Collagen extracted from animal skins together with electrolytes are used as substrates for growing animal cells and pathogenic germs in biology, microbiology, virology, in the prepn. of anti-bacterial vaccines or (as antigens) in diagnostic reagents. The prepn. has enhanced bio-compatibility, and is suitable for partial or complete replacement of normal sera and meat extracts used in animal cell and bacterial cultures.
