Abstract

Composite polyvinyl alcohol/graphene hydrogels discs with incorporated silver nanoparticles were obtained using a novel method consisting of production of polyvinyl alcohol/graphene hydrogel discs by successive freezing and thawing method and electrochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles in polyvinyl alcohol/graphene hydrogel at constant applied voltage. Electrochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticle is simple, cost-effective and clean method for incorporation of silver nanoparticles in PVA/Gr matrix, as well as the control of nanoparticle concentration and distribution in the final product. Incorporation of nanoparticles within discs as compared to nanoparticle immobilization on the surface only, provides higher nanoparticle concentrations as well as prolonged nanoparticles release. PVA/Gr hydrogels discs with incorporated silver nanoparticles can be used in wet or dried forms as biocompatible carriers and/or efficient donors of silver nanoparticles as active components in all applications in which these nanocomposites are utilized (e.g. medicine, pharmacy, catalysis, optics).
