The aim of the invention is to increase the accuracy and efficiency of determining the concentration of gases and vapors. The essence of the invention is that the medium is probed sequentially with two pulses of electromagnetic radiation of different durations at the wavelength of the absorption line of the test gas or vapor. From the difference in attenuation of these two pulses, the desired concentration of gas or vapor is found using the appropriate ratio. By using the effects of non-stationary polarization of the medium, which is manifested when probing with very short pulses of electromagnetic radiation, the need to measure absorption at different wavelengths is eliminated, which eliminates the errors associated with non-resonant losses.

The aim of the invention is to increase the efficiency and accuracy of measurements.
The physical basis of the method consists in the fact that polarization of the medium, which is absent before the arrival of a pulse of electromagnetic radiation, does not occur instantly under the action of a pulse. Therefore, the coefficient of resonant absorption of the medium in the case of the passage of very short pulses will differ from the coefficient of resonant absorption when probing with a longer pulse.
The method is as follows.
A medium of a test gas is sent with a pulse of optical radiation of a fixed frequency that falls into the absorption line of the test gas. Re-sensing is performed using an optical pulse of equal intensity at the same frequency. In the first and second soundings, the pulse durations f and ij are respectively chosen different, proceeding from the conditions, / 7g; 1P

The technical advantages of the invention are that it is not necessary to tune the frequency of the probe radiation source (laser) or to use two sources generating at different wavelengths. At
This eliminates the errors associated with the resonance loss. In addition, when implementing the method, the requirements for the transmission width of the radiation receiver are sharply reduced, which leads to an increase in the signal / noise ratio and, therefore, to an increase in the measurement accuracy.

. The gas concentration is determined from the measured intensities of the radiation transmitted through the medium. When probing with a longer pulse (of duration f,), a stationary absorption coefficient K is realized in the medium. . In the case of probing with a short pulse 2, the absorption in the medium does not have time to grow to a stationary value and is determined by the expression for the absorption coefficient K during unstable interaction:
