Description
The utility model relates to the field of scintillation detectors of ionizing radiation, more specifically to charged particle detectors of mainly α and β radiation based on solid-state organic scintillators.
A well-known charged particle detector (RF patent No. 2594991) containing a semiconductor photosensor as a converter of light bursts initiated by charged particles into electric pulses, consisting of an arbitrarily thin completely polished scintillator plate made in the form of an equilateral polygon with at least four angles. The scintillator plate is optically and mechanically coupled to a fully polished substrate transparent to scintillations. The substrate has the form and the refractive index of light is the same as that of the scintillator. The total thickness of the sandwich formed from the scintillator and the substrate is equal to the diameter of the sensitive surface of the semiconductor photosensor, optically and mechanically attached to the sandwich in one of its corners, which is made ground and polished to obtain a contact area with the dimensions of the sensitive region of the semiconductor photosensor.
All surfaces of the sandwich, with the exception of the back one and the semiconductor photosensor attached to it, are coated with a mirror reflector, and the back surface is covered with a diffuse reflector. The scintillator is made thin enough to ensure insensitivity to gamma radiation while maintaining high detection efficiency of α and β particles.
A disadvantage of the known detector is the low collection efficiency of light pulses generated in the scintillator, and as a consequence, the low sensitivity of the detector to weak flows of charged particles. This drawback is associated primarily with the isotropy of the propagation of light pulses generated in the scintillator, with the known isotropy of the propagation of light pulses reflected from the surface of the fiber covered with a diffuse reflector, as well as with a low reflection coefficient for diffuse scattering on the back of the detector.
The objective of the utility model is to increase the efficiency of the detector with respect to the collection of light pulses generated in the scintillator and, as a result, to increase the sensitivity of the detector to weak flows of charged particles.
The problem is solved in that in a charged particle detector, consisting of a photodetector, an arbitrarily thin polished scintillator plate made in the form of a polygon with at least four angles, optically and mechanically connected to a transparent scintillation fiber, repeating the shape of the scintillator, together forming a sandwich , one of the corners of which is cut, so that the width and thickness of the cut correspond to the dimensions of the input window of the photodetector. In this case, the photodetector is attached to the specified slice. The outer surface of the scintillator and the side surfaces of the syndwich are coated with a mirror reflector. The light guide in cross section is a wedge with a photodetector on the wide side, and the angle opposite the cut of the sandwich on which the photodetector is located is the tip of the wedge. For better reflection, the back surface of the fiber is covered with a mirror reflector, and the mirror reflector on the back surface of the fiber and the outer surface of the scintillator is sprayed with metal in a vacuum.
The technical result of the utility model is to increase the efficiency of the collection of light pulses and, as a consequence, to increase the sensitivity of the detector to weak flows of charged particles.
Полезная модель поясняется рисунком, на котором 1 - тонкий сцинцилятор; 2 - световод из несцинтиллирующего материала, оптически прозрачного в полосе высвечивания пластика, изготовленный в форме клина;The utility model is illustrated in the figure, in which 1 is a thin scintillator; 2 - a fiber made of non-scintillating material, optically transparent in a plastic strip, made in the form of a wedge;
3 - photo detector (for example: silicon photomultipliers, avalanche photodiodes, etc.); 4, 5 - mirror-reflecting surfaces made by spraying metal in a vacuum.
The use of a wedge-shaped wafer on the thickest side of the photodetector input window, with the use of all its surfaces except for contacting with a scintillator with a mirror-reflective coating, can increase the collection of light pulses generated in scintillator. Light pulses generated in the scintillator propagate into the fiber and are reflected from its back surface, mainly towards the photodetector and reach it with fewer reflections. The use of a mirror-reflective coating for the rear surface of the fiber, instead of a diffuse reflector, also reduces the loss of light pulses at each reflection from it.
The measures taken, ceteris paribus, provide a much more efficient collection of light pulses than in the detector prototype.
