Abstract

Provided is an isolated peptide reagent comprising a peptide or a peptoid or a multimer comprising a plurality of said peptide or peptoid, wherein said peptide reagent interacts preferentially with a pathogenic form of a conformational disease protein as compared to a non-pathogenic form of the conformational disease protein, and wherein said peptide or said peptoid consists of up to 100 amino acid residues in length comprising a sequence QWNKPSKPKTN or a variant of said sequence wherein one or two amino acids of said sequence selected from tryptophan, asparagine, lysine, proline, and threonine is/are substituted with another amino acid or N-substituted glycine residue. The peptide is useful in assays for binding specifically prion proteins.
