Abstract

Disclosed is an apparatus (100) for collecting solar radiation. The apparatus (100) comprises at least one solar collector (110). The at least one solar collector (110) comprises at least two photovoltaic solar panels adapted for converting incident solar energy to electrical energy. Each of the panel is freely pivotable within a pivot range about a pivot axis. The apparatus (100) further comprises a substantially upright support structure and a base. Each collector (110) comprises a respective active hinge located between the at least two panels. Each of the active hinges comprises an electric actuator and a control interface for receiving control signals for the electric actuator. Each active hinge is adapted for rotating the associated solar collector (110) about the support structure to substantially maximise the collection of solar radiation by the at least one solar collector (110), and independently positioning each the photovoltaic solar panel with the electric actuator in response to control signals derived from data received from a respective solar tracking device associated with each solar collector (110). In use, the apparatus (100) is configurable in (a) a deployed configuration for substantially maximising the collection of solar radiation by the at least one solar collector (110); and (b) a stowed configuration wherein each the active hinge is further adapted for configuring the angle between the at least two photovoltaic solar panels for either: optimising the incident solar radiation on the at least two photovoltaic solar panels; or configuring the apparatus (100) in the stowed configuration.
