metal contact for current collection, consisting of a movable (rotating) electrode (rotor) and a stationary electrode (stator), both electrodes are separated by a gap filled with a metal liquid with a protective coating of the free surface, a component that is electronegative is introduced into the metal liquid in relation to the main components of the liquid, and the free surface of the metal liquid is covered with a layer of electrolyte, which is a solution of the mineral salt of the introduced component and in a mixture of water and a high molecular weight organic liquid, in this case, a fusible eutectic of the composition Ga-In-Sn is used as a metal liquid, zinc or iron is used as a component electronegative with respect to the components of a metal liquid, and glycerin is used as a high molecular weight organic liquid or ethylene glycol.
The drawing shows a liquid metal contact for current collection, a longitudinal section.
The liquid metal contact for current collection consists of a rotor 1, which is, for example, a copper or iron disk on the shaft 2, and a
The liquid metal contact for current collection works as follows.
Before the contact starts, a
When current is applied to the
Improving the reliability and durability of liquid-metal contact, obtaining current collector stability and reducing power consumption can be achieved only by a combination of the claimed essential features. So, tests with zinc acetate in the composition of the protective electrolyte layer gave a negative result: the dispersion of a metal liquid and the adhesion of oxide films to the rotor. The use of various kinds of technical oils as the organic component of the electrolyte also worsens the operational characteristics of the device due to the dispersion of the electrolyte.
