Abstract

In existing portion capsules liquid, in particular hot water, is induced into the portion capsule, which extracts, desorbs, and/or dissolves the beverage to be produced from the raw material. However, the yield which is achieved thereby is often unsatisfactory. To address this, the present invention relates to a portion capsule for producing a beverage or a foodstuff, having a side wall and a base which collectively define a volume in which a raw material is located, the raw material selected for producing the beverage or foodstuff upon extraction by a liquid, wherein a liquid distributor arranged to distribute the liquid perfusing into the portion capsule across the cross section thereof is provided in the volume so as to be upstream of the raw material, and wherein the liquid distributor is a coffee granulate material of a larger cross section than the mean particle diameter of the raw material.
