Description
Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention
The subject of the invention is a method of regeneration of used activated carbons with added catalytic-chemisorptive additives, enabling the decomposition of highly toxic substances contained in water, such as cyanides and arsenic-, sulfur- and phosphorus-organic compounds, as well as water disinfection.
Activated carbons, catalyzed by silver, copper and manganese compounds (sorbents), are an important element of water treatment devices adapted to use surface sources that are most exposed to chemical, biological and radioactive contamination. During the water purification process, the sorption capacity of the sorbent and its catalytic properties are depleted by washing out and deactivating the deposited metal compounds. These metals, in contact with substances dissolved in the treated water, enter into oxidation and reduction reactions, changing their oxidation state, and partially undergo ion exchange processes and even permanent binding, which leads to the exhaustion of the sorbent activity.
The problem of disposal of used activated carbons is an issue that is becoming increasingly important. The ever-growing use of activated carbons leads to an increase in their production. A natural consequence of the use of activated carbons is that after use, they become hazardous waste that must be properly managed. In accordance with the Waste Act (Journal of Laws 01.62.628, as amended), the most desirable course of waste management is effective minimization of its quantity, recovery, and only as a last resort, incineration or storage. This method of dealing with used activated carbons means that efforts should be made to recover them through regeneration, especially since regenerated activated carbons can be reused as sorbents in various water treatment devices.
Utylizacja, poprzez spalanie węgla aktywnego z naniesionymi tlenkami srebra, miedzi i manganu, z uwagi na znaczną zawartość metali ciężkich, wymaga stosowania specjalnych instalacji wyposażonych w odpowiednie układy oczyszczania spalin i systemy odzysku metali. Utilization by burning activated carbon with silver, copper and manganese oxides, due to the significant content of heavy metals, requires the use of special installations equipped with appropriate exhaust gas purification systems and metal recovery systems. This makes the utilization process technically difficult and expensive, so it is advisable and profitable to regenerate activated carbons that can be reused as fully functional adsorbents with properties identical or very similar to the initial ones.
The Polish patent description PL 214 211 B1 describes a method of regenerating used activated carbons, saturated with organic compounds, used for the sorption of organic pollutants from aqueous solutions, as well as activated carbons being carriers of organic synthesis catalysts. This method involves treating used activated carbon saturated with a mixture of organic substances with a CaO2 solution. Then, the solution is acidified with sulfuric acid (VI) to pH 3-4 and iron (II) sulfate (VI) is introduced in a weight ratio (calculated as Fe 2+ ions) Fe 2+ /CaO2 from 1: 3 to 1: 5 The reaction releases hydrogen peroxide, which in reaction with iron (II) ions decomposes to form hydroxyl radicals, causing the decomposition of organic substances adsorbed on activated carbon.
The essence of the invention is that the used sorbent, after initial drying at a temperature from 90°C to 130°C, preferably at 110°C, in a dryer with forced air circulation, until the humidity is below 10%, is tested and assessed in terms of its content. manganese, copper and silver carbon and if the carbon content is at least 1% manganese, at least 2.5% copper, and at least 0.5% silver, the activated carbon is subjected to thermal regeneration in a furnace with a rotary reactor at a temperature from 350°C to 450°C, preferably at a temperature of 400°C, however, if the carbon content of manganese is less than 1%, copper less than 2.5% and silver less than 0.5%, the activated carbon is subjected to thermal regeneration in a furnace with a rotary reactor at a temperature of 700°C to 900°C, preferably at 800°C, in the presence of water vapor, and then poured into the regeneration furnace dispenser and forced to pour it through the central section of the furnace in the period from 45 min to 75 min, preferably 60 min, after which the coal is aged in a closed container and cooled to a temperature below 30°C.
The thermal regeneration temperature is regulated using a power supply and measurement system equipped with a measurement probe placed in the reactor reaction tube.
The furnace used to implement the method according to the invention has three sections, where regeneration is carried out in the central section, equipped with blades that mix the sorbent during regeneration, and the side sections stabilize the temperature in the regeneration area.
Depending on the regeneration temperature, the ratio of the amount of water vapor to the sorbent is selected to protect the activated carbon against ignition.
Unlike the previously used technologies for the regeneration of carbon carriers, i.e. pure activated carbons without any applied catalysts, the solution according to the invention allows for the full regeneration of carbons impregnated with manganese, copper and silver, i.e. restoring the sorption and catalytic properties of the used sorbent. The solution according to the invention allows the re-use of impregnated activated carbons in the process of treating drinking water from surface water in water treatment devices. The method does not produce waste products and is harmless to the environment. Due to the recovery of hazardous waste, it contributes to increasing the level of environmental protection.
Unexpectedly, it turned out that the sorbent regenerated at 800°C had a changed internal structure; it becomes more microporous, with an increased surface area and specific volume, which positively affects its functional properties, as adsorption in the micropores is very strong. It also shows a significant increase in the methylene and iodine numbers as well as the breakthrough times of the sorbent layer.
Przedmiot wynalazku objaśniono na poniższych przykładach laboratoryjnego zastosowania sposobu. The subject of the invention is explained by the following examples of laboratory application of the method.
Przygotowanie próbek do badań. Węgiel aktywny z naniesionymi dodatkami katalizującymi w postaci nadmanganianu potasu, węglanu miedzi i azotanu srebra pobrany został z kolumny chemisorpcyjnej filtra wody, po przepompowaniu przez kolumnę ok. 40 000 litrów wody powierzchniowej, skażonej drobnoustrojami i substancjami toksycznymi w postaci cyjanku potasu, arseninu sodu, chloroetyloetylosiarczku i difenylochlorofosforanu. Mokry sorbent pobrany z kolumny filtra oznaczono jako FPW, wysuszono w temperaturze 110°C i poddano badaniom właściwości użytkowych.Preparation of samples for testing. Activated carbon with added catalytic additives in the form of potassium permanganate, copper carbonate and silver nitrate was taken from the chemisorption column of the water filter, after pumping approximately 40,000 liters of surface water through the column, contaminated with microorganisms and toxic substances in the form of potassium cyanide, sodium arsenite, chloroethylethyl sulfide. and diphenylchlorophosphate. The wet sorbent taken from the filter column was marked as FPW, dried at 110°C and subjected to performance tests.
Przykład 1 - Próbka FPW 400 (temperatura regeneracji 400°C)Example 1 - Sample FPW 400 (regeneration temperature 400°C)
Węgiel aktywny przeznaczony do regeneracji wprowadzono w ilości ok. 80 g przy pomocy urządzenia załadowczego do środkowej części pieca, wyposażonej w skrzydełka mieszające sorbent w czasie regeneracji. Po załadowaniu pieca, w rurze reakcyjnej zamocowano króciec zasilająco -pomiarowy, i wprowadzono do niego sondę pomiarową, służącą do pomiaru temperatury wewnątrz rury. Następnie zaprogramowano pracę pieca; temperaturę 400°C, czas dochodzenia do temperatury regeneracji 1 godz. i czas regeneracji 1 godz. Activated carbon intended for regeneration was introduced in an amount of approximately 80 g using a loading device into the central part of the furnace, equipped with blades mixing the sorbent during regeneration. After loading the furnace, a supply and measurement stub was installed in the reaction pipe and a measurement probe was inserted into it to measure the temperature inside the pipe. Then the furnace operation was programmed; temperature 400°C, time to reach the regeneration temperature 1 hour. and regeneration time 1 hour. Then its propulsion system was engaged. The reactor rotated during heating, ensuring uniform heating of the coal and preventing the reaction tube from deforming at high temperatures. After regeneration, the sample was seasoned in a closed vessel and cooled to an ambient temperature of approximately 25°C by free cooling.
Przykład 2 - Próbka FPW 800 (temperatura regeneracji 800°C)Example 2 - Sample FPW 800 (regeneration temperature 800°C)
Węgiel aktywny przeznaczony do regeneracji wprowadzono w ilości ok. 80 g przy pomocy urządzenia załadowczego do środkowej części pieca, wyposażonej w skrzydełka mieszające sorbent w czasie regeneracji. Po załadowaniu pieca, w rurze reakcyjnej zamocowano króciec zasilająco -pomiarowy, który podłączono do wytwornicy pary i wprowadzono do niego sondę pomiarową, służącą do pomiaru temperatury wewnątrz rury. Wytworzoną parę podawano do strefy regeneracji węgla przez króciec zasilająco-pomiarowy. Podawana para zabezpiecza węgiel przed dostępem tlenu z powietrza. Następnie zaprogramowano pracę pieca; temperaturę 800°C, czas dochodzenia do temperatury regeneracji 1 godz. i czas regeneracji 1 godz. Po uruchomieniu pieca zaprogramowano i włączono pracę wytwornicy pary; temperaturę 400°C i czas wytwarzania pary, dłuższy niż czas dochodzenia do temperatury regeneracji plus czas regeneracji. Po regeneracji próbkę sezonowano w zamkniętym naczyniu i schłodzono do temperatury otoczenia ok. 25°C poprzez chłodzenie swobodne.Activated carbon intended for regeneration was introduced in an amount of approximately 80 g using a loading device into the central part of the furnace, equipped with blades mixing the sorbent during regeneration. After loading the furnace, a power supply and measurement stub was installed in the reaction pipe, connected to the steam generator, and a measurement probe was inserted into it to measure the temperature inside the pipe. The generated steam was fed to the coal regeneration zone through the supply and measurement connector. The supplied steam protects the coal against oxygen from the air. Then the furnace operation was programmed; temperature 800°C, time to reach the regeneration temperature 1 hour. and regeneration time 1 hour. Then its propulsion system was engaged. The reactor rotated during heating, ensuring uniform heating of the coal and preventing the reaction tube from deforming at high temperatures. After starting the furnace, the steam generator was programmed and turned on; a temperature of 400°C and a steam generation time longer than the time to reach the regeneration temperature plus the regeneration time. After regeneration, the sample was seasoned in a closed vessel and cooled to an ambient temperature of approximately 25°C by free cooling.

Regeneracja FPW w temperaturze 400°C spowodowała nieznaczną poprawę właściwości użytkowych tego sorbentu. Liczba metylenowa wzrosła o 2 cm3, a liczba jodowa o 43 mg/g. Parametry struktury wewnętrznej pozostały w zasadzie bez zmian.Regeneration of FPW at a temperature of 400°C resulted in a slight improvement in the functional properties of this sorbent. The methylene number increased by 2 cm 3 and the iodine number by 43 mg/g. The parameters of the internal structure remained basically unchanged.
Efekty rozwinięcia struktury wewnętrznej węgla nastąpiły w temperaturze 800°C. Spowodowało to wyraźny wzrost liczby metylenowej i jodowej oraz czasów przebicia warstwy sorbentu. Sorbent FPW regenerowany w temperaturze 800°C osiągnął liczbę metylenową 38 ml i liczbę jodową 908 mg/g. Powierzchnia właściwa wzrosła z 861 do 955 m2/g. The effects of developing the internal structure of carbon occurred at a temperature of 800°C. This resulted in a significant increase in the methylene and iodine numbers as well as the breakthrough times of the sorbent layer. The FPW sorbent regenerated at 800°C reached a methylene number of 38 ml and an iodine value of 908 mg/g. The specific surface area increased from 861 to 955 m 2 /g. A characteristic feature is an increase in the percentage of micropores in the total pore volume, at the expense of a decrease in the percentage of mesopores in the total pore volume. As a result of these effects, the sorbent regenerated at a temperature of 800°C becomes more microporous, with an increased surface area and specific volume, which positively affects its functional properties, as adsorption in the micropores is very strong.
