content of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to retaining walls, and to a means for lessening the visual impact of
a retaining wall. In a particular form, the present disclosure relates to a planter, and a vertical garden
arrangement which can be formed using the planter.
BACKGROUND
A retaining wall is a structure designed to retain earth bound by two different elevations. In some
cases, the visible area of a retaining wall, as determined by the product of its height and its length, can be
considerable. While necessary in certain circumstances, some consider retaining walls to be unsightly.
It is against this background and the problems and difficulties associated therewith that the
present invention has been developed.
Certain objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following
description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein, by way of illustration and
example, an embodiment of the present invention is disclosed.

planter is fabricated from sheet metal.
In one form, the planter further comprises a pair of end walls extending between the lengthwise
extending (i.e. side) walls.
In one form, a top edge of each of the end walls subtends a reflex angle with the or each
attachment strip. In this way, in use, the upwardly opening channel is tilted down slightly.
In one form, the body comprises a pair of ends, each of which comprises a means for attaching
the planter to another planter. In one form, this means comprises male and female interlocking portions.

the or each planar attachment strip is sandwiched between a pair of sleepers.
According to a further aspect, there is provided a method of constructing a retaining wall
comprising a vertical garden using the above described planters, the method comprising the step of laying
a first sleeper, and then laying a planter by positioning its body alongside of the sleeper with the planar
attachment strip atop of the sleeper, and then positioning a further sleeper atop of the or each attachment
strip so as to sandwich the or each attachment strip between the sleepers.

Embodiments of the present invention will be discussed with reference to the accompanying
drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a planter according to a first embodiment;

Figure 3 is an isometric view of a retaining wall according to an embodiment, where the retaining
wall comprises a plurality of the planters of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a further isometric view of the planter of Figure 2;
Figure 5 illustrates the planter of Figures 2 and 4 in an optional mode of use; and
Figure 6 illustrates the planter of Figures 2 and 4 in a further optional mode of use.
In the following description, like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts
throughout the figures.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
Referring now to Figure 1, where there is illustrated a planter 1 according to a first embodiment,
where the planter 1 comprises an elongate body 2 comprising a pair of lengthwise extending walls 4a and
4b, an upwardly opening channel 6 extending lengthwise between the walls 4a and 4b, and a planar
attachment strip 8 extending from the body 2 in a direction substantially normal to an axis of elongation
of the body 2. The planter 1 further comprises a floor 10 extending between the lengthwise extending (i.e.
side) walls 4, and a pair of end walls 12.
In this embodiment, but not essentially, the attachment strip 8 extends from an upper edge of wall
4a, and lengthwise along the body 2 so as to be coextensive with the body 2 lengthwise.
The planter 1 is moulded from a plastic material such as, but not necessarily limited to,
polypropylene, and so the attachment strip 8 is integrally formed with the body 2 of the planter 1. The end
walls 12 may also be integrally formed with the body 2 during moulding, or they may be formed
separately, meaning the body 2 could be extruded.
The elongate body comprises a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, so that the channel 6 narrows as
it deepens, and the floor 10 of the planter 1 comprises a plurality of drain holes 14 spaced apart
therealong.
The attachment strip 8 subtends a right angle with the wall 4 from which it extends, and a top
edge of each of the end walls 12 subtends a reflex angle with the attachment strip 8. This geometry makes
the planter more functional when in use, as will be discussed further below.
The body 2 of the planter 1 has a depth which is only slightly less than a depth of a sleeper 210
with which the planter is intended to be used. In this way, the body 2 of the planter 1 will substantially
screen the sleeper 210 in use.
Referring now to Figure 3, where there is illustrated a retaining wall assembly 200 comprising a
plurality of sleepers 210, and a plurality of the above described planters 1 stacked in an alternating
arrangement.
The retaining wall assembly 200 would be constructed by laying a first sleeper 210, and then
laying a first planter 1 by positioning its body 2 alongside of the sleeper 210 (on its exposed side) with the
planar attachment strip atop 8 of the sleeper 210, and then positioning a further sleeper 210 atop of the or
each attachment strip 8 so as to sandwich the attachment strip 8 between the sleepers 210. In use then, the
wall 4 from which the attachment strip 8 extends rests against the sleeper 210 for support, and the
upwardly opening channel 6 is inclined downward for ease of access thereto.
While not illustrated, it will be understood that the retaining wall assembly 200 will further
comprise a plurality of posts, where these posts include steel C-channels and I-beams, each of which
define channels into which the ends of the sleepers 210 are slotted. In this way, the retaining wall
assembly 200 will comprise courses of sleepers 210 and planters 1 stacked in an alternating arrangement.
In use, the planters 1 substantially screen the sleepers 210, and, once they are filled with soil and
plants, the planters 1 will cooperatively form a vertical garden which substantially screens all of the
sleepers 210 of the retaining wall behind. In this way, a vertical garden has been constructed without need
for a dedicated supporting frame to be constructed in front of the retaining wall first, potentially saving
time and money.
Referring now to Figure 2, where there is illustrated a planter 100 according to a further
embodiment. Those parts of the planter 100 which are identical (or near- identical) to corresponding parts
shown in the planter 1 of Figures 1 and 3, will be denoted by the same reference numerals and will not be
described again in detail.
Planter 100 differs from planter 1 primarily inasmuch as it comprises two attachment strips 8
separated by a slot 102, and that a portion 104 of the wall 4a coinciding with the slot 102 is stepped into
the channel 6 so as to form a ridge 104 in the wall 4a. In this way, a provision is made for one of the posts
for the retaining wall to nest in slot 102, so that planter 100 can extend over and across the post to screen
In cases where the slot 102 is not required, a segment of the planter 100 coinciding with the ridge
104 could be cut out, and the end portions joined directly, or via a joining channel section sized and
shaped to nest with respect to the end portions.
Referring now to Figure 5, where, in a further possible mode of use, one or more planters 100 can
be secured to a post (or like vertical element) 300, by nesting the slot 102 over the post 300 so that the
post 300 is received in the slot 102 of the planter 100. Fasteners 302 can be driven through the ridge 104
into the post 300, and/or an adhesive applied between the ridge 104 and the post 300 to secure the or each
planter 100 in position. In this way, a plurality of planters 100 can be secured to the post 300 one above
the other to form a vertical garden against the post 300.
Referring now to Figure 6, where, in yet a further possible mode of use, one or more planters 1 or
100 can be secured to a rail (or like horizontal element) 400 via the or each attachment strip thereof.
Fasteners 302 can be driven through the or each attachment strip into the rail 400, and/or an adhesive
applied between the or each attachment strip and the rail 400 to secure the or each planter 100 in position.
